Sailing ADVENTURE from lisbon, portugal to san sebastian, spain

with an Optional extension to St. Jean de Luz, Biarritz, and Bordeaux, France

We have privately chartered this magnificent tall ship for our very favorite and most fun-loving travelers, friends of Young Life. Denny and Marilyn Rydberg are hosting the sailing. During his almost 22-year tenure as President of Young Life, Denny has achieved "frequent sailor status" with the Sea Cloud sailing yachts. This 2015 voyage will make the Rydbergs' 14th full-ship charter for special people who love Young Life. What adventures and fun we've had! Together we've taken the Sea Cloud II and her fleetmate, the original 1931 Sea Cloud, to virtually every European country with a coastline. Twice we've retraced the Journeys of the Apostle Paul in Turkey and Greece. Then St. Petersburg and the Baltic. Scandinavian fjords. The British Isles from the Shetlands to the English Channel. The entire coasts of France, Belgium and the Netherlands. In the Mediterranean, it's hard to think of a significant port we've missed. We've also sailed with Denny, Marilyn, and scores of Young Life friends amongst the Windward and Leeward Islands of the Caribbean. And in March of last year, we transited the Panama Canal on our voyage to Costa Rica and Panama. May 2015's itinerary will fill in the last missing stretch in Europe.

EXPLORING THE

IBERIAN PENINSULA

It has been a couple of years since we've organized our last Young Life sailing. We're experiencing a bit of withdrawal. How about you? Easy to solve; let's gather for a time of Exploring the Iberian Peninsula on the sailing yacht rated #1 in the world, the Sea Cloud II. Yes, a true sailing ship…384 feet long…a main mast towering the height of a 19-story building…30,000 square feet of canvas set the oldfashioned way, by hand! Ranked top Small Cruise Ship by Condé Nast.

San Sebastian

We trust you'll be charmed by the upcoming 10-Day Core Itinerary we've designed for you--from Lisbon, Portugal to San Sebastián, Spain. Among many highlights will be our full-day visiting Santiago de Compostelo. And along the way, we'll have the opportunity to meet European Young Life staff, volunteer leaders and local teenagers. As always, you have customizable options pre and post-cruise. Why not consider adding on the One-Day Early Arrival Portuguese Riviera Tour? Or, if time and wallet allow, the Optional Four-Day Biarritz/Bordeaux Extension? Or design your own independent extensions in Madrid, Barcelona, or Paris. First though, before you think through early arrival and extension options, let's get a shipboard stateroom reserved for you before they are all spoken for! We only have room for 42 couples and a few singles. The smart move is to call us today at (919) 381-5722 for the widest selection of cabin categories. Whether this is your first or umpteenth trip with F IRST CENTURY VOYAGES, we can't wait to welcome you aboard. Personally, this voyage celebrates my 50 years of involvement with Young Life. As a high school sophomore, I was invited to my first Young Life club. The following summer in Tin Cup Cabin at Silver Cliff Ranch, I was doing the inviting-"Come, Lord, help me follow you." A half century later, life's still an amazing adventure of faith. Hoping you'll come along,

David A. Spence, Founder FIRST CENTURY VOYAGES

Lisbon Exploration Monument

F r i d ay, M ay 2 2 L i s b o n and Embarkation This morning we board our luxury motorcoaches for a halfday tour of Lisbon — a city pleasantly situated atop seven hills along the last stretch of the Tagus River as it broadens to meet the Atlantic. Some of the greatest explorations the world has ever known began from this city’s docks when, in the 16th century, Portuguese sailors like Vasco de Gama ventured to the furthest corners of the earth. Stifled under dictatorial rule for the better part of the 20th century, Lisbon is now quietly emerging as one of Europe’s most desirable cities, with a Euro-based economy, pleasant weather, friendly people, and a rich culture. Lunch is on your own today at your choice of the waterside restaurants (every cuisine imaginable) along the Santo Amaro docks. All have outdoor tables with great views of the 25 April Bridge, the Monument of Christ, and the yacht marina. The Sea Cloud II is anchored not far away. Just after 3:00 p.m., the Captain and his Sea Cloud II crew greet us at the gangway with a warm “Welcome” and chilled champagne. Isn’t it nice to unpack only once for the next seven days? At four o'clock sharp, lines are loosed, the gangway secured, and we're underway! The world's most luxurious sailing yacht heads into the open Atlantic. 4

