Welcome “I
have no idea how I found time to work at a job 40 hours a week!” I’ve heard this sentiment expressed often by new — and not so new — retirees. Now their days are packed full with grandkid time, golf, volunteering, traveling, creative hobbies and more. Members of my family and baby boomer friends are setting great examples for keeping active. Putting his new knee to the test, my dad walks each morning — clocking 100 miles just this month. Tackling an item on his “bucket list,” Dad also is making impressive progress teaching himself a new language with a computer program and online classes. And he and my mom never miss any of their grandson’s baseball games. I recently had dinner with a couple in their mid-80s who are excited about planning another trip to London. Other newly retired friends have taken up kayaking, painting and playing guitar. Seniors may enjoy rocking on the front porch, but I’m sure I saw many of you who are reading this rockin’ at The Eagles or Fleetwood Mac concerts. Or dancing front and center at the free music nights in the park. Sacramento’s seniors are inspiring and motivating! But of course everybody knows that the retirement years aren’t all fun and games. Important financial, health and lifestyle decisions must be made — or are thrust suddenly upon you. This past year, my lovely grandmother made the major decision to downsize her “stuff” and upsize her social life. She and my mother (pictured with me below) started packing and donating her belongings (lots of items to family members, a yard sale and a large truck o’ stuff to charity). It was a big step, but my grandmother moved out of her duplex and celebrated her 90th birthday in her new apartment in an independent living community where she is enjoying making new friends. Savvy Senior by Jim Miller
E
very adult — especially seniors — should have at least four essential legal documents to protect them and their family. These documents will make sure your wishes regarding your estate are legal and clear. They will help minimize any conflicts and confusion with your family and your health care providers if you become seriously ill or when you die. Here are the key documents you need: A Will: This document lets you spell out your wishes about how you’d like your property and assets distributed after you die, whether it’s to family, friends or a charity. It also allows you to designate an executor to ensure your wishes are carried out, and allows you to name guardians if you have minor or dependent children. In addition to a will, another option you may want to consider is a revocable living trust. This functions like a will but allows your estate to avoid the time and expense of probate (the public legal process that examines your estate after you die) and helps ensure your estate’s privacy. Durable Power of Attorney: This allows you to designate someone you trust to make financial, tax and legal decisions on your behalf if you lose your decision-making capacity. Advanced Health Care Directive: This includes two documents that spell out your wishes regarding your endof-life medical treatment. The two documents are a “living will” which tells your doctor what kind of care you want to receive if you become incapacitated, and a “health care power of attorney” which names a person you authorize to make medical decisions on your behalf if you cannot. Do-It-Yourself: If you have a simple estate and an uncomplicated family situation, there are several do-it-yourself guides and software online that can help you create all these documents for very little money. Get Help: An experienced lawyer can make sure you cover all your bases – especially when writing a will or living trust – which can help avoid family confusion and squabbles after you’re gone. Costs will vary depending on where you reside, but you can expect to pay somewhere between $200 and $1,000 for a will, or $1,200 to $5,000 for a living trust. srgoldenpages.com

