——————————————————————————————————————— Annual Day 2011 The Annual day of UGC-DAE Consortium for Scientific Research (CSR) was celebrated on December 13, 2011. Prof. A. K. Sood, President, Indian Academy of Sciences was the Chief Guest. The function started with Dr. P. Chaddah, Director, UGCDAE CSR, welcoming the guests. He informed the achievements of the Consortium such as utilization and development of various facilities and its research activities, specifically the role of Consortium in providing the access to the big science facilities of the country to the University researchers. He mentioned that a total of about 900 researchers have utilized the facilities of Consortium in the last year. He mentioned about the inauguration and the commissioning of state of the art research facilities at Kalpakkam Node. He then introduced the Chief Guest to the gathering, highlighting his scientific achievements, recognitions and awards.

Prof. Sood, in his address, commended the achievement of CSR in providing access to state of art research facilities to the university researchers and mentioned that the CSR has become a role-model in the country for such Consortia. He spoke on “Incredible Graphene!”, where he discussed emerging applications based on the Graphene and many fascinating physical properties of Graphene translating into new devices. He also discussed his research work and elaborated on the use of Raman spectroscopy in the fabrication and characterization of devices based on Graphene such as field effect transistor, resistive switching elements etc. The alternative analogue materials to Graphene such as layered MoS2 were briefly discussed at the end. After the Chief Guest’s address, the prestigious Prof. R. Srinivasan Award for Low Temperature Physics/Cryogenics was awarded to Shri. P.K. Kush, RRCAT, Indore for the Indigenous Development of Country’s first Helium Liquefier. The CSR award for Scientific Excellence was presented to Dr. Rajeev Rawat of the Indore centre for his immense contribution towards the mandate of the Consortium and carrying out internationally impact making research work. Prof. Ajay Gupta, CentreDirector, UGC DAE CSR, Indore centre, proposed vote of thanks.

The function was attended by members of Scientific Advisory Committee, scientists and academicians from RRCAT, DAVV and other institutions and scientists and students of CSR. The address of Prof. Sood was followed by a poster session highlighting the research activities / facilities of the three Centres at Indore, Kolkata, Mumbai and the Kalpakkam Node and lectures by the awardees in the afternoon session. The day ended with a classical musical program of Sarod Vadan by Shri. Sachin Patwardhan, disciple of Ustad Amjad Ali Khan.

Theme Meeting on Utilization of National Facility for Neutron Beam Research A Theme Meeting on the Utilization of National Facility for Neutron Beam Research (NFNBR) was held during October 1718, 2011 at the Anushaktinagar campus of BARC. This meeting was organized jointly by UGC-DAE CSR Mumbai Centre and Solid State Physics Division (SSPD), BARC and was partially funded by BRNS, DAE. At this meeting, about 25 faculty members from various universities and research institutes across the country were invited to participate and also asked to give brief presentations on how they intend to use neutron scattering facilities available at NFNBR, BARC for their research work. The meeting was inaugurated by Dr. P. Chaddah, Director, UGC-DAE CSR and Dr. S.L. Chaplot, Head, SSPD, BARC gave his introductory remarks. Dr. V. Siruguri, Centre-Director, UGC-DAE CSR Mumbai Centre gave a brief overview of the theme meeting and hoped that it would enhance the utilization of NFNBR in the form of detailed research proposals from the participants. The enthusiasm of the participants was such that some of them had already submitted formal proposals in advance and could make specific presentations for evaluation. Dr. Chaplot gave an overview of the NFNBR followed by talks on the characteristics and capabilities of the various spectrometers at the NFNBR by Drs. P.D. Babu (CSR Mumbai Centre), A. Das, S.M. Yusuf, P.S.R. Krishna, R. Chitra, V.K. Aswal and D. Sen (all from SSPD, BARC). A visit to the NFNBR, Dhruva reactor, BARC was arranged and the participants could interact first-hand with all the instrument scientists and discuss various possibilities of cooperation. On the whole, the participants were highly appreciative of the meeting format and expressed their willingness to submit proposals for neutron scattering experiments.