S at u r d ay, M ay 2 3 OPorto, Portugal With no port calls scheduled this morning, we have time to relax and visit with old and new friends. Rest assured, Sea Cloud II’s breakfast buffet will satisfy every taste and fancy. After breakfast, we make our way up to the Lido Deck where one of the ship’s officers will explain sail maneuvers to any of us unfamiliar with the nearly bygone ways of tall-ship sailing. If winds are in our favor, experienced crewmembers will set 3,000 square yards of canvas above our heads. With masts nineteen stories tall, fair winds are all the power our ship needs to speed us along to our afternoon port call. After tying up at the pier in the port of Leixoes, we spend the afternoon touring Portugal’s second largest city, Oporto, splendidly situated along the Douro River at its junction with the Atlantic. First is a visit to the Neoclassical Palacio da Borsa, which, two centuries ago, was the stock exchange. Built to impress (and thereby inspire investment!) the most famous room is the Salão Arabe or Arab Chamber, where still today the city "shows off" at official receptions. Oporto is known the world over for its famous port wine, produced locally and aged in great cellars along the waterfront just across the river from the city's Old Town. Most famous of these cellars is Graham’s, where a private tour has been arranged for us. We think you’ll enjoy the interesting Portuguese cheese that David Spence has selected to accompany our port sampling! Tonight we gather on the Lido deck for the Captain’s Welcome Reception, followed by a Gala Dinner in the restaurant one deck below. Oporto

Islas Cíes...the prettiest beach you've never heard

Sunday, May 24 Islas CÍes, Spain A second leisurely morning at sea, then we're off to the beach! Mention Spanish beaches and most people think of the Mediterranean. Yet the wilder, stunning Atlantic coastline of Galicia just north of Portugal has far more dramatic praias – with far fewer people on them! The crown jewel of the beaches along this coast is actually on the nearby island group, Las Islas Cies.

Depending on the weather, this may be the perfect evening for an al fresco barbeque on the Lido deck. The ship’s uber-talented galley team specializes in “choice anxiety.” Expect a selection of grilled meats and fish... and maybe even a fresh-from-the-ocean swordfish! 6

Santiago Cathedral

Once a pirates’ haunt, Cíes is now a pristine, uninhabited national park, open to the public only in the summer. Mainlanders come over to the islands by small boats or a ferry. Our arrival on the Sea Cloud II will be a bit more dramatic — perhaps the local event-of-the-season! Spend a couple of lazy hours on the Praia das Rodas, a perfect crescent of soft, pale sand backed by dunes sheltering a calm lagoon in a crystal-clear sea. This is one of the reasons we so love the Sea Cloud II — anchorages in interesting places where the mega-cruiseliners are forbidden. We've arranged four naturalist guides to insure that we find the best hiking trails for flora, fauna and dramatic Atlantic vistas.

