OUR VISION To promote and enhance a healthy, safe and productive environment for the residents of Fairview by providing access to programs, services and information, all while establishing a sense of community identity and belonging.

Saturday, June 16th, 2018 is Neighbour day in Calgary and a perfect time to get to “Know Your Neighbour”. Do you have an old photo of Fairview from the late ‘50s or ‘60s?…the older, the better…or, did you move into Fairview before 1970? Share historical photos of Fairview or your story about how Fairview came to be, like an interesting fact about Fairview, or about living here long ago. To submit photos or to enter your name for your story to be told, contact us. Deadline for submission of photos and your story is Neighbour Day: June 16th 2018. This is an engagement project by the Fairview Community Association’s Safety Committee. Your opinion and ideas matter on how to engage Fairview residents in safety matters. You are welcome to join us for our Safety Committee meetings held the last Tuesday of each month.Next committee meeting: Tuesday, June 26th at 7:30pm. For details, please contact us at [email protected].

Too big for your breeches. Meaning: Conceited; having a too high an opinion of oneself. Origin: An American phrase, it is first found in print in An Account of Col. Crockett’s Tour to the North and Down East, 1835, written by Davy Crockett. “I myself was one of the first to fire a gun under Andrew Jackson. I helped to give him all his glory. But I liked him well once: but when a man gets too big for his breeches, I say goodbye.”

2018 Membership Drive Update - Still Time to Join!!!

This year has been a bit of a challenge for the membership drive. In spite of cold weather, our group of awesome Membership Drive volunteers have built up our membership (as of May 2) to 392. A few of our volunteers are still out selling memberships so you still have the opportunity to buy a membership in this convenient way. Again this year, we had four new volunteers join our veterans and we are so grateful for all the dedicated volunteers. Many long time Fairview residents, particularly on Ferncliff Crescent will be very sad to learn that one of our most dedicated drive volunteers, Henry Spirk, has passed away. Henry was a wonderful neighbour and a frequent volunteer for many Fairview Community events. He will be greatly missed. If you received a flyer to join the Fairview Community Association in your mailbox, please consider joining. We have a volunteer Board of Directors who need to know that residents support the hard work they do for the community. Here is a comparison of our membership sales todate:

If you got the moves, then June is the month for you. Gypsy jazz trio Monsieur Periné kicks off the month with a funny, socially progressive performance at Arts Commons, followed quickly by If It Ain’t Got That Swing by the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, which transports audiences to the era of Ella Fitzgerald, Ethel Waters and Cab Calloway. For the deep thinkers, TEDxYYC ignites discussion with a series of powerful speakers at their ninth annual event. This year they cover areas in technology, entertainment, and design. It’s Calgary’s largest and most well-attended independently organized TED event. Speaking of technology, the Adult Recreational Choir – make up of 150 voices – have created an epic musical tribute to human ingenuity and invention. They will pay tribute to the men and women who have transformed the world as we know it. In partnership with Sled Island, Indigenous Resilience in Music and Drum Beat, National Indigenous Peoples Day is on June 21, with a free mini Pow Wow, featuring traditional drumming, song and dance, and a workshop with hip-hop duos Snotty Nose Rez Kids and Mob Bounce. The day will end with a selection of films from imagineNATIVE – the world’s largest presenter of Indigenous film. Finally, the month ends with more hilarity and satire, as drag queen Trixie Mattel takes the stage with her “Now With Moving Parts” tour. An evening of music, comedy and drag, all ages are welcome to attend. Trixie was crowned the winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars, season three. Have an artful spring Calgary!
