PAIN FORMULATIONS Pain is an unpleasant feeling that results from harmful stimuli such as blunt force, extreme temperatures, or dangerous chemicals. It can result from a variety of sources including nerve damage or trauma. Whatever the cause, the complexities of pain make treating it a challenge. Compounded pain creams allow physicians to choose from medications with different mechanisms of action to target the patient’s specific type of pain. In addition, using pain medications topically does not result in the adverse effects from systemic narcotic drugs. Using compounded pain creams also provides an alternative for patients who suffer from chronic pain and allows them to escape some of the stigmatization associated with the condition.

PAIN PILLS V.S. PAIN CREAMS Topical pain and anti-inflammatory creams reduce inflammation, pain, swelling and discomfort in localized areas without the typical side effects often associated with oral treatments such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory or narcotic therapy. Research shows topical medications may also be preferred to minimize side effects or issues such as stomach upset, constipation, and drug interactions often associated with oral medications.

NASAL IRRIGATION & NASAL NEBULIZATION Nasal drug delivery via nasal irrigation or nasal nebulization can achieve local or systemic effects within the body. The nasal region has an abundant supply of blood vessels and is highly permeable to sufficiently small and lipophilic substances. When aiming to treat resistant sinus infections however, achieving a local effect in the sinus cavity may be more beneficial. According to the FDA guidance document on nasal drug delivery, the optimal particle size for nasal deposition should be substantially larger than five microns. Nasal nebulizer treatments (with larger particle sizes of approximately 10 – 30 microns) have good compliance rates because they deliver therapy in under two minutes, do not require refrigeration, and are very easy for patients to use. Nebulizer treatments are also beneficial because they offer an additional strategy for treating stubborn sinus infections by simultaneously delivering multiple medications at high concentrations and minimal medication waste.

BENEFITS OF NEBULIZER TREATMENTS • Increases the solubility and dispensability of active ingredients, potentially improving absorption performance • Allows for multi-drug therapy combinations, giving you more power to customize medication, simplify therapy regimens and potentially improve patient compliance • Enables an extended beyond-use date consistent with USP guidelines for anhydrous dosage forms, since the powder contents (from a capsule or sachet) are mixed with Sodium Chloride only at the time of use • Testing has concluded that it improves the antimicrobial activity of the active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs)

TYPES OF PATIENTS WHO MAY BENEFIT FROM PHARMACEUTICAL NASAL THERAPY • Patients with recurrent nasal polyps • Patients suffering from recalcitrant allergic rhinitis • Patients with smell disorders • Post-sinus surgery patients with chronic nasal crusting and infection • Patients with infections who have had or are candidates for sinus surgery • Patients suffering from other rhinologic conditions no insurance) for $41.99 (per machine. Adult & Child masks are available to purchase (cash only, no insurance) for $4.22 (per mask)

TYPES OF ACTIVES • Antihistamines • Antifungals • Anesthetics • Antibacterials • Steroids NOTES According to Chapter 797 of the U.S. Pharmacopoeia, compounded aqueous solutions for irrigation or nebulization are required to be sterile. But commercially available dry powders for inhalation are manufactured as non-sterile products, since there is no water present in the products to promote the growth of microbes. And while compounded or manufactured aqueous solutions are sterile prior to administration, once the solution is opened and placed into a nebulizer cup or irrigation device it is no longer sterile, which means it’s not actually administered sterile. For Nebulizer treatments, a nebulizer machine & mask are required. San Dimas Pharmacy offers one complimentary nebulizer machine & one mask (adult or child) for NEW sinus therapy prescriptions (one per patient). Nebulizer machines are available to purchase (cash only,

METABOLIC SUPPLEMENTS The optimal intake of vitamins and minerals (micronutrients) is essential to your health. Without this we run the risk of increased sickness, stress on the internal mechanisms of the body and possible accelerated disease. Micronutrients which are greatly lacking in most people’s diet for many reasons, assist in a variety of cellular functions including DNA repair, detoxification of foreign substances within the body, hormone production, along with general maintenance of growth, reproduction, and energy. A network of homeostatic control mechanisms work to maintain the cellular environment within limits. When the homeostatic balance becomes disrupted due to poor nutrition, stressful lifestyle or general neglect, cells within your body begin to malfunction which can lead to disease. Disease and cellular malfunction arise in two basic ways: deficiency (cells not getting what they need) or toxicity (cells poisoned by what they do not need). The link between diet and health is clear: external influences based on lifestyle choices, such as diet, and environmental exposure can affect your body’s ability to maintain cellular health. A potent, targeted micronutrient supplement can help support energy production and optimal metabolism promoting a more balanced cellular homeostasis. San Dimas Pharmacy is on the cutting edge of enhanced metabolic nutrition and has assembled highly effective, ultra-potent and micronutrient dense formulas for doctors to help their patients stay healthy and achieve optimum health. Ask your doctor how you can use these pharmaceutical grade, cutting edge and highly effective vitamins to put yourself in the driver’s seat towards increased health, better energy levels, and maximum vitality.
