Brandeis Bulletin - San Fernando Valley Chapter

Message from your President Dear Members, As I write this, my first letter as President, I can’t help but think back a few years to the coffee I attended as a new member of BNC. I joined Brandeis looking for new experiences and like so many of you I chose to join a Study Group. To be honest, becoming President of the Chapter was not on my mind but by becoming active in the BNC I have enriched my life with new friends and the good feelings that one gets when you are part of a worthwhile and respected organization. Because one of our main focuses is Fund Raising, we are continually involved in offering new programs to enhance the overall experience of our members and friends. Marilyn Leaf, our Fund Raising/Program VP and her committee are already hard at work planning for the coming year. Please contact her if you would like to help or have ideas for new programs and events. The Neuroscience research program at Brandeis is ranked sixth in the country allowing the students to work side by side with Brandeis scientists in any of the 56 state of the art laboratories located at Brandeis. All of us either has a family member who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and related diseases or knows someone who is suffering from one of these catastrophic illnesses. Every 68 seconds someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. One in 3 seniors will die from Alzheimer’s or dementia. These are difficult facts to read but you, EACH OF YOU, can lower these statistics by becoming active in our Chapter. How can you help? Encourage your friends and neighbors to join us by telling them about our Chapter events and programs. Our Membership VP’s Diana Dicker and Marsha Asher will be holding periodic coffees for New and Perspective members to acquaint them with Brandeis and the programs our Chapter offers. Take the time to read the bulletin, ably edited by Phyllis Davidson and Beverly Fleischer. This is a very easy and enjoyable way to keep up with the happenings of our Chapter. If you ever have a question or concern, please feel free to contact me at 818 578-5275 or by email at [email protected]. Finally, thank you for allowing me the privilege of serving as President of Brandeis National Committee, San Fernando Valley. Ours is a large and well respected chapter and my goal is to make it even stronger in the coming year. I cannot do this alone. While I am confident that our new and capable Board of Directors will continue the journey started by our past leaders, I am asking each of you, our members to do what you can to help make our Chapter the BEST it can be. As they say, “It takes a Village.” Each of you is important to Brandeis. Together we can make a difference. Warm regards,

Claire Rabishaw 2

July, 2015

I would like to present you with an opportunity for you to promote your business while at the same time, supporting neurodegenerative research at Brandeis University. The members of the San Fernando Valley Chapter of The BRANDEIS NATIONAL COMMITTEE are holding their Annual Luncheon and Designer Fashion Show on October 12, 2015 at the Warner Center Marriott Hotel in Woodland Hills. This is our major fundraiser for the year and we anticipate an attendance of approximately 350 members and guests. Your placement of an ad in our Program/Ad Book will be greatly appreciated and will play a significant part in helping us reach our fundraising goals this year. The event Program/Ad Book is placed at every attendee’s seat, which means that your ad will reach a minimum of 300 women, all residing in the San Fernando Valley and as far west as Westlake Village. A form for Ad Book placement and pricing is attached. This event enables our Chapter to raise funds for Brandeis University’s “Sustaining the Mind Campaign” in support of Brandeis scientists and their research towards curing neurodegenerative diseases, e.g., Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS) and Autism. Brandeis University is ranked one of the top six research universities in the United States and their ongoing research in these fields is ground-breaking. As an alternative to purchasing ad space, you may wish to become a sponsor of this event, for which you receive a full page ad ($200 value) as well as recognition from the podium and on a table tent at each table. The minimum sponsor donation is $500. My address and phone number are shown on the bottom of this letter, should you wish to contact me or forward your donation in the mail. Checks should be written to BNC. Thank you for your consideration. For your information our Tax ID# is 04-210-3552. WESTERN REGION MINI RETREAT The second Western Region Mini-Retreat was held on June 4, 2015 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Calabasas. In attendance were 35 members from the San Fernando Valley, Conejo Valley and Los Angeles Chapters. 16 members from the San Fernando Valley Chapter were in attendance. The Retreat was led by Pauline Green, Western Region President The purpose of the Retreat was to engage members from different Chapters in an open exchange, encouraging a sharing of ideas and discussion about the challenges that each Chapter faces. This open dialogue led to the understanding that we can learn a great deal from each other to strengthen each individual Chapter, and our Region as a whole. The primary topics of discussion were Study Groups, Membership/ Marketing and Fundraising/Programming/Publicity. One member from each Chapter served as the facilitator for a particular topic. At the core of our discussions was the understanding that in addition to providing our members with learning and community service opportunities, BNC is a fundraising organization, dedicated to providing philanthropic support to Brandeis University. Following the table topic discussions, Shirley Pollack, President of the Los Angeles Chapter, delivered a presentation on Philanthropy which was very well received. All attendees agreed that the Retreat provided an excellent opportunity for several Chapters to communicate directly with one another, to discover commonalities among Chapters, and to offer one another suggestions for solutions and action. Selda still volunteering at 95! She deserves a medal At our latest volunteer outing to Braille Institute, Selda Massion – 95 years of age! – amazed us all by placing braille labels on the spine of more than 400 children's books, an awesome achievement. Selda, of Encino, was one of 12 Brandeis volunteers participating with Braille's “Dots for Tots” program, which involves turning children's books into braille books by pasting braille cards on each page. The staff at Braille Institute was pleased with our performance and wants us back soon. Coming up: two volunteer dates this fall. Thursday, Oct. 29, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., again at Braille Institute. Tuesday, Nov. 10, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at MEND, a wonderful Pacoima charity that serves the needy in many ways. We'll be sorting donated cans of food and stocking racks in their clothing store. Please register in advance with Natalie Hall, community service chair, (818) 9063574 or [email protected].

