Thanksgiving Planning

Worship Schedule Change All Saints moves in September to its "Program Year" schedule. Say goodbye to Saturday evening worship and say hello to Learning. Beginning with Sunday, September 9, we will worship at 8:30 and 11 each Sunday morning, celebrating Holy Communion each time. Between those services at 9:45, we will have Education Hour for everyone from age 3 through adults. If you are interested in getting your child registered for Sunday School (age 3 through grade 5), Confirmation (grades 68), or High School Youth Group (grades 9-12), contact the church office. Adult Forum will begin that morning as well in the church library.

On Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2012 All Saints will once again open our doors to serve anyone who needs a place to be for a traditional Thanksgiving meal. For each of the past two years, we have fed around 200 folks. Whether homeless or alone for the holiday, we want everyone to feel welcome at All Saints. Plans again include serving turkey and all the sides from 11-2 in the Gathering Space. We'll need all hands on deck, so make plans for your family's Thanksgiving tradition to include helping to serve others. We'll need folks to invite the community, set up and decorate the space, clean up the space, cook the food, serve the food, procure donations from area businesses, and provide entertainment and hospitality. If you are interested in helping (especially to coordinate) any of these areas or have other great ideas, please contact Pastor Seth. Everyone, please watch for sign-up opportunities as we get closer for your donations and your volunteer time. An organizational meeting will happen on Wednesday, September 19 for anyone interested at 7 pm.

Light From The Pastor Why do we go to church?

If you haven't asked the question, surely you've heard it. From your kids, from confused friends; “Why do you go to church all the time?” In conversation language, we usually put it in those terms "go to church," when what we really mean is "Why do we worship?" So how do you answer the question: "Why do you worship?" The first, almost unthinking answer that many of us give is something along the lines of "because it's what we do." We may not really be able to put into words the reasons for what we do. We may worship because it's habit, because it's what our parents and grandparents did. We may worship just because it's what we've always done; because it's what we do. And I think that's a pretty good answer. We worship because it's what we do. As human beings created in the image of God, we worship God. It's what we were made to do and it's what we do. We hope and pray that, in worship, you connect with community (see friends and acquaintances), you hear and know that God loves you unconditionally, you learn something, you think about God and yourself and the world

in a different way. But first and foremost, we worship because it's what we do. Try this: gather with your Christian community here at All Saints for worship each week for at least a month. Then see how you feel about it. I can almost guarantee you won't want to be away. Because it's what you were made to do. You were made to worship God together with other Christians. We go to church… we worship because we worship. It's as simple (and as life-changing) as that. Pastor Seth

Daily Email Devotions & Conversation Each day (Monday through Friday), Pastor Jenn and Seth write a brief daily email devotional that is sent out via email. The scripture texts for these reflections are based on the daily lectionary, designed to tie in to and build upon the readings from the Sundays. If you'd like to receive these and are not currently, please send an email to [email protected]. We also have a conversational component for those who wish. You can also read the devotionals at http://aslcdevotions.blogspot.com. Here, you can also leave comments either for the pastors or for other members and reflect back on what we've written. Join in the conversation and make the Bible a part of your daily life.

PADS Shelter opens again Oct. 6 Will you help care for the homeless? All Saints will open its doors again as an emergency shelter for homeless persons in our community Saturday, Oct. 6. As we have done during the cold weather months for more than two decades we will offer warm, dry, secure shelter and nutritious food to the men, women and children who come to us in need. Fulfilling this ministry requires nearly two dozen volunteers each week who help in a variety of ways. Some work directly with our guests as hosts in the shelter; others prepare or purchase food; and every Sunday morning more volunteers clean up so Heedum Hall can be ready for Sunday School. Will you help? The shelter’s Co-Site Directors, Monika Fiedler and Tom Germuska, can provide detailed information about the ways members can be part of the ministry. In addition to the volunteers who care for guests each week a others assure that the shelter operates smoothly throughout the season. Last month four members stepped up to fill vacancies on the Leadership Team: Janine Byrne will manage laundry and non-food supplies; Dennis and Mary Kosko are our new clean-up coordinators; and Sandy Malouf will be a kitchen manager. Two critical leadership positions must be filled to open the shelter. A Director of Food Services is needed to oversee the feeding of our guests and coordinate with the other faith communities that provide food for the shelter. We also need a Volunteer Coordinator for the Early and First Shifts. Members who would like more information about these positions should contact Monika or Tom. In response to concerns about the stewardship of volunteer resources, this season our “First shift” has been split; we’re also taking steps to become Journeys’ first choice to accommodate families. A new “Early Shift,” 6 p.m.-8:30 p.m., will be responsible for set up, welcoming and registering guests and serving dinner; and a “First Shift,” 8:15 p.m.–11 p.m., will handle guest relations and late registrations as has been done previously at that time of night. The second and third shifts were not changed. Adults and high school juniors and seniors who would like to participate in this ministry should plan to attend new-volunteer training conducted by Journeys: the Road Home (formerly Journeys from PADS to Hope). All training is conducted at the Hope Center, 1140 E. Northwest Highway, Palatine (between Route 53 and the U.S.P.S. sorting center). Music Notes CHOIR REHEARSALS RESUME