Get Up and Go
Travel programs offer variety, safety, adventure By Jennifer K. Morita
O
ver the last decade, Elk Grove resident Carolyn Matthews has racked up thousands of miles, roaming up and down California and into Nevada, thanks to a travel program through the Sunrise Recreation and Parks District aimed at the 55 and older crowd. “It gets me out of the house,” Matthews, 74, said. “My husband is a stayat-home type, who likes to sit in front of the computer, but I like to get out a bit. “This is a very safe and secure way for me travel. I wouldn’t want to go downtown and take off on a bus somewhere by myself.” While park districts and senior centers throughout Sacramento offer a range of relatively inexpensive day trips for older adults, a growing number of travel companies such as Sacramento-based Sports Leisure Vacations are also reaching out to the more mature traveler. Baby boomers will take an average of four to five trips this year alone, according to an online survey conducted last fall for AARP. Among the 1,137 men and women who participated in the survey, 97 percent said they anticipated taking at least one domestic trip in 2015 and 45 percent were planning to travel abroad. “The largest segment of the population, baby boomers, are moving into the senior demographic so there’s going to be a huge demand for travel,” said Mark Hoffman, owner and founder of Sports Leisure Vacations, which specializes in tours for mature, active adults. Even with demand on the rise, the nature of travel is changing, Hoffman added. “People used to travel after they finished doing most everything else in life, after they retired and their children had grown. They had a certain list of srgoldenpages.com
places they’d never been to and wanted to visit,” he said. “Now, travel is a part of people’s day-to-day lives, much more so than 20 or 30 years ago, so that list is very different because people are more active now and have traveled more.”
Older travelers are touring the countryside. Domestic wanderers, who have already seen iconic places such as the Alamo and Statue of Liberty, want to take a trip down Route 66 or go on a ghost hunt in Old Nevada. Instead of an Italian vacation that includes hot spots like Rome and Florence, older travelers are touring the countryside. Domestic wanderers, who have already seen iconic places such as the Alamo and Statue of Liberty, want to take a trip down Route 66 or go on a ghost hunt in Old Nevada. These days, more women are traveling alone, Hoffman said. “These women have had their own careers, their own lives and maybe they raised children, maybe they didn’t.
They’re retired now and out in the travel force, traveling by themselves, which is something their mothers would never have done,” he said. One of the ways Sports Leisure Vacation caters to its 9,000 active travelers is by offering door-to-door transportation for any trips longer than three days. “You don’t have to ask your neighbor for a lift,” Hoffman said. “This is a way of being a little more independent. I have clients who don’t drive anymore, but they travel with us because we pick them up at their house.” Rusch Park Travelers offers trips to Benicia Camel Barns, Northern California casinos, a Lake Tahoe cruise and Forestiere Gardens ranging in price from $29 to $129. Usually, the program offers two to three trips a month. “The trips are very popular,” Rusch Park Travel Coordinator Jackie Bush said. “They have a wonderful time, and we always keep a nice, easy pace on our tours, which is ideal for seniors. A lot of them travel with friends, but if they’re alone they usually make friends along the way.” “It’s a joke. We make everyone introduce themselves to their neighbors before we pass out treats on the bus.” Over the years, Matthews has gone — continued on page 8

