Sacred Heart Catholic Church - Bellingham, WA Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Today we come to the end of our Church year with the Feast of Christ the King. In this Feast we commemorate the fact that Christ, as the Son of God, is King of all creation. Interestingly our Gospel speaks not of a grand throne from which God reigns over all He has made, but rather of the place great shame and apparent defeat: the cross of Jesus crucified. As St. Paul tells us, the folly of the cross is that it is the great wisdom of God which puts human wisdom to shame. As creatures we will never understand the cross, but as children of the Most High, we are invited to participate with Christ in the cross as the great action of salvation. It is only here that meaning is given to our existence and we transcend our broken world in favor of the new life to come. I'm out this weekend. On Saturday, I’m with the Newman students on their fall retreat. On Sunday, I’ll be down in Federal Way for the Archdiocese's diaconate training program. When they realized that one of the deacon candidates, Kirk Altenhofen, is related to me—he's my Dad—they asked me to make a guest appearance to celebrate Mass for the group. This diaconate program is the same program that our very own Dale Pollard is engaged in. Please make sure you pray for all the deacon candidates as the continue their discernment with the Archdiocese. Next Sunday is the start of Advent and the beginning of our new Church year, meaning we will be swapping out all the music books for the new edition of Breaking Bread. All you 11 am Mass goers, if you are available afterwards, to help with the swapping-out process, it would be greatly appreciated! We will be having our RE wreath-making party next Sunday during coffee hour along with other events, so make sure to come if you’re in town after Thanksgiving. This year we will have the longest possible Advent season, because Christmas falls on a Sunday, so your wreath will get lots of use. On this same subject, make sure to note that our Christmas Mass schedule is not the same as our normal Sunday schedule. We will have a 5 pm Children's Mass, along with a 9 pm Vigil and Midnight Mass, and only one Mass at 10 am Christmas morning. I’m telling you this so that you won’t be showing up just as the last Mass is ending—it wouldn't be a great way to kick off your Christmas season. Prayers Always, Fr. Joseph Altenhofen

Universal: That the countries which take in a great number of displaced persons and refugees may find support for their efforts which show solidarity. Evangelization: That, within parishes, priests and lay people may collaborate in service to the community without giving in to the temptation of discouragement.

During the abortion procedure, I experienced fear, grief, guilt, and regret. I really don't remember much other than lying on the table and stopping the procedure three times before coming to the realization everything was over. I cried for days. After the procedure, I became what I would describe as "numb". I smiled on the outside, but on the inside I felt empty. As time went on after the abortion, I still felt ashamed, regretful, and fell into a deep depression as I kept my experience silent. I regret the choice I made to this day. I never really sought help because I was too ashamed to talk about my abortion. In 2009 I began to share my story. My outlook on life has become a lot brighter, and I don't hold myself to the past any longer. Though it still hurts seven years later, I know my God has forgiven me, so I must live and help others and be SILENT NO MORE!! Adapted, Ebony’s Testimony

Catechesis Corner Why be morally good? Well, in William Mattison’s book “Introducing Moral Theology: True Happiness and the Virtues,” he offers two different concepts of morality. The first is called the morality of obligation. The basis of this concept is that people view following moral rules as an obligation, because it doesn’t get them what they want. They believe what they immediately want to do will bring them happiness. The second concept is based on Socrates’ view of morality, which is the morality of happiness. In this concept we follow “genuine moral rules” by choice, knowing that our choices will bring us a “good, truly satisfying life.” It is the theory that “reflection on human happiness leads naturally to morality and ethics as a path to that good life, rather than some impediment to it.” These concepts have given me a new perspective on my choices in life. I know that I want to make moral decisions—this is asked of me by God—so I now reflect on what my intentions are. When I feel obligated to do something, I am less likely to enjoy the outcome because I am busy thinking that the alternative would have made me happy. I try to adjust that thinking since I want to find joy in making moral decisions; therefore, if the moral decision is not the impediment to my happiness, it is my own attitude. For then, regardless of the outcome, I can follow the theological and cardinal virtues, and take satisfaction from knowing I did the right thing. In no way do I claim to be a virtuous person, but I understand in heart why I want to be. 3

Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Bellingham, WA ~ November 20, 2016 Thanksgiving Day Mass will be at 9 am. Please bring some non-perishable food to donate to the Southside Food Bank. Father will bless it, and you will bless others with your generosity to the poor. Happy Thanksgiving!

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, his mercy endures forever. -Ps 118:1

Giving Tree Sacred Heart is sponsoring a Giving Tree for local children in need. Instead of buying actual gifts, parishioners are invited to purchase $15 gift cards from Kmart, WalMart, Fred Meyer, or Target. Here’s how: 1. Pick up a Giving Tree tag in the church or parish hall. 2. Purchase a $15 gift card at WalMart, Kmart, Fred Meyer, or Target. 3. Put the gift card(s) in the collection basket by Dec. 11. Questions? Kathy Denney, 676-0197, or Cheryl McCarthy, 630-887-6634, email [email protected]. PREPARES MINISTRY THANKS YOU We want to thank everyone for the generous donations given to PREPARES for young pregnant women and mothers at New Way Ministries. These are homeless families who are greatly in need, and you have helped to fill that need. We gave out 21 Prepares bags filled with diapers, clothing, shoes, and toys. We also received cash donations which helped us buy shoes and other needed items. All of your gifts were very much appreciated by these women and children, as they came from your generous hearts. We thank you!