Monday, May 25 Santiago de Compostela, Spain In medieval Europe three routes were considered the greatest spiritual “penance pilgrimages" for the truly devout — a pilgrimage to Rome, a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, and a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. According to legend, the remains of St. James the Apostle were brought to this Galician city. Thus pilgrims throughout the Continent trekked along the Camino de Santiago for a visit to the great rococo cathedral. Over hundreds of years, tourism has never let up. This is an experience you won’t forget...especially when six strong men begin swinging a giant botafumeiro (incense burner) suspended from the cathedral's ceiling! Smoke and sparks fill the transept. Today, over 100,000 pilgrims still visit Santiago de Compostela each year. To obtain an official Compostela (certificate of achievement), pilgrims must either walk a minimum of 100 kilometers or bicycle 200 kilometers, overnighting in designated towns and hostels along the way. Arriving via the Sea Cloud II probably doesn’t qualify for this merit badge of piety! The city itself has been amazingly well-preserved, starting with the huge square at the city center, Plaza del Obradorio. Along the plaza is the well-known Hostal de Los Reyes Católicos, a former hospital turned luxury hotel, where we (like guests and pilgrims for the last 500 years!) will take a touring break for a lunch of Galician foods and the delicate but lively regional Albarino wines. Though we disembarked this morning in the tiny port of Finisterre ("the end of the earth" and the traditional end of the camino walk), while we've been touring all day the Sea Cloud II has repositioned 80 nautical miles to pick us up this evening in La Coruña. 7

Niemeyer Cultural Center

Tuesday, May 26 avilés · OVIEDO Three titans of modern architecture were dominating worldwide headlines as Europe entered the 21st century--Canadian Frank Gehry, Brazilian Oscar Niemeyer, and Spain's Santiago Calatrava. Our port calls today and tomorrow afford the opportunity to see iconic examples of their best work. A late-morning Seamen's Brunch on the Lido allows for perfect perches as our yacht cruises into the inland harbor of Avilés. The pier where Sea Cloud II will tie up at noon runs right alongside Niemeyer's International Cultural Center. Old dogs do have new tricks. Niemeyer designed the complex in his mid-90's...then lived another decade! Because the region of Asturias in northwest Spain is so rich in history, nature, and gastronomy, we've arranged three different options for today's touring. You may choose a scenic 90-minute nature walk, led by avuncular Austurian naturalist, Diego Martin Cortes. Or, because our visit to Asturias coincides with a major local festival, option two is to mingle with Martes de Campo revelers in the region's capital city, Oviedo. Most Oviedo stores will be closed for this holiday so our shoppers can elect option three--exploring the quaint old town of Avilés, just a short footbridge away from Sea Cloud II’s mooring. 8

Guggenheim Museum

No matter the option you choose, we'll make sure you taste the local sidra (the fermented apple cider poured from bottles held at least 40 inches above the glasses). Asturia boasts 56 cheeses crafted in the region. We will sample some of those, too.

W e d n e s d ay, M ay 2 7 Bilbao, Spain Having traversed a good part of the Atlantic's Bay of Biscay, we arrive at the port of Gexto for our visit to the world-famous Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. Designed by architect Frank O. Gehry and opened to the public in 1997, the striking facade of the Guggenheim makes this dramatic structure a destination unto itself. 35,000 titanium tiles catch the sun’s rays and produce a dazzling waterfront reflection. Yet up close, the museum blends quite well into the surrounding Bilbao architecture. A few exhibits are permanent. But each season, the works of different artists are featured. As usual, FIRST CENTURY VOYAGES will have the best-of-the-best guides to lead us on a late afternoon visit through the galleries. Tonight, the Captain invites us to the Lido for champagne and caviar canapes followed by a gala Farewell Dinner one deck below. As you might expect, Sea Cloud II’s four chefs and dedicated baker pull out all the stops! 9

San Sebastián

Thursday, May 28 . disembarkation s a n s e b a s t i á n , S PA I N After breakfast, we bid a fond but sad farewell to the Sea Cloud II and her accommodate-every-wish crew. Waiting motorcoaches transfer us fifty minutes west of the Gexto port to Spain's most beautiful coastal city, San Sebastián. Around most of the nearly circular bay is a wide crescent-shaped beach. European Young Life friends will meet us for a late morning "club" at the Maria Cristina Hotel. San Sebastián food impresario Jon Warren, a long-time friend of David Spence, welcomes us to his Gourmet Shop for local product tasting. Jon and his team have sourced more than 150 artisanal delicacies (seafood, conserves, jamón, salts, oils, vinegars and sweets) from all across the Basque Country. Appetites whetted, it's time for a guided meander through the Parte Vieja. Our Basque guides have the "inside knowledge"...knowing all the best spots where the freshest and most exciting Pintxos (Basque tapas) are found. Eat and drink as much as you like. It's all included!

