L ETTER FROM THE P AS TOR Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

As you read this letter I will be with my family in Belle Vernon, PA celebrating my mom’s Funeral Mass. Again, thank you all for your expressions of prayerful love and support, the Masses you had said for Mom, and for being my “parish family.” As you have done so often when tragedy was visited upon our parish or on some member of our parish, you have touched my heart.

As all priests do, as my parents have aged, I have been anticipating the preaching of their funerals for some time. This is not a morbid anticipation, but just a fact of life. But I will admit to you that I am having difficulty finding words. It’s not a lack of subject matter concerning Mom’s remarkable life…nor is it a lack of faith in Our Lord. Rather, it’s a deep desire to allow the Lord to use this time for His purpose, and to give voice to what everyone will be feeling concerning the death of my mom, and then to proclaim what we, the Church, believe concerning those who rest in the Lord.

My family, like most families is a mix of everything concerning faith, from agnostic to deeply Catholic. This is one of those most precious experiences in a priest’s life that he really wants to get right.

Mi familia, como la mayoría de las familias, es una mezcla de todo lo concerniente a la fe, desde agnóstica hasta profundamente Católica. Esta es una de esas experiencias más preciadas en la vida de un sacerdote y no quiero equivocarme.

As Jesus leaves the “wilderness” of his own temptations by Satan he goes next to the Jordan, where John is baptizing…and John exclaims, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” God shows himself to us in the experiences of life…not on our schedule, but on His. John knows that he must now “decrease, so that Christ might increase.” I think that will be my attitude as well with my mom’s Funeral Mass…I will do my best to get out of the way, so that He might increase in the hearts and souls of Mom’s family and friends gathered in prayer.

I will also be remembering all of you in prayer, and ask that you pray for my mom and family as well. In Christ’s peace,

Our Catholic Faith: Spiritual Journaling Last week, we gifted the parish with journals and prayer stickers. It was our Epiphany “Little Christmas” gift to you. We are giving our final gift of Christmas – a journal – a notebook – for you to use in a number of ways. Write down your plans. Reflect on how you will get there – and how God will lead you. Pray about it. Share your story with others. Each week, we will share a reflection of the week – something to add to the pages of your life in this journal. Prayer stickers to consider, to discuss in your SMALL GROUPS, at Bible Study, Life Teen etc. For those of you who may have missed it, this is what Fr. Charlie said about the spiritual practice of journaling during his homily last week. “When life rises up and ‘happens,’ we need not only to find a way to move to plan B, or C or D, but we also need to find a way to understand and believe that God is present in the unfolding of our lives. How do you do that? I came to this parish 23 years, and when I came to St. Mary Magdalen, I began to journal. I’ve been keeping a journal ever since. In these journals, I write down (daily, weekly, monthly) the significant things that impacted my life. It’s like, I’m writing down the story of my life – in episodes. But I leave wide columns on either side of the journal, because I will go back later and fill in the sides with insights. Maybe after an event happened in my life, and I bring it to prayer, God gives me an insight then I will write it down in the margins. Or maybe I will be reading along a passage from scripture and I find something that directly gives meaning to that experience in my life and I’ll go back and fill it in with that scripture quote or a spiritual reading, making its connection. I’ve been journaling now all these years that I’ve been at St. Mary Mag. Something about you got me to journal, and I appreciate it, because when life happens, it’s like it’s too close – it’s too close and in our face and so it’s impossible to take a step back and get any perspective. AND that’s what we need in order to see how God’s plan impacts our lives. Sometimes we need perspective on a situation, and that’s when we need some distance. You can’t see the forest for the trees. Journaling can give you that perspective. I find that I’ll go back and revisit the years past that I have written in the journal and I can see now, as these years build upon years, how God’s hand has been with me, through the chaotic times, through the fearful times, as well as through the wonderful times in my life. So as you came in this morning, as we promised, we said we would be gifting you through the season of Christmas and one of the gifts is this journal. We would like each one of you to have one of these. These were given to us, the parish, through an anonymous donation by one of the families of our parish, with the intention of giving them on to you. We’d like you to have this journal and to use it and by using it I mean write down the stories of your life. What are the things that have impacted you in your life? What are the things that really got to the heart and soul of you, in good ways, in challenging ways? Write them down. But leave room – perhaps, on the left side you write the stories of your life, and on the right side you save for editing – this is where you will be adding those spiritual insights that will give you perspective. It will give you the distance to see God’s plan in your life. Now this isn’t supposed to be like “oh my gosh, another thing to do, another spiritual thing to do.” If it’s that -don’t do it. Sometimes, I find myself writing every day in the journal, sometimes I skip weeks or months – I write when the moment needs to be documented. And you’ll know it, it’s when life rises up and happens and you need to find an outlet. That’s when you’ll grab the journal and you’ll write it down so you will remember for posterity, for perspective, when plan A does not happen. So frequently we are a people of plan B because plan A’s rarely happen. Like I said before, it’s the old adage, if you want to make God laugh, tell him you have a plan. When plan A doesn’t happen, what do you do? The Magi were people of plan B. After they brought their gifts, following the light of a star, to the feet of a newborn savior, they were told not to return to Herod. So they returned to their home by another way. Plan B can be just a much the plan of God as plan A.”

~ Homily on journaling by Fr. Charlie Mitchell, January 7-8, 2017