How to protect yourself from osteoporosis bone fratures Savvy Senior By Jim Miller
W
hile osteoporosis is much more common in older seniors, it can strike at any age. In fact, the National Osteoporosis Foundation estimates that half of women and up to 25 percent of men in the U.S. over the age of 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis. Here’s what you should know:
Who’s at Risk? Osteoporosis is a disease that causes the bones to become brittle and weak and more susceptible to fractures. Around 10 million Americans already have osteoporosis while another 43 million have “pre-osteoporosis,” or osteopenia. But the good news is this disease is both preventable and treatable. Most people, by the time they reach their late 30s, gradually start losing some of their bone mass, but for women, menopause is the time when this process really accelerates. Bone loss for men occurs much more slowly. However, by age 75, osteoporosis is as common in men as it is in women. Some key risk factors of developing osteoporosis include: being over age 50; being female; menopause; having a family history of the disease; being small and thin; having an eating disorder; not getting enough calcium and vitamin D; getting too much protein, sodium and caffeine; having an inactive lifestyle; smoking; drinking too much alcohol; taking certain medications; and having certain medical conditions. To help you determine your risk of osteoporosis, the National Institutes of Health has a quick, online quiz you can take at bonecheckup.org. Prevention and Treatment A good first step in preventing and treating osteoporosis is to get screened. For women, that should start around menopause, especially if you’re not taking estrogen, or anyone
10 | Sacramento Region Golden Pages 2015
who has broken a bone after age 50 or who has other risk factors. All women over 65 and men over 70 should be tested every two years – Medicare covers it. Screening for osteoporosis is a simple, painless, bone density test, which takes about five minutes. Here’s what else you can do to protect your bones: Boost your calcium: The best way to get bone-building calcium is through your diet. Dairy products (low-fat milk, cheeses and yogurt), dark green leafy vegetables (broccoli, kale, collards), sardines and salmon, cooked dried beans, soy foods, almonds and fortified cereals and juices are all good sources of calcium. Vitamin D is also important to help you body absorb calcium. The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends 1,000 mg of calcium daily for women under age 50 and for men under 70, and 1,200 mg for women 51 and older and for men over 71. They also recommend all adults over age 50 get 800 to 1,000 IU of vitamin D. If you’re not getting enough vitamin D through sunlight or food, consider taking a supplement. Exercise: Weight-bearing exercises like walking, and strength training with weights or resistant bands three or four times a week can also significantly improve your bone health. Control these vices: Avoid smoking, limit alcohol to no more than two or three drinks per day, and limit caffeine to three cups a day. Consider medications: The most widely prescribed for osteoporosis are bisphosphonates, a class of drugs designed to slow or stop bone loss. Talk to your doctor about these and other medication options, as well as potential side effects. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of “The Savvy Senior” book. Tales to Tell
Sharing personal stories enriches family history By Jennifer K. Morita
G
enealogy websites such as ancestry. com have fueled the public’s interest in tracing family roots, making genealogy the second most popular hobby in the U.S. next to gardening. In this digital age, more libraries and archives are putting documents online, making it easier than ever to research familial ties. You can even have your DNA tested for an ancestry-related genetic report. But what do you do after you’ve traced all of Grandma Betty’s relations down to her great-grandfather’s second cousin once removed? Document it, of course. Family historians are finding new ways to pass down their ancestral histories whether it’s a professionally-made video biography or a self-published book. “Life can get very hard, and your children and your grandchildren need to know that they come from strong stock,” said Bubbles Miguel, who has been teaching a life history writing class along with her husband for 20 years. “The more they know of how you’ve managed to live your life and get through the good times and the hard times, the more it will help them get through their lives as well.” The Miguels, both 80, prompt students to write stories that they share in class every week. They also help them organize the material and publish a class anthology by the end of the course. “A lot of people don’t need a class, but being in a class is so stimulating because being with other people reminds you of things you’d forgotten, and if you don’t know the name of something, somebody in the class will know it,” Bubbles said. The Miguels recently attended the funeral of one of their former students,

who was a sailor in the U.S. Navy during World War II. “He wrote his life story and had it published for his family. His son said it was the most wonderful present his father had ever given him,” Bubbles said.
If you have trouble putting pen to paper, however, a video biography is another way to go. Sacramento resident Charles Guare recently started a new venture filming and editing personalized video biogra-
Many of her students print family history books through online publishing companies such as Lulu.com. The Sacramento Public Library’s I Street Press also allows people to self-publish books at a relatively low rate. Set-up fees range from $25 to $300, and the cost per book is $6 plus 3 cents per page.
phies. Guare will interview and record a family member to produce a 60- to 90-minute video that also includes family photos at a cost of between $450 and $600. “I’ve learned that there are a few things that can go wrong with handwritten life histories,” Guare said. “Number one, nobody reads anymore. You give a book to a young kid and they want to watch a video or have something more interactive. Also, a written life history doesn’t really capture the nuances about the way someone comes across. “A video allows a person’s personality, and warmth and humor to come through. I did a video of a woman who was a great-grandmother who had a lot of hand gestures and body movements. The funny thing was, her daughter and granddaughter had the same gestures.” But being on-camera can be nervewracking, so Guare preps his clients by conducting pre-interviews and giving them several pages of questions be-
“He wrote his life story and had it published for his family. His son said it was the most wonderful present his father had ever given him.” “A lot of the online publishers require you to order a minimum number of books,” Bubbles said. “If you just want five copies for your family, the I Street Press is the way to go.”