LAND EXCURSIONS POST-CRUISE EXTENSION POSSIBLE CONNECTING AIRPORTS

After all, you're in Europe's hottest new foodie mecca. In Spain, cider, beer, or local white and red wines accompany everything. Afternoon check-in is back at the city's premier hotel, the Maria Cristina. (Biarritz and Bordeaux extenders will transfer instead to the sybaritic Iriarte Juaregia Hotel in the hills surrounding the city.) Dinner tonight is on-your-own.

F r i d ay, M ay 2 9 Flights Home Flights homebound from the handy San Sebastián Airport (EAS) typically involve connections through Madrid (MAD) or Barcelona (BCN). Other options are flights out of Biarritz or Bilbao airports (BIQ or BIO), a 40 or 50-minute taxi ride, respectively, from our hotel. 11

Biarritz & Bordeaux Extension

Iriarte Juaregia Hotel

12

THURSday, May 28 - monday, June 1 Can you make room on your calendar to join us for extra days of touring in Biarritz, St. Jean de Luz, and Bordeaux, France? We only have room for fourteen couples and three singles, so let us know as soon as possible if you'd like to add on this extension package. After the pintxo tour in San Sebastián, extenders will head up into the bucolic Basque hills to one of our favorite hotels in all of Europe. The Iriarte Juaregia is a 17th century palace converted in the 21st century to a luxury antique-filled hotel. On an inspection trip this March, David Spence was delighted to discover that the nineteenbedroom palace had recently added a gastronomic restaurant. David and brilliant young chef Jaime Gomez Puche have planned an exquisite tasting menu for the dinner which begins our gourmet extension package. On Friday, we cross the nearby French border for a leisurely afternoon exploring the quaint seaside resort, St. Jean de Luz.

Biarritz

Hotel du Palais Imperial Spa

It's an easily walkable town. Many residences date back to the 17th and 18th centuries. Local history is fascinating. Our guide will recount what brave St. Jean de Luz fishermen did as the Nazis were occupying France in 1940. We think you'll find this town a charming lunch and shopping stop on our way to Biarritz. Late afternoon check-in at Biarritz's oceanfront legend, the Hotel du Palais. Originally built in 1856 as the Imperial Residence for Empress Eugénie, Napoleon III's wife, this hotel is a five-star gem. Its headland positioning on the Atlantic is dramatic. We won't be leaving for Bordeaux until Saturday afternoon, so you'll have plenty of time for the shops, beach and boardwalk, exploring the chic shops, or enjoying the Imperial Spa. This is French panache on steroids. The name says it all - Napoleon and Eugénie would approve. On Saturday and Sunday nights May 30th and 31st, our base will be the Grand Hotel in the center of Bordeaux. The hottest interior decorator in France these days is Jacques Garcia. You might have read about his 300-million-dollar renovation and redecoration of La Mamounia Hotel in Marrakech. Well, the Grand is another of his great decorating triumphs. The Grand Hotel Bordeaux

13

On our arrival afternoon, chocoholics might enjoy a visit with master chocolatier Thierry Lalet at his Maison, the Saunion Chocolaterie. Vino lovers will appreciate insider tips from the Bordeaux wine expert who will be our guide, Dewey Markham, Jr. Cheese aficionados might want to stop by the worldfamous fromagerie and underground aromatic cellars of affineur Jean d’Alos for sampling the renowned cheeses of France and adjoining countries. On Sunday, we will have a full day of touring and wine tasting in the Pauillac region, with visits to both Lynch-Bages and the Lafite Rothschild Estate and cellars. Over lunch we hope to be joined by convivial Jean-Michel Cazes, possibly the most respected entrepreneur in French wine making. The chef at his Michelin-starred CordeillanBages will dazzle us with his inventive creations. We were impressed on our inspection that there was not only a wide assortment of unique breads, but also a choice of four different butters! We return to Bordeaux late in the afternoon. Guests will be on their own for dinner, but after our spectacular lunch, you’ll probably just want some light bistro fare and a good night's rest to prepare for your journey home tomorrow. On the other hand, why miss Michelinstarred Le Chapon Fin? There is also a fabulous restaurant right in our hotel, Le Pressoir D’Argent, named for a magnificent silver lobster-press contraption trolleyed around the dining room for tableside theatrics! The extension officially ends with breakfast at the Grand before heading to the Bordeaux airport (code BOD) on Monday. But Dewey Markham will be available for guiding anyone who would want to stay another day and explore other wine estates in the Bordeaux region. Chateâu Lafite Rothschild

