Dear Parishioners and Friends, This weekend at Historic St. Joseph Church we celebrate First Holy Communion, a day of grace for our first communicants, who a er two years of study and prepara on, are welcomed to share fully at the Table of the Lord, to receive the Body and Blood of Christ with all of us. It is also a day of grace for our parish family; who among us does not remember their own first Holy Communion? We rejoice in receiving new ini ates into full par cipa on in the Sacrifice of the Mass. Their devo on and excitement are an inspiraon to all of us, a sign of hope that there are Catholic believers to come a er us. Celebra ng First Holy Communion at a parish Mass is a reminder to the children and their families that there should be many Holy Communions a er the first one. Catholics are expected to fully par cipate in the Mass every Sunday and Holy Day of Obliga on. The Holy Eucharist is food for the journey. We need it to keep us alive in Christ. St. John teaches us in his Gospel the power of the Eucharist, “Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood you have no life in you” (Jn 6:53). Just as our body needs regular nourishment, our soul needs regular nourishment as well. Parents have the responsibility of seeing that their children a end Mass regularly and receive con nuing faith forma on in the years a er First Holy Communion. Faith is fragile and can be easily lost due to ina en on or laziness. It would be sad to see the vibrant faith of our young children fade because their First Holy Communion was their last. Congratula ons to our children who have worked hard preparing for this special day. We are thankful for your witness and willingness to love Jesus above all else. Congratula ons to our parents who have walked this journey with their children. Congratula ons and thanks to our catechists who have taught the faith to our children and cared for their souls, especially Mrs. Mary Lynn Panek and Mrs. Rita Skole, our second grade catechists, and to Mrs. Charlene Bravo, our first grade catechist. Finally, congratula ons and thanks to Mrs. Cherie Gimbel, Director of Religious Educaon and to Mrs. Judy Halsne for her assistance. Thanks be to God for giving us another group of young believers. May the joy of this day remain with them always and may their life in Christ con nue to grow, as Jesus did, in wisdom, age and grace. Wishing you a wonderful week of work and prayer. May God bless you and all those you love, Fr. Timothy P. Andres, O.Carm. The final total for our Easter collec on this year is $28,250.25. I con nue to be humbled and grateful for your devoon to St. Joe’s. Thank you so very much.

Father Timothy P. Andres, O. Carm. Twel h Pastor, 2012 – present Father Andres, with his proud Irish heritage, nonetheless found a good fit at St. Joseph Parish, first as a teacher in the school for nine years un l its closing in 2010, then as pastoral associate during Father Kutzner’s pastorate and finally as pastor since 2012. Prior to his arrival at St. Joseph Parish, Father Tim taught for more than twenty years at Joliet Catholic High School, Mt. Carmel High School and Joliet Catholic Academy. During this me he also served as principal at both Mt. Carmel High School and Joliet Catholic Academy. Besides designing the prayer garden, ini a ng the St. Thomas More Lecture Series and providing for an Adora on Chapel for daily prayer even before he was pastor, since becoming pastor, he has started a gi shop in the north tower of the church, he conducts Bible Study class for adults and organizes pilgrimages to religious des na ons in the area, while faithfully tending to pastoral du es. Under his leadership, a new HVAC system was paid for and installed by the end of 2013. The sizeable debt to the Diocese that he inherited has been drama cally reduced and the parish is in good financial condi on. For the past year, along with his responsibili es as canonical pastor of St. Anthony Parish, he has coordinated Bishop Conlon’s Pastoral Visita on for both St. Joseph and St. Anthony parishes in January of 2016, and he has led St. Joseph Parish in planning ac vi es for a year-long celebra on of its 125th anniversary, which will conclude on May 15, 2016. Sacrament of Bap sm Guidelines: ♦

The Blessed Virgin Mary is the Mother of the Church and therefore the example, as well as the guide and inspira on, of everyone who, in and through the Church, seeks to be the servant of God and man and the obedient agent of the promp ngs of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit, as Pope Leo XIII reminded us, is the soul of the Church: All the ac vity and service of the members of the Church, beginning with the supreme par cipa on of the Blessed Mother in the work of the Church, is vivified by the Holy Spirit as the body, in all its ac vi es, is vivified by its soul. The Holy Spirit is the Paraclete, Advocate, and Comforter which Christ Himself sent to be our consola on in the sorrowful mysteries of life, our source of modera on in the joyful mysteries of life, our added principle of exalta on in the glorious mysteries of life. So He was for the Blessed Mother; so also He is for the least of us; so also He is for the rest of the Church, even for those who are its unconscious but conscien ous members. Wherever there is faith there is the example of Mary, because she lived by faith as the Scriptures remind us.... If, then, piety is the virtue which binds us to the sources of all life, to God, to our parents, to the Church, to Christ, certainly Chris an piety binds us, in grateful love, to Mary — or our acceptance of Christ and of the mystery of our kinship with Him is imperfect, par al, and unfulfilled. — Cardinal John Wright