For more inspiration, the book Legacy, A Step-By-Step Guide to Writing Personal History by Linda Spence offers advice and topics to consider to get your memories flowing. Tell about the talents in your family. What do you know about your grandparents’ lives? Describe a typical day in your household as a child. Tell of something you wish you’d done more often. What were the events leading up to your marriage? What are your favorite vacation memories? What gives you a sense of pride? Sacramento Region Golden Pages 2015 |

Making a Move
Is an Independent Living Community right for you? By Jennifer K. Morita
I
magine living in a cozy apartment where you have a chef that cooks for you twice a day, a housekeeper and even a driver to take you places. Who wouldn’t want to live in a place like that? Many older adults, who are still active and can live on their own, are choosing to move into independent living communities that may be smaller than what they’re used to, but come with great perks. An independent living facility is a category of retirement housing that falls between an active older adult community and assisted living. Residents can live autonomously but receive convenient services such as two meals a day, weekly housekeeping, transportation and organized activities. “But they don’t get help with medication management or showering, and the residents are still basically pretty independent,” said Cindy Doty, a senior living advisor for A Place for Mom in Sacramento. Seniors living in the Sacramento region have a wide variety of independent living options, ranging in price from $1,120 a month to $4,000 or more. Accommodations include studios with kitchenettes, as well as one- and twobedroom apartments with full kitchens. The demand for independent living facilities is on the rise. Occupancy for these independent living communities rose to 91.3 percent compared to assisted living facilities which stayed at 89.3 percent, according to a fourth quarter 2014 report from the National Investment Center for Senior Housing & Care. “They’re becoming more popular especially now that the economy is better,” Doty said, adding that during the recession, many seniors chose to stay in their homes because of low property values.

“They were not going to take a loss, so we saw more people moving into assisted living because they had to. But now that the economy is better, you are seeing more independent people deciding that they can sell their homes, make a decent living and not have to cook or clean.”
“Now that the economy is better, you are seeing more independent people deciding that they can sell their homes, make a decent living and not have to cook or clean.” Doty helps seniors and their loved ones find a place to live by figuring out what their needs are, and what they can afford. “We have all these questions we ask so we can find out about the individual and decide whether it’s better for them to be independent, or be in an assisted living facility,” Doty said.
Some ways to gauge whether a loved one can still live independently include: Do they keep a well-stocked pantry and variety of fresh fruits and veggies? Are they aware of foods that may interact with his or her medication? Is there rotten or expired food in the refrigerator? Can they easily operate a microwave? Do they have a healthy appetite? Do they recognize family and friends? Have they gotten lost in the community or experienced an episode of confusion? Have they visited a dentist, optometrist or physician in the past year? Are they maintaining a healthy, consistent weight? Are they taking medications properly and as directed? Are they able to walk independently indoors and outdoors with a steady gait? — continued on next page srgoldenpages.com

Are there signs of falling such as bruises or scratches? Are they driving safely? Are they able to retrieve newspapers and mail safely? Are they able to get in and out of bed safely? Are they able to use the toilet independently? Are they able to transfer into the bath or shower safely? Doty emphasized that the best way to find a retirement home is to schedule tours of various facilities. “You’ll see these places are really nice,” Doty said. Keep informed and aware to avoid scams and fraud
cams, identity theft and fraud continue to affect millions of people every year — many of whom are seniors. The California Department of Consumer Affairs has helpful information about many services as well as links to other valuable resources on their website, www.dca.ca.gov/consumer/ seniors. The site offers the following information about several scams along with information about how consumers can protect themselves: Fight phony “phishers” and other identity thieves: You may get a call from an “inspector” or “officer” with the bank who asks you to help catch a criminal by confirming your account or credit card number or by withdrawing money. Or you get an e-mail telling you to confirm your account information, and it looks like it’s from your bank and sends you to a website that looks like your bank’s. Don’t take the bait! Never give out account or password information unless you made the call or went to the company’s secure website yourself. Legitimate companies will never ask for such information this way, by phone or e-mail. Check out charities before you give: You receive a phone call seeking donations for a charity. The caller sounds sincere, and the cause seems worthy, but you’ve never heard of the organization. It’s best to ask that information be mailed to you so you can research the charity before you decide. If the caller refuses, don’t donate, simply hang up. Above all, don’t give out your credit card or bank account number! Be wary -- these charlatans also use names similar to those of reputable charities. To check on a charity and for tips on giving wisely, call the California Attorney General toll-free (800) 952-5225 (in California) or go to http://oag.ca.gov/charities. Disconnect from telemarketers: If you are tired of receiving telemar-

