You will learn everything you need to know about stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) including paddling, stroke technique, tips to maintain balance, turning, and most importantly how to deal with the wind. Board and paddle will be provided. Swim trunks, sunblock, and a t-shirt are all you’ll need. When people think of San Pedro's waterfront, sometimes they think of cruise ships, oil tankers, and container ships. A lot of people don’t realize the most exclusive small boat marina in all of Los Angeles County is located right here in San Pedro. Located less than a mile from Cabrillo Beach and less than two miles from Ports of Call, this is the ideal location to get in some . ONE OF SAN PEDRO’S REAL of pride is the Los Angeles Maritime Institute (LAMI) and its TopSail Youth Program. LAMI uses hands-on experiences at sea to provide an array of social, education and leadership development opportunities to middle school and high school students in San Pedro and Wilmington, and throughout the greater Los Angeles area. The TopSail Youth Program is offered year-round aboard the Tall Ships Irving Johnson and Exy Johnson, 110-foot traditionally rigged wooden vessels named after Adventure Learning pioneers who sailed around the world seven times with young crews. Its purpose-built vessels and their crews were proclaimed the “Official Tall Ships and Maritime Ambassadors of the City of Los Angeles” at their launch in 2002. The ships were built right on the San Pedro Waterfront. And everyone has a chance to sail on them—and even pull a line. Both ships offer a variety of sailing opportunities throughout the year, including Family Fun Sails, Adventure Sails, and Sunset Potluck sails. There are also youth camps. If you love the sea, there is no better way to experience it than on a traditional vessel and here is your opportunity. Plus, the ships are available for corporate events like team-building, parties, and even weddings.

If You Like Beer … Really Like Beer, You’ll Love San Pedro BEER

DOESN’T JUST ARRIVE ON TRUCKS IN SAN PEDRO. We’ve got lots of it being brewed right here. So it first arrives as hops and barley and water and all kinds of other good things that master brewers use to create some very enticing beverages. But we’re also known for the places to get beer, too. A British pub, for example. Or legendary dark bars with neon signs behind the liquor. Family–friendly places, as well. You’ll find the first Boddington's tap ever installed in the U.S. at the Whale & Ale. It’s one of a dozen brewed choices on tap). The Whale & Ale is at 327 W. 7th Street, Downtown There's also the inimitable, awardwinning San Pedro Brewing Company where you'll find a large selection of beers and ales brewed right on the premises at 331 W. 6th Street, Downtown. You can take a tour of the brewing facilities on Fridays at 4—with free samples! Plus, San Pedro Brewing Company will be opening the Port Town Microbrewery in the historic Liberty Auditorium. And Jackson's Place is the spot for the best selection of local craft beers (and outstanding wines) of any specialty spot in San Pedro at 335 W. 7th Street, Downtown If you want an authentic San Pedro

views like no where on earth. Not far away, across from Ports O’ Call at Berth 74 near the fishing boats is Utro's at the Wharf Cafe. Have a PBR on tap with one of their legendary hamburgers. And enjoy lots of history on the walls of the café. A new addition to the San Pedro beer scene is Brouwerijwest in 73-year-old Warehouse 9 at the corner of 22nd Street and Harbor Blvd. The tasting room at Brouweriwest (just pronounce it “Brewery West”) offers samexperience, drop in at Godmother's Saloon. ples of some great up-and-coming beers. Great beers on tap and cutting edge enterWhether from the tap, can, bottle, or vat, tainment. Great people, too, at 301 W. 7th San Pedro has your brew. SPV Street, Downtown. Not all the beer action is Downtown, though. Down at the San Pedro Waterfront is the legendary Ports O’ Call Waterfront Dining in Ports O’ Call Village. Voted Best Happy Hour in the South Bay by Daily Breese readers. And for good reason. An outstanding choice of drinks, great views, wonderful food, and

Before & After Your Cruise from the Port of LA at San Pedro THE PORT OF LOS ANGELES in San Pedro is a great place to begin or end your cruise (and it’s a fun, interesting, and exciting port of call, too). There are plenty of activities ashore, so it’s a good idea to plan on a few extra days before or after. (And if you’re traveling to join a cruise, planning to arrive a day or more early just makes good sense—you don’t have to worry about travel delays and you can begin your voyage rested.) For those driving in, the local hotels offer economical park and cruise packages that allow you to park your car at the hotel for no additional cost for the duration of your cruise and stay a night or more before and/or after your cruise. Check with the hotels for their latest offers: DoubleTree by Hilton San Pedro-Port of Los Angeles Hotel, 2800 Via Cabrillo Marina, LA Waterfront. 310-514-3344 Crowne Plaza Los Angeles Harbor Hotel, 601 S. Welcome January Cruise Passengers

Restaurant Profile Jolly Burrito

It’s more than burritos. Be prepared to be surprised and pleased WITH

A NAME LIKE JOLLY BURRITO GRILL you can expect to find outstanding things wrapped inside a big tortilla and surrounded by rice and beans. But don’t confuse this restaurant with any other San Pedro business with “burrito” in its name. Actually, don’t confuse Jolly Burrito Grill with just about any other Mexican restaurant in the Downtown or Uptown Pacific Avenue neighborhoods. This is the real deal when it comes to Mexican food. Authentic, carefully crafted, and presented by people who care about providing excellent service and an enticing atmosphere.

either of which is prepared to perfection. If you want burritos, this is a great place for them. The basic comes with rice, beans, and sauce. Or get a macho burrito with asada, jalapenos, onions, and cilantro. You’ve got 11 choices of tacos that range from chicken and carnitas to marinanated park, ground beef, and even a vegetarian style. As with any real Mexican restaurant, Jolly Burrito shines in its seafood. Try the Scampi Al Mojo De Ajo, Camarones Al Diabla (yep, spicy shrimp), Fajitas De Camarones, or the seafood cocktails. Chile rellanos are usually a good way to judge the skill of the kitchen and these are luxurious while still holding to the simple, time-honored formula of a good and tasty batter, gooey cheese, and a fresh and solid chile. There’s also breakfast all day with burritos, pancakes, lots of egg dishes, and omelets, along with breakfast specials. You can also get menudo for the day after or just because you like it. Open every day from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. SPV

.

Some might recall the restaurant in a smaller location on 6th Street. Now it’s in a bigger spot and its décor is as genuine as you’ll find in any café in Mexico. And so is the food. Take the tamales. They’re made with the care that someone’s abuela. They’re big. And you just know that when they’re being filled, the husks are stuffed with the delicious masa. And that masa is more than a batter; it’s got wonderful spices that enhance the whole experience. Still, each has plenty of fillings, each spiced to a delectable perfection and covered with a sauce that makes your mouth water even as it’s presented. And the tacos. sumptuous spiced meat in a crisp or soft tortilla, 12
