Financial Aid, Scholarships & Veterans Services 5151 Pacific Avenue Stockton, California 95207

Dear San Joaquin Delta College Scholarship Applicant: Last year, San Joaquin Delta College was able to award almost 300 scholarships to students enrolling here or transferring from Delta College to a four-year institution. The many scholarship opportunities at San Joaquin Delta College are a testament to the support of the alumni, family, and friends of the college. The support makes higher education possible for so many students, and with that comes the key to all other successes. We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to all of our donors as if it weren’t for their continued support our students would be disadvantaged without this financial assistance. Scholarships are the culmination of academic merit and financial need made possible due to the extraordinary generosity of donors. We look forward to continuing to work with students, donors, and community members to transform access to higher education for our students.

Sincerely,

Tina Lent Acting Director Financial Aid, Scholarships & Veterans Services

HOW TO APPLY… Electronic applications will be available in January 2015.

ALL applications must be filed online. If this is not possible, please contact the Office of Financial Aid, Scholarships and Veterans Services for an appointment.

Electronic scholarship applications (including all supporting documents-including transcripts) must be submitted no later than March 2, 2015 – 5:00 pm, to the Financial Aid, Scholarships & Veterans Services service window (not postmarked) in the DeRicco Building. Students must complete the SJDC scholarship application electronically at http://finaid.deltacollege.edu to be considered for scholarships awarded through this office. However, some donors may require additional documents and/or interviews from their applicants. Please refer to each scholarship criteria for more information. Most scholarships require enrollment of 12 units so please read each scholarship’s description before applying. Delta College Enrollment for Spring 2015 – Students who have one (1) or more college units completed at Delta, must be enrolled at Delta College for the Spring 2015 semester to be considered for a Delta College scholarship. Current high school students or students with no college units/credits are exempt from this criterion. The following documents are required: •

Electronic Scholarship Application. Go to http://finaid.deltacollege.edu and fill out the application form as accurately as possible. Your responses are one of the main sources of information that determines your eligibility.

Recommendations. Please have the two enclosed recommendation forms completed by faculty members such as instructors in your major, counselors or other instructors who know your academic work.

Autobiographical Essay. Using the Autobiographical Essay Form, please type a detailed statement listing your abilities, achievements and activities that best qualifies you for scholarships; and explain your goals for your education and occupation. What are your future plans?

Scholarship Selection Process All scholarship applications are reviewed and evaluated by up to three entities depending on which scholarships you have applied for. Those entities include: •

The San Joaquin Delta College Scholarship Advisory Committee – Composed of two faculty members, two managers, two classified staff members, and two students. Executive Secretary: Director of Financial Aid, Scholarships and Veterans Services.

Scholarship Donors or Representative – Composed of the donors or organizational representative.

SJDC Faculty/Division – Composed of an SJDC representative.

Although applying for scholarships does not guarantee selection, all applications will be reviewed based on the required criteria. In addition, the application, recommendations, biography essay and academic history are evaluated for completeness and eligibility. Some information is also extracted from the information you submitted on your Admissions Application so it is important that you keep your address and personal records updated at the Admissions Office in the DeRicco Building.

Scholarship Awards In addition, to reviewing your application, the goal of the SJDC Scholarship Committee is to award as many students as possible with a scholarship. As a result, those who may be selected for a scholarship will be given a $3,000 award cap on scholarships selected by the SJDC SCHOLARSHIP ADVISORY COMMITTEE. Students are allowed to apply up to ten scholarships. Students are not to contact donors or selectors regarding their scholarship application or the award process. Only one scholarship application will be accepted, the most current application. Scholarships are generally awarded to recipients near the end of the summer semester and the funds are held until proof of enrollment is verified at the beginning of the fall semester. In most cases, scholarship funds for awards made by San Joaquin Delta College are deposited in trust funds, which show the name of the donor as well as the recipient. San Joaquin Delta College also receives funds awarded by other institutions and these are placed in a similar fund. Award eligibility will be determined upon verification of funds. San Joaquin Delta College has two obligations: 1) To the donor, to be sure that the money is used according to the wishes of the individual or organization providing the money; and 2) To the recipient, to provide the money when proper documentation shows that the student is entitled to these funds. Donors expect that scholarship funds will be used for registration fees or tuition, books, housing, or other costs related to education. Some donors require that you be enrolled full-time (12 units unless otherwise noted) in order to use the funds, either at this or any other institution. Unless the donor specifies or the criteria of the scholarship indicates otherwise, all students must be enrolled in at least 6 or more units to receive his or her scholarship. It is San Joaquin Delta College’s policy to disburse one half of the total scholarship award each semester, unless the donor notifies us otherwise. If you are unable to utilize your scholarship award during the fall semester, we may be able to grant you a leave of absence for one semester from your award. However, failure to utilize your scholarship award without an approved leave of absence for the fall semester will cause cancellation of your award(s). All scholarship awards must be used for the school year for which the student applied and cannot be extended or transferred to future school years. If you are awarded a San Joaquin Delta College scholarship and you are transferring to another institution, please submit to our office, a copy of your acceptance letter (on institutional letterhead with your name, I.D. number and Delta I.D. number) indicating that you are admitted/registered at that institution. The funds will be transferred to their Financial Aid Office and can be used in a manner similar to our policy. If you have any questions, please contact our Financial Aid, Scholarships & Veterans Services Office or call (209) 954-5115.