keting calls, you can help pull the plug by registering your number with the National Do Not Call Registry, www.donotcall.gov. Avoid Contractor Capers: You are falsely told that your roof needs replacing at a cost of thousands of dollars. Or workers just “happen” to be in your area with some leftover paving material from “a job down the street.” Or someone drops by and offers to trim your trees for a bargain price. Don’t fall for it! These scams usually result in substandard work from unlicensed contractors who disappear after they get your money. Call the Contractors State License Board at (800) 321-2752 for a copy of “What You Should Know Before Hiring a Contractor” or visit the Board’s website at www.cslb.ca.gov. Bypass Bogus Sweepstakes: If you receive a letter, e-mail or phone
call implying that you’ve won a sweepstakes, be careful. Some con artists use the lure of a big sweepstakes prize to convince unsuspecting consumers to send in money to claim a “prize” they’ve won. Sometimes the con artists tell consumers they need to pay a fee to cover the taxes or service charges on their winnings. Most times the prize is just scam. The newest version of this scam involves crooks who use names of government agencies and legitimate phone numbers to deceive consumers. The California Department of Consumer Affairs has prepared a “Senior Scambuster Kit” which can be found online at the Department’s website, or call the Department’s toll-free consumer hotline at (800) 952-5210 to ask a consumer assistance specialist for information.

How to make your bathroom safer Savvy Senior By Jim Miller
B
ecause more accidents and injuries happen in the bathroom than any other room in the house, this is a very important room to modify for aging in place. Depending on your needs, here are some tips for each part of the bathroom that can make it safer and easier to use. Flooring: To avoid slipping, a simple fix is to get non-skid bath rugs for the floors. Or if you want to put in a new floor, get slip-resistant tiles, rubber or vinyl flooring, or install wall-to-wall carpeting. Lighting: Good lighting is also very important, so install the highest wattage bulbs allowed for your bathroom fixtures. And get a plug-in nightlight that automatically turns on when the room gets dark. Bathtub/shower: To make bathing safer, purchase a rubber suction-grip mat, or put down adhesive nonskid tape on the tub/shower floor. And have a carpenter install grab bars in and around the tub/shower for support. If you use a shower curtain, install a screw or bolt-mounted curtain rod, versus a tension-mounted rod, so that if you lose your balance and grab the shower curtain, the rod won’t spring loose. If you have mobility issues or balance problems, get a shower or bathtub seat so you can bathe from a seated position. In addition, you may also want to get a handheld, adjustableheight showerhead installed that will make washing while sitting down easier. Another pricier option is to install a walk-in-bathtub or a prefabricated curbless shower. Walk-in tubs have a door in front that provides a much lower threshold to step over than a standard tub. They also typically have a built-in seat, handrails and a slip resistant bottom, and some have therapeutic spa features with whirlpool water jets and/or bubble massage air jets.