When Jeff Wang was applying to U.S. colleges more than two years ago from his home near Shanghai, Brandeis University was a top choice. Like many Chinese students now at Brandeis, he had discovered the university on Chinese Internet forums that touted the school's academic rankings and its high facultyto-student ratio. Wang noted one other element that appealed to him: the Jewish character of Brandeis. “It's run by Jewish, and Jews are smarter—there were lots of people talking about that in the forums,” said Wang, now a Brandeis sophomore and a double major in economics and fine arts. “A lot of Jews are in very high positions in corporations, so once we get to Brandeis we can have connections to those corporations through alumni relationships.” With 10 percent of Brandeis' freshman class Chinese, the university bookstore is now stocking Chinese-language college swag. University officials do not have precise numbers of how many Brandeis students are Jews, because Brandeis does not ask students about religious background. There are estimates ranging between 40 to well over 50 percent. Yet, a generation ago, the school was about 75 percent Jewish but had no daily minyan, or Jewish prayer service. Now there are three daily services, a range of denominational choices on Shabbat, and Jewish cultural offerings from theater troupes and a cappella groups to a Yiddish club. Vikki Helperin

Dear fellow Brandeis National Committee member, In our enthusiasm to announce our new scholarship campaign, we sent out an email informing you that BNC would be championing one of the highest priorities for Brandeis University. We had called it the Catalyst Fund: In Support of Student Scholarships to go along with the University's campaign, but the more we thought about this name for our new campaign, we realized that we wanted to keep better track of our BNC scholarship gifts and make it clear that this was the BNC scholarship campaign. So simply put, our new initiative is called the BNC Scholarship Campaign. Our goal over the next two years is to raise $1 million dollars for the campaign to provide scholarships to ensure that the best and brightest students are able to enroll at Brandeis. We appreciate your support. Madalyn Friedberg

HELP WANTED Are you proficient in EXCEL? If so, and you have a few hours a month to work on your own computer, the Registrar’s Committee can use your help. For more information, please email Sally Hanes at [email protected].

AN IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL MEMBERS Brandeis National Committee has recently changed their banking institution. Due to this change, all checks now issued for events, study groups, tributes and donations must be made out to: BRANDEIS UNIVERSITY/BNC. We are no longer able to accept checks issued to BNC only.

Your San Fernando Valley Chapter is now an Amazon Associate! From now on, the SFV Chapter and Brandeis benefit whenever you make purchases from Amazon through our website. Our chapter will get 10% back on e-books, 5% on paper books, and 5% of anything else that Amazon sells. To use this amazing new connection, go to www.brandeissfv.org and click the Amazon button on the left side of the Home page. No Keyword is necessary. Then proceed as usual. When you place your order, you will be asked where to bill and ship. Enter your information as you have in the past. Amazon will credit our chapter account automatically as long as your purchase is made and completed through our website. ONLY by using this port are you (and your family and friends) able to shop as always on Amazon and benefit our chapter at the same time. It costs you nothing — the price for your Amazon goods is the same as if you went directly to Amazon. So please help us in this innovative new way to enhance our contributions to Brandeis neuroscience research and student scholarships.

BRANDEIS INFORMATION Most adults agree an active and engaged lifestyle is essential for good health. They've heard about the many benefits of physical activity including better heart and respiratory health, greater bone and muscle strength, and improved cognitive function. Many know that exercise can also lower the risk of type 2 diabetes, cancer and depression. Yet only a small percentage of middle-aged and older adults in the United States engage in regular physical exercise. With $1.5 million from the National Institute on Aging, the just-opened Boston Roybal Center for Active Lifestyle Interventions (BRC) aims to change this sobering statistic. A research consortium of five universities, the Brandeis-based BRC will be led by Professor of Psychology Margie Lachman over the next five years. The center will develop, test and promote healthy aging strategies, especially among sedentary adults at high risk for poor health outcomes. The goal is to encourage adults to incorporate more activity into their everyday lives in the context of their work, family and leisure time. “Physical activity is a promising non-pharmacological, non-invasive and cost-effective way to promote health,” says Lachman. “Even a modest increase in physical activity, along with a reduction in sedentary behavior can have far-reaching health benefits.” Vikki Helperin Chapter Information Officer