SCHOOL CUM WORKSHOP ON MAGNETIC PHASE TRANSITIONS AND TRANSFORMATIONS A school cum workshop on Magnetic Phase transitions and Transformations was organized by UGC-DAE CSR Kolkata Centre and Physics department , Jadavpur University Kolkata during August 03-09, 2011 at Jadavpur University main campus. A large number of students and researchers (about 96) from different universities and institutions have participated in the school cum workshop. There were about 45 outstation participants. The school (from 03 to 07 August) was followed by a two day (08 and 09 August) national level workshop on the same topic.

The school was inaugurated by Prof. P. N. Ghosh, the honourable vice chancellor of Jadavpur University. Distinguished scientists working in the low temperature high magnetic field arena were present in the inaugural function. Twenty six lectures were delivered by different experts during five days of the school. The keynote address was delivered by Prof. A. K. Raychaudhuri, Director S. N. Bose National Centre of Basic Sciences, Kolkata. The first technical talk was delivered by Prof. Praveen Chaddah, Director, UGC-DAE CSR, Indore followed by talks by Prof. A. K. Majumdar, Dr. S.B. Roy and Prof. Ajay Gupta. Both theoretical and experimental aspects of magnetic phase transitions and transformations were covered in the lectures given in the school. Theoretical aspects were discussed by Prof. Abhijit Mookerjee, Prof. Indrani Bose, Prof. G. P. Das, Prof. Sulava Bhattacharyya and Dr. Tanusree Saha Dasgupta. The experimental aspects were covered by Prof. B. G. Ghosh, Prof. B. N. Dev, Prof. K. Ghosh Roy, Dr. V. Ganeshan, Dr. Alok Banerjee, Dr. S. K. Bandopadhyay, Prof. S. K. Dey, Dr. P. K. Mukhopadhyay, Dr. K. Mondal , Dr. S. Giri, Dr. S.Majumdar , Dr. V.R. Reddy and Dr. C.Mitra. The subsequent two day workshop was inaugurated by Prof. Subrata Pal, the honourable vice chancellor of Burdwan University. The keynote address was given by Dr. D. Chakravorty. The invited speakers were Prof. R. Ranganathan, Dr. A. Mitra, Dr. T. K. Nath, Dr. P. K. Chakrabarti, Dr. I. Das, Dr. S. Bandopadhyay, Dr. A. Burman, Dr. S. Mukherjee , Dr. C. Biswas and Dr. S. Chatterjee. The workshop ended with distribution of participation certificates to the participants. The certificates were given by Prof Subhas Chandra Bhattacharyya the honourable Dean of Science of Jadavpur University.

National Workshop on Nuclear Physics using Ion Beams from Cyclotrons at VECC A workshop titled “Nuclear Physics using Ion Beams from Cyclotrons at VECC” was organized jointly by the Kolkata Centre of the UGC-DAE Consortium for Scientific Research and Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC), at the VECC campus in Kolkata during August 24-26, 2011. The workshop was primarily intended for the faculty members and the research scholars from the universities and institutes across the country, planning to use the current and upcoming facilities at VECC. It is noteworthy to mention that the beam tests from country’s first Superconducting Cyclotron (SCC) at VECC has reached an advanced stage. The SCC is expected to deliver a large variety of beams over a wide range of energies, thus ushering new frontiers in the domain of nuclear physics research in the country. In addition, the room temperature cyclotron at VECC is currently operational, following an extensive up-gradation exercise, delivering proton and alpha beams. Several state-of-the-art detection facilities are being commissioned and campaigns using these facilities are being planned in near future. The workshop was intended to address the physics problems and the required methodology that can be pursued at the aforesaid facilities.

The workshop was attended by about 100 participants including 22 Research Scholars and 14 faculty members from outside Kolkata. The three day workshop comprised of eleven technical sessions. The inaugural session of the workshop commenced with the welcome address by Dr. A. K. Sinha, Centre Director, UGC-DAE CSR, Kolkata Centre followed by the Presidential address by Dr. R. K. Bhandari, Director, VECC. This was followed by an address by the guest of honour, Prof. L. Chaturvedi, Vice-Chancellor, Guru Ghasidas University, who has been a user of the Cyclotron since its early inception, and shared with the audience his experience and expectations from this facility which has been the mother of all nuclear physics endeavours in the country. Dr. D. K. Srivastava, Head, Physics Group, VECC delivered a talk “Nuclear Physics : The Interest Continues”, wherein after a brief description to the evolution and growth of nuclear physics, he highlighted some of the emerging problems in this domain. Dr. A. Chatterjee, Head, Nuclear Physics Division, BARC gave an Experimental Overview of the existing facilities, available in the country, which set the tone for Workshop. The subsequent sessions of the workshop over three days was addressed by distinguished speakers from the nuclear physics community that led the audience through a rich spectrum of possible nuclear physics research using the VECC facilities. The presentations were followed by intense discussions with inputs from the VECC group on the feasibility of the proposed research. A tour of the VECC SCC and room temperature cyclotron was organized to help introduce the participants to the said facilities. The salient feature of the invited presentations was that they were largely delivered by young researchers who are currently developing these large scale facilities. Some of the recent cyclotron users presented their results before the audience. It is expected that this workshop would help nucleate a collaboration between the University and the VECC, allowing for the optimal use of these facilities by the community.