| Sacramento Region Golden Pages 2015
Curbless showers have no threshold to step over, and typically come with a built-in seat, grab bars, slip resistant floors and an adjustable handheld showerhead. Prefabricated curbless showers and walk-in-tubs typically cost anywhere between $2,500 and $10,000 installed. Toilet: Most toilets are about 14 to 16 inches high which can be an issue for many people with arthritis, back, hip or knee problems. To raise the toilet height, which can make sitting down and getting back up a little easier, you can purchase a raised toilet seat that clamps to the toilet bowl, and/or purchase toilet safety rails that sit on each side of the seat for support. Or, you can install an ADA compliant toilet that ranges between 17 and 19 inches high. Faucets: If you have twist handles on the sink, bathtub or shower faucets, replace them with lever handle faucets. They’re easier to operate, especially for people with arthritis or limited hand strength. Also note that it only takes 130-degree water to scald someone, so turn the hot water heater down to 120 degrees. Entrance: If you need a wider bathroom entrance to accommodate a walker or wheelchair, install some “swing clear” offset hinges on the door which will widen the doorway an additional two inches. Emergency assistance: As a safety precaution, purchase a waterproof phone for the bathroom or get a medical alert device (SOS emergency call button) that can be worn in case you need to call for help. You can find all of the products suggested in this column at either medical supply stores, pharmacies, big-box stores, home improvement stores, hardware and plumbing supply stores as well as online. Warning Signs for Family, Caregivers By Jennifer K. Morita
W
ith seniors living longer, more active lives, it’s no surprise they’re also staying in their own homes longer, but it doesn’t mean they couldn’t use a little help. The Home Instead Senior Care Advisory Board composed a list of warning signs to help caregivers and loved ones determined whether a senior needs additional assistance at home: A change in appearance or condition of the home — People may neglect the house because they lack the energy, or no longer care, which could be a sign of depression. Unpaid bills — They find ordinary tasks such as opening and responding to mail or balancing a checkbook overwhelming, so they stop paying household bills. Losing interest in meals — Seniors, particularly after the death of a spouse, can be discouraged by cooking and may not eat properly. Fresh food may be replaced with junk food and there may be spoiled food in the fridge or freezer. Reluctance to leave the house — People struggling with simple functions such as walking, remembering and hearing, won’t ask for help, isolating themselves from the community instead. Declining personal hygiene — Changes in appearance, unkempt hair, body odor, wearing the same

It’s also better to have these discussions before there’s a crisis. One way to start the conversation is by posing a series of hypothetical whatif scenarios, and asking your loved one how he or she would want you to handle the situation. Family gatherings can be an ideal time to look for warning signs or changes, particularly for grown children who live out of town. Holidays and special occasions can also be a chance to have those important conversations and talk to seniors about the future. Giving Time and Talent
Seniors reaping rewards from volunteer activities By Jennifer K. Morita
Older adults may be enjoying their golden years, but they’re also hard at work in their communities. Senior volunteering is at a 10-year high, according to the Corporation for National and Community Service. One in three volunteers in the United States is aged 55 and older, and in 2013 alone more than 20 million senior volunteers
contributed nearly 3 billion hours of service. These volunteers are not only giving back to their communities, they’re also reaping a few benefits. Research shows people who volunteer have lower mortality rates, greater functional ability and lower rates of depression, according to the Corporation for National and Community Service. Volunteering can also offer physical and social activity. For many sen-
iors, including Sacramento volunteers Peggy Coppin and Jerry Jaggers, the work also provides a sense of purpose, whether it’s raising money for libraries, feeding the homeless or helping our four-legged citizens. Want to volunteer? Check out these web sites for volunteer opportunities in the Sacramento region: www.volunteermatch.org www.handsonsuperiorcal.org www.nprcenter.org
Peggy Coppin volunteers at the Front Street Animal Shelter, averaging between 80 to 90 hours a month, as well as fostering dogs in her home.
and just haven’t given her back. I’m also fostering another little dog. Q: How has volunteering enhanced or benefitted you? Coppin: I took care of people for the majority of my life and it was very rewarding. But at the shelther, the people are so wonderful. It just makes my heart soar to go down there. I just love it. I love everything about it. The animals are the icing on the cake. I love the people that work there, they could all be my grandkids. It’s a lovely work environment. When I first started there, I’d never been thanked so much in my whole life. Every time I turned around, an employee was saying thanks for doing this, or thanks for being here. It’s just kind of humbling because you don’t think what you’re doing is a big deal. It gives you a bit of purpose. Some of the employees take animals home with them so they can watch them overnight. It makes you feel good that they really want to be there and make a difference in these animals’ lives.