Except for a few niche clothing items sold in a few boutiques, as of yet no major chain sells fair trade clothing originating from other countries. But we know that most of it comes from places we read on our labels: Bangladesh, China, India, Vietnam, Honduras, Mexico. Pope Francis has called the wages paid those workers: “slave labor.” For years members of the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility have engaged retailers, including Macy’s and Kohl’s, on supply chain issues. They have rejected calls to address wages at the sites where our clothes are made. If you agree with us, we’d ask you to sign, stamp, and mail a postcard to Macy’s and to Kohl’s telling them as much. Both of these companies have good track records in various areas; but if they would support this effort, things would be so much better. We are telling them: If they will lead, we will buy. Between now and Black Friday (Nov. 25), postcards are being sent to the CEOs of Macy’s and Kohl’s in support of a living wage at the sites where our clothes are made. We ask for your involvement. Postcards are available on the table in the entrance to Sacred Heart. For more information, please visit www.humanthreadcampaign.org.

THANK YOU to Char and Charlie Dunn and all the many helping hands it took to put on an amazing Oktoberfest celebration! The Evening in Bavaria party was a tremendous success, and we all appreciate the hard work and many hours of planning it took to help our parish community celebrate Fall in such a fun and festive way! Third graders at Assumption participated in “Immigration Day” last week in an effort to understand the plight of immigrants from Europe in the early part of the century. With the help of parent volunteers, the students journeyed through the experience of things like Ellis Island, quarantine, and interviews. Each student had an immigrant story through which they acted out the experience. Some of the “immigrants” are pictured here. Thank you to Mrs. Paula Martin-Zender for organizing this for her students! 4

Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Bellingham, WA ~ November 20, 2016 Prepare the Way of the LORD We are excited to offer an Advent prayer study and video series for the four weeks leading to Christmas! We will be offering this study at two different times: Wednesdays beginning Nov. 30th during Faith Formation at 10 am, and Friday Family Evenings beginning Dec. 2 at 6 pm. Wednesdays at 10 am: Coffee, fruit, and snacks provided.

Fridays at 6 pm: For our first night together, we will have an Italian potluck! Bring a dish to share. After we eat, we will begin the study. Bring the whole family!

All are welcome and encouraged to come for Adoration: So often, as individuals and families consider making a weekly commitment to Eucharistic Adoration, they ask us for hints on how to spend those precious minutes or that hour in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. And the best response we have found is to simply use the time in any way you wish – • Reading the Holy Bible • Speaking to Jesus heart-to-heart as one does with a friend • Praying the Rosary • Turning to a favorite book of prayers or spiritual reading • Sitting and relaxing in silence, enjoying the sweet peace that comes from simply being with the One who loves you most. No commitment or appointment necessary – just come! See bulletin schedule for times and locations. Please call Penny C. for details at 714-8190. We need more data for the Parish Survey—we haven’t had enough responses! We need about 170 more before the survey closes in order to get a good sample. There’s still time to take part! Visit www.sacredheartbellingham.org and take the anonymous survey online, or pick up a copy at the back of the church. This survey measures individual engagement and helps us understand how we can improve as a parish overall. Don’t delay—it is only open for a limited time. Your opinions matter! Thanks!

We will be serving Thanksgiving Dinner for Francis Place residents again this year. Last year, we had close to 40 people at the meal and we’ll have even more this year. We will be preparing hot items here at Francis Place and we are looking for volunteers to purchase or prepare and drop off food prior to Thanksgiving day. Please contact Malora Christensen at 393-7745 if you can help.

The Pivotal Players series continues after Thanksgiving, Thurs., Dec.1, in the Hall at 6:45 pm. Join us for a fascinating look at the people of our faith who have helped shape the world. Our last lesson in the series will feature Michelangelo. Social Justice Corner by a Member of the Social Justice Committee Join us for a Fair Trade sale! As we start thinking about holiday gifts, we can make our shopping much more than just buying a present. We will be hosting a Fair Trade Sale in the Hall this Sunday, Nov. 20, during coffee hour, and next weekend, Nov. 26/27, after all the Masses. Buying Fair Trade is an opportunity to shop in solidarity with artisans and farmers in developing countries around the world. This sale features items from CRS fair trade partner SERRV, a non-profit company currently working directly with 60 community groups in 30 countries. We will also have baskets and woven items from Guatemalan artisans available through Upavim and Mayan Hands, and unique Christmas ornaments and nativities from Thai crafters through Pilgrim Imports. Your purchases at our sale are gifts that give five times! Your loved ones receive lovely, thoughtful gifts, and your purchases benefit others globally and locally. Globally: farmers and craftspeople in developing countries are able to earn a fair wage for their work, the mission of SERRV in marketing their products is supported, and CRS receives a portion of all sales from its partners for community development. Locally: all profits from our sale will be donated to St. Vincent de Paul to use for their Christmas Fund. As well as items on hand, we'll have CRS Fair Trade catalogs available for additional orders. We are looking forward to the sale! Be sure to come with cash or checkbook, as we can’t take credit cards. Questions, comments: [email protected] 5
