• WHAT DOES COMPARE AND CONTRAST MEAN? • WHAT IS A VENN DIAGRAM?
9 – 11 Year Olds
Duration 1 x 60 minute Session
Learning Intention / Overview
You will need: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Book Venn Diagram
This activity will allow students to develop an understanding of how the Venn Diagram can help organize events and other story elements by comparing and contrasting. Students will discuss comparing and contrasting
Teaching Instructions Sometimes as teachers we need to help students learn to organize thoughts and ideas presented in text. Instead of writing paragraphs, which at times can be overwhelming to many learners, graphic organizers are shortened ways to organize information. The visual image presented in a graphic organizer is also beneficial. This allows students to group information into categories for connections to become long lasting. These activities should be done after reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and after watching the original movie. Activity 1: Ask for student volunteers to define the word COMPARE (how things are ALIKE). Accept any reasonable definition. Discuss how you could compare apples and oranges. Both are fruits, have peelings, are juicy, are grown on trees, etc. Then ask for student volunteers to define the word CONTRAST (how things are DIFFERENT). Accept any reasonable definition. Discuss how you would contrast apples and oranges. Apples come in three colors (red, yellow, green) while oranges are one color, orange. Oranges you usually peel before eating but you can eat the peeling off apples. Apples have a smoother peeling while oranges are textured. Display the next page containing the Venn diagram. Discuss how this organizational tool is made up of 2 overlapping circles, which are used to visually compare and contrast the information about apples and oranges.
Venn diagram answer sheet: Answers will vary. These given are just a few similarities/differences.