hen Sacramento dog-lover Peggy Coppin, 64, retired from her highstress job as an operating room nurse, she took two years off to “decompress” before volunteering for the city-run Front Street Animal Shelter. “I worked a lot in my job, and I had no time to do anything. So when I retired, I decided to volunteer,” Coppin said. “I figured the city shelter didn’t have much money, so that’s why I went there.” With less than two years under her belt, Coppin already averages between 80 and 90 hours a month at the shelter, not counting the time she spends at home fostering animals before they can be adopted. Last year, she racked up more than 1,200 hours between basic shelter duties, fostering dogs and standing in front of pet stores doing off-site adoptions. Q: What are your responsibilities at the shelter? Coppin: Everybody has to start with scooping poop and doing the dishes, the laundry. You need 20 hours of basic shelter duties before you can really branch out. I’ve taken all the dog classes, so I work with the dogs, help the foster/rescue coordinator, and I have worked in the medical building, where
46 | Sacramento Region Golden Pages 2015
we spay and neuter animals, washing instruments. I also do off-site adoptions, where we take animals out into the community, such as pet stores, so people can look at them and adopt from there. Well over 100 animals have been adopted from out in the field. I also walk the dogs, and work with them in the kennels. I sit and read to them, sing to them, talk to them, play little games. It’s just so they have some interaction so they don’t go kennel crazy. Q: How many pets do you have? Coppin: I have three licensed dogs, and a foster dog that I’ve had for a year

erry Jaggers has made a career of volunteering – and it’s a long one. The retired aerospace engineer has been giving back to his community since 1965 when he started a Friends of the Library branch in Arlington, Texas. At age 76, Jaggers isn’t slowing down. Since moving to California, Jaggers has spent several decades serving first on the Sacramento County Grand Jury, then on the board of directors for the California Grand Jurors’ Association before returning to his library roots two years ago. Today, Jaggers sits on the Friends of the Sacramento Public Library board, and is co-president of his local Friends branch in Rancho Cordova. “Every cent we make either goes to expenses or directly to the libraries,” Jaggers said. “Every year, we almost deplete our bank account by supporting programs they have. There are over 1,000 programs a year at the Rancho Cordova Library alone.”
“It’s just rewarding knowing that the effort you spend is helping somebody and helping the community.” Friends of the Library raises money for local libraries and funds special programs such as monthly senior brunches and children’s story times as well as purchases books for lending. Q: Why did you choose to volunteer for Friends of the Library? Jaggers: While I was going to college I’d go to used bookstores, and I always wanted to run a bookstore. When the library in Arlington, Texas decided to start a Friends, there was a bank that had gone out of business. So we started our used bookstore there. We had all the discards from the library and donated books that we sold. Q: In addition to serving on the board, what do you do for Friends? Jaggers: I do way too much, according to my wife. I work at the Book Den, which is our

used bookstore, where we have about 100,000 books for sale. About a year ago, I started working on the Amazon desk, where we list books on amazon. com. To give you an idea, last month we made close to $7,000 selling used books on Amazon and eBay. Q: Do you think you’ve benefitted from your volunteer work? Jaggers: Absolutely, I particularly like the Amazon work. It’s like a treasure hunt. You get a stack of books and look at it and you have to find out how much this book is worth. We had a 10-year-old medical book and I was thinking, ‘Who’d want this?’ Well, we found out it was worth $100. It’s literally a treasure hunt. You don’t know what you’re going to find. But mostly, it’s about getting books back into the community. We donate books to various organizations, to senior citizens. One lady has a stand somewhere in South Sacramento where she puts up a sign: Take a Book, Leave a Book. Plus, it keeps the brain cells alive. It’s just rewarding knowing that the effort you spend is helping somebody and helping the community, and in particular, getting books to people who can’t afford them. Don’t Just Move In,
Move Home
100% Satisfaction Guarantee Taking care of your family is my passion and an extremely personal experience. I became involved in caring for seniors when I learned first-hand the challenges of caring for a loved one. As primary caregiver for my mother, I was determined to develop a supportive senior community that would provide superior services and allow her to be independent and enjoy her life. That’s when I made a commitment to build a caring, family-based community to meet her needs and the needs of other seniors, too. Our communities offer vibrant activities, fun outings, fresh meals, and live entertainment. Most important is that our staff is well trained, caring and family-oriented. Years ago, my mom ingrained in me "If a job is worth doing, do it right." Those words still ring in my ears and we strive to live them every day. Tom MacDonald Founder
