Corinthia Hotel London, the city’s superb new Grand Hotel, is right at the heart of the great metropolis, close to Trafalgar Square and the River Thames. A short stroll north past Nelson’s Column takes you to London’s world class theatres, art galleries and opera houses. Head south, and you can cross the footbridge over the Thames where the Southbank Centre’s inspiring arts complex and the London Eye await. To the west are the shops of Piccadilly and St James’s, while the City of London is a short taxi ride away to the east. Our starting point was an important historic building. For half a century until the 1930s, the Hôtel Métropole was located here. This is where Mantovani made his name as a conductor, and the splendid Victorian ballroom where his orchestra played survives to this day, now sensitively restored and remodelled.
