A Note from Our Pastor I went into my office this morning with a cup of tea, and did a search on Google. I almost dreaded seeing the results of that search as I knew that the numbers would be astounding. I knew that I would see the numbers ticking higher and higher as the seconds passed, and that each uptick represented the death of another child. I had Googled, “How many abortions since Roe v. Wade?” I sat at my desk and watched the numbers climb, each one another life taken, another life lost. I wondered what had brought the individuals to that place where they felt that there were no other options. I wondered about the ramifications, both physical and emotional, I wondered how we, as a country, who fights so hard for the rights of so many, could, in so many ways and so many times, fail to fight for the rights of the most vulnerable ... the unborn. Sunday, January 22 marks the 45th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize abortion in our country. At the time of the writing of this reflection, 60,081,345 abortions had taken place in the US since that day. It was John Paul II who challenged our culture to live not in a culture of death, but in a culture of life, and he challenged the people of the U.S. with these words, “America you are beautiful … and blessed … The ultimate test of your greatness is the way you treat every human being, but especially the weakest and most defenseless. If you want equal justice for all and true freedom and lasting peace, then America, defend life.” He called us all to defend ALL life, the lives of the unborn, the young, the old, the healthy, the sick … ALL life. So, let us pray for an end to abortion. Let us become involved in the prolife movement. Go to http://www.usccb.org/about/pro-life-activities for more information. Let us not be selective in the lives that we value, the groups whose rights we are willing to fight for. Instead, let us, as Jesus did, put value on the lives of every human being, every child of God, from conception to natural death. Let us do all that we can to promote a culture of life, a culture in which every life is treasured. God’s peace,

Father Salvatore Ruggeri

Our Mission We are the Catholic Community of St. John of the Cross, established in 2009. Uniting the people of God as one family, we are rooted in, and empowered by, our sacramental life and Eucharistic celebrations. Living as disciples of Jesus Christ, we recognize our God given potential and challenge one another to share our giftedness, embrace our diversity, and engage in social outreach, service and education. In doing so, we seek to extend the reign of God in Euclid and the wider community.

A rosary for life will immediately follow the liturgy.

Visit PovertyUSA.org as they seek to educate and promote understanding about poverty and its root causes. Please pray for Migrants and Refugees. The theme, “Many Journeys, One Family,” draws attention to the fact that each of our families have a migration story, some recent and others in the distant past. F.I.A.T.: “Faith In Action Today” Just as in Mary’s “fiat,” the moment she said “yes” to God, may you also say “yes” to sharing your gifts in His service. This week, we recognize the St. John of the Cross Parish staff who goes above and beyond their job duties to assist with ministries’ activities and parish events to help fulfill the mission of the Church. They are truly instruments of God’s work … thank you!

Saint John of the Cross Parish Staff Most of you know our priests and music director, but you may not know the people that work behind the scenes at the parish office in the rectory or on the grounds. If you see one of them working, introduce yourself and thank them for their service and dedication. Read their biographies or contact them for assistance from our parish website at saintjohnofthecross.org/ staff. You can send a note of thanks to their email addresses if you’d like.

Meet Our New Pastoral Associate

Tara Mowery Pastoral Associate 3rd Sunday of Ordinary Time

This month, we welcome our new Pastoral Associate, Tara Mowery to the parish staff who comes to us from Shrine of the True Cross in Dickenson, Texas where she served as Coordinator of Youth Ministry. Tara received her Bachelor of Science from the University of Guelph, Canada, with specialized honors in Theoretical Physics and received her Master of Science in Physics from Queen’s University at Kingston, Canada. Tara was born in Toronto, Canada. She met her husband, Daniel, through the Catholic Newman Center at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. The two have much in common, including a pursuit of science, a love of studying Scripture, a strong Catholic faith and share the same Confirmation name from Michael the Archangel. Tara discerned a call to ministry as a vocation and profession, and moved to the Texas Gulf Coast where she earned two certificates in Youth Ministry. Read more about Tara on our website. 6