LEADING US ON THE JOURNEY

Denny & Marilyn

RYDBERG

Denny Rydberg took office as Young Life’s fifth president in July of 1993. He was the first Young Life president to come from outside the organization. Now ending his 21st year, the only president to serve longer was the founder, Jim Rayburn. Effective CEOs are usually gifted and compelling vision casters. Denny has been this kind of leader. Young Life's outreach has grown dramatically over the past two decades. In 2009 Young Life launched the Reaching a World of Kids Campaign, with the goal of doubling the mission’s impact from one to two million kids a year. As part of this campaign, Denny is leading the mission to sustain and start new ministries in 8,000 locations worldwide, mobilize more than 80,000 leaders (staff, volunteers and committee), and increase camp capacity by upgrading existing facilities while developing new facilities both in the US and overseas. In 2014, Young Life is impacting well over one and a half million middle school, high school and college-age kids, in more than 100 countries around the world. Before joining Young Life, Denny served as Director of University Ministries at University Presbyterian Church in Seattle, Washington. He has also ministered on church staffs in Tacoma and San Diego. In addition, Denny has served as the vice president of Youth Specialties, director of operations for Inspirational Films, the editor of an evangelical must-read in the '70s, The Wittenburg Door. He is the author of 10 books. Denny has ministered as chaplain for the University of Washington basketball team and the Seattle Supersonics. Denny and his wife, Marilyn, have also been involved in the Women’s Professional Golf Fellowship – a ministry to women golfers on the LPGA tour. Denny graduated from Seattle Pacific University in 1967. In 2000, he was named the Alumnus of the Year. He also attended graduate school at Western Washington University. Denny and Marilyn have four children and five grandchildren. 15

One-Day optional early Arrival Tour

CaScais & the Estoril Region No need to shortchange your experience of Portugal-especially if this is your first trip to Lisbon. Early arrivals are welcome. Our five-star hotel, the Lapa Palace has agreed to offer their special group rates for up to three nights in advance of the Sea Cloud Core Itinerary check-ins on May 21st. If you'll be angling for frequent flyer award seats, this also adds flexibility to your travel date options. Just let the FIRST CENTURY office know if you'd prefer to arrive in Lisbon on the 20th, the 19th or even the 18th. With extra time, you'll have your pick of half a dozen UNESCO-designated World Heritage Sites like the 16th century Belem Tower or the Jeronimos Monastery (where the explorer Vasco de Gama is buried). Or see what gold found in Brazil funded--the world's most expensive chapel! Whether you prefer Rembrandt and Rubens or Picasso, Dali and Warhol, Lisbon's top three museums can fill an afternoon. In the evening, jazz enthusiasts may want to check out soulful Fado, arguably the oldest urban folk music in the world. For early arrivals, we have also arranged an optional full-day tour to Sintra and the Portuguese Riviera on Thursday, May 21st. The hustle and bustle of the capital city, Lisbon, fades away as we drive toward the westernmost point of Europe to visit the picturesque coastal village of Cascais and the history-filled ecologically-rich Estoril region. En route, we also tour the whimsical Pena Palace at the top of Sintra Mountain, the "country escape" for past kings and queens. By early evening, we will be back at the Lapa to join our newly-arrived Core Itinerary traveling companions at a Welcome Reception. 17