New Instruments 7-Tesla MPMS SQUID- Vibrating Sample Magnetometer: 30

A 7-Tesla MPMS SQUID- Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) is installed towards the end of 2011 for faster and accurate dc-magnetization measurements of thin films. In the SQUID VSM measurement technique, the sample vibrates at a known frequency and SQUID detection system is employed for signal detection. The magnetic field charging rate can be varied in the range of 4 Oe/sec to 700 Oe/sec. The samples can be cooled from room temperature to a stable 1.8 K in 30 minutes.

Secondary Ion Mass emission Spectroscopy (SIMS): Secondary Ion Mass emission Spectroscopy (SIMS) is a versatile technique for depth profiling. It is used for; parts per billion sensitivity, coatings technology, imaging chemical distributions, fuel cell development, depth profiling, photovoltaics, 3D chemical mapping, metallurgy, diffusion and dopant analysis, pharmaceuticals and isotopic analysis. Hiden SIMS Workstation (see Fig. 1) installed at our centre during August 1-5, 2011. The SIMS workstation is equipped with two ion guns - the IG20 gas ion that can be used with oxygen or other gases and the IG-5C Cs ion gun. Both guns can be operated in the energy range of 0.5 to 5 keV and the minimum beam spot size with gas gun is about 120 micron while that with Cs ion gun is about 50 micron. At the heart of the whole system lies the MAXIM quadrupole SIMS/SNMS analyser that is responsible for the excellent sensitivity of the instrument, it can trace mass from 1 amu to 1000 amu and can give maximum counts up to 10 7. Data collection is done using the Hiden MASsoft software suite. The instrument is pumped with a turbo molecular pump (TMP) and three other TMP with differential pumping. A load lock system makes it possible to introduce samples in the analysis chamber without exposing the system to the atmosphere. Sample holder can hold up to 10 samples at a time. Fig. 2 shows SIMS depth profile of a multilayer with Fe/57Fe contrast. Chemical imagining of surface can also be performed using oxygen ion source operating at 5 keV, 400 nA. Fig. 3 shows SIMS depth profile of [Fe-N (100 nm)/57Fe-15N/FeN(100nm)] sample deposited on Si substrate obtained using oxygen ion source operating at 2 keV, 100 nA. Such trilayer structures are often needed for probing diffusion of a tracer layer. Another powerful feature of SIMS is mass imaging. Fig. 4 shows SIMS image of a standard sample where Al matrix was coated on a Si wafer. The measurement was performed using Cs ion source operating at 5 keV, 1 nA. New Appointments: Dr. Rajarshi Raut joined CSR in August, 2011 as Scientist-D. After completing M. Sc. (Physics) from University of Calcutta in the year 2001, he joined Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics for pursuing his Doctoral studies. His Doctoral thesis pertained to the nuclear structure studies in the vicinity of N=82 shell closure. He was awarded Ph.D. degree in 2009. Thereafter he joined the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory & Department of Physics, Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, USA, as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate. His Post-Doctoral research was on the crosssection measurement of neutron and gamma induced reactions of interests in few body physics, nuclear astrophysics and nuclear applications. Presently, he has been posted at the Kolkata Centre of the Consortium.

Mr Layanta Behera joined CSR Indore Centre as Scientific Assistant – B during October 2011.

Mr. Sushil K Sharma joined CSR Indore Centre as Attendant during November 2011.

Choudhary (UGC DAE CSR, Indore). His Thesis title was “Study of Structural, Transport and Magnetic Properties of Some Magnetic Oxide Compounds”.