CANTATA CHOIR

SEPTEMBER 5th and 6th Come sing and ring your praise to the Lord! All of the choirs begin rehearsing again the first week of September, preparing beautiful music for our worship services here at All Saints. Please come and join us in making a joyful noise together with others who love to sing, ring, and play instruments. If you are not able to participate, please encourage someone else to do so. At the very least, please offer a prayer of thanks for all who offer their gifts of music to our congregation. Rehearsals are as follows: Alleluia Choir Age 4 (Preschool) to 4th Grade Wednesdays 4:15 – 5:00 Adult Bells High school youth and adults Thursdays 6:15 – 7:30 Adult Choir High school youth and adults Thursdays 7:30 – 9:00 Children of the congregation, age four to fourth grade, are especially invited and encouraged to sing in the Alleluia Choir. At each rehearsal we do a variety of musical activities: learning songs, hymns, and anthems to sing in worship, playing Orff instruments and handchimes, and having a great time making our own joyful noise. Let Doug Williams, Director of Music, know of your interest in participating so that music can be prepared and a seat reserved for you!

Cantata Sunday is December 9th. This year we will present Let the Whole World Sing, by Joel Raney. Christmas is celebrated across the globe by people as diverse as the cultures in which they live. The hope for peace on earth is shared by millions of people in every corner of the globe. This is the inspiration behind Let the Whole World Sing. Including Celtic, Caribbean, African and Middle Eastern motives, new music is blended with familiar carols in a wide variety of styles to create an interesting and fresh re-telling of the Christmas Story. Youth and adult singers are invited to join the choir. Cantata Choir rehearsals begin on Thursday, October 4, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, October 7, at 9:45 a.m. Come to either rehearsal or both each week to prepare to sing this year’s cantata. To the holy child, to the newborn King, let the whole world sing! All Saints Golf Outing 2012 Despite a late start in planning, calendar conflicts and last minute arrangements the 19th Annual All Saints Golf Outing was a great experience for all who attended. After experiencing the drought of 2012, August 16 started with rain. By 10:00AM the rains started to clear and by 1:00 PM when 20 intrepid golfers took to the links of the Lake Zurich Golf Club for a shotgun start, the sun was shining! The thanksgiving for clear weather lasted until about the 5th hole when the skies darkened and a heavy mist began to fall. None of the golfer retreated to the clubhouse and play continued with all competitors finishing their round by 5:30 PM. In an effort to keep the costs low it was announced that motorized carts would not be available, however the hosts were able to supply one motorized cart for each foursome. This amenity not only provided relief for competitors who may have been challenged by the length of the walk, but also facilitated timely completion of the 18 holes. Since the outing utilized a “scramble format” (where each player hits his (her) own shot and the team decides on the best ball location from which to play the next shot) the use of the carts enabled each team to quickly determine the location of its best shot. Libations and snacks were provided on course by Joan Fedota and Kathy Tooredman. Although some of the golfers had pressing commitments (anniversary and birthday dinners and work responsibilities) most of the golfers headed to Steve & Joan Fedota’s home where they were joined by some spouses and other members of the congregation for a scrumptious dinner of salads and Chicken Parmesan. Prizes followed desert and the low gross team of Tassi & Goldene (and their two “ringer” guests were not present to receive their “big shot cigar” prizes. On the other end of the spectrum was the high gross team who received special pink flamingo prizes that are to be proudly displayed on each competitor’s desk or such other prominent place (you may see one in a church office). Competitors had to be present to win the so called skill prizes – including closest to the pin, longest putt and straightest drive. Ask Pastor Seth about the television he won! For the first time this year the golf outing was held on a Thursday. While a Saturday is a preferable outing day, the planners decided to try a mid-week date based on the opportunity to have the exclusive use of the facility. What about next year? Mike Nedzel and Dennis Kosko have graciously volunteered to plan next year’s outing – talk to them!

Youth Group meetings resume Sept. 9 - New members invited Sunday morning Youth Group meetings, between worship services at 9:45 am, resume Sept. 9, and Youth Minister Kevin Kinsella urged members to invite their friends to join the group. Youth Group is open to anyone in high school who wants to build their faith in a fun and friendly environment. All adult members -- even those without high school youth -- should invite their neighbors and friends with high school youth to come and give it a try. The best time to sample Youth Group is right away in the Fall.... we're hoping many new people will be invited by congregational members. Knowing God will change someone's life forever. Do you know a high school student that needs a church home? Have them come and check out All Saints Youth Group! Students who have grown up in the congregation are “automatically” included in the group. If you have any questions, call the Youth Ministers, Kevin or Linda Kinsella, 847-359-8380. The three most important dates on the Youth Group calendar are Sept. 9, 16 and 23. Getting back in the habit of meeting together on Sunday morning is important, but it’s also when we’ll make plans for our weekend retreat, Oct. 7, at Lutherdale Bible Camp in Elkhorn, Wis.
