The Cape Verde Islands

Santa Mónica Beach Resort & Spa

Cape Verde – The Caribbean for Europeans The low season? Well, there isn’t one. Perhaps its biggest advantage over other tropical destinations is that Cape Verde does not suffer from a rainy season. Temperatures averaging 26˚C, long hours of sunshine and consistently warm, swimmable seas, bless the islands with an ideal all-year-round holiday climate. This, in turn, leads to exceptionally high occupancy rates and strong rental yields that are difficult to match anywhere else in the world.

Scattered just 450km off the coast of West Africa, the Cape Verde archipelago shares the same latitude as Barbados, making it a sun-soaked utopia throughout the year. Paradise is closer than you might think. Stepping on a plane in London, visitors bound for Boa Vista can find themselves walking barefoot on one of the world’s finest beaches at Santa Mónica less than 6 hours later. This, along with miles upon miles of dazzling white sand beaches, is why Cape Verde is known to some as ‘The Caribbean for Europeans’.

Boa Vista – Cape Verde

When Portuguese mariners first settled on the Cape Verde islands in the 15th century, they became the founders of a vibrant and diverse culture that persists to this day. A colourful blend of European, African and Latin American influences, Cape Verdeans remain very proud of their heritage and it shows in their passion for music, dance and island cuisine (try the cachupa rica – a hearty slow-cooked stew, the amazing fresh carpacio of tuna and swordfish or the huge lobster, all caught locally that day). Until recently, Cape Verde’s unrivalled beauty has remained largely unknown to the outside world. But with the charm of its colonial towns and spectacular natural landscapes, the islands couldn’t stay a secret for ever. A rapidly growing number of tourists and investors are heading to the islands to make the most of Cape Verde’s promise.

For those who come to Boa Vista, the island is renowned for having the best beaches in the region, with Santa Mónica ranked among the best in the world. A well-known location for scientific study, Boa Vista is an important habitat for nesting turtles, breeding humpback whales and migrating bird species. Much of the island is set aside as a protected nature reserve guaranteeing over-development will never occur in this paradise. Northeasterly trade winds attract championship kite and windsurfers, as well as traditional board surfers. Scuba divers can discover a kaleidoscope world of marine life and ancient shipwrecks. There’s also sailing and big game sea fishing, hiking and horse riding. While at Santa Mónica Beach Resort & Spa, the temptation will also be great simply to stay and enjoy the five-star resort facilities and beautiful beach.

The interiors

Each living space has a clean, fresh finish with elegant use of local materials. To create a natural ‘inside-out’ lifestyle, extensive use has been made of large window openings. These are positioned to provide natural cooling ventilation making full use of the natural winds on the island, providing a balanced air flow throughout each property, minimising the need to use mechanical cooling systems. Contemporary, designer furnishing packs are available to make the most of the modern interior spaces.

In keeping with the theme, the spacious bathrooms maintain strong geometric lines throughout with a bright and natural finish. Kitchens are complete with stonework surfaces and high quality, contemporary equipment. Extensive use has been made of large format, designer floor tiles throughout the residences. A Mediterranean garden feel is enhanced by the use of local stone within the villas. The gardens themselves have been designed to provide an all year round outdoor living space.

Rapidly increasing tourism, growing demand for high-quality residences, exceptionally high occupancy rates and a developing tourism infrastructure set Boa Vista amongst the world’s hottest investment environments.

02 28 —04 —29

The investment

Huge tourism growth potential Cape Verde has remained an unexplored secret to tourists and international property investors alike, until recently. As Europe’s closest tropical island paradise, rich in colonial history, natural beauty and ecological wonders, Cape Verde is rapidly attracting increasing numbers of tourists from Europe, the Americas and beyond. Heavy investment in infrastructure improvements has placed Boa Vista at the forefront of this global appeal. Cape Verde is an early stage property investment market with all the boxes ticked for lucrative capital growth.

Strong and growing economy GDP growth for Cape Verde has held up well and is expected to rise further to 7.1% annual growth by 2013, according to the IMF, who also praised the ‘prudent management and strong economic foundations’ provided by the Cape Verdean government. Cape Verde welcomes foreign direct investment to create a sustainable, growing economy through job creation and capital investment. The local currency is also fixed to the Euro. With robust property laws and a democratic system providing the same laws for locals and foreign nationals, Cape Verde offers investors an enviable opportunity to purchase top-quality property in a prime location now, while prices remain low.

Exceptionally high yields A twelve-month holiday season and glorious climate ensure continually high occupancy rates and, therefore, exceptionally high yields for investors. Thanks to Boa Vista’s year-round holiday climate, occupancy rates are very high, as shown with the highly successful Riu Karamboa and proven by recent government research showing Boa Vista resorts operating at 90% occupancy levels. Boa Vista appeals to a huge range of tourists, attracting wildlife conservation, water sports, scuba diving and game fishing enthusiasts as well as couples and families of all ages simply looking to enjoy unspoilt beaches and the all year round tropical sun.
