RYS 300 A Resource for RYS 200 & 500s Converting to RYS 200 and RYS 300

Introducing the RYS 300 With the launch of our new website this November, your RYS will no longer be called a RYS 200 & 500. Your school will now hold two separate designations: RYS 200 and RYS 300. A RYS 300 (which must also hold a RYS 200) offers two separate segments of training, permitting trainees to receive certificates after the first 200 hours and again after the 300 hours of advanced training. (Trainees who complete both RYS 200 and RYS 300 programs can register as a RYT 500). By contrast, a RYS 500 offers 500 hours of training without permitting trainees to receive a certificate until they complete the full 500-hour training. RYS 300 programs may also allow trainees from another school to transfer. You can reference the chart in Appendix A for a detailed description of each RYS designation. Why the Change? For a lonf thme, we’ve been confushnf teacher trainees and trainers alike with the nomenclature of “RYS 200 & 500.” Tgese deshfnathons hndhcated wgat level of RYT a teacger would recehve after graduating from these programs, but obscured the type and length of program the school actually offered. In addition, our standards for the 300-hour advanced training didn't add up: A 300-hour advanced training was not equivalent to the difference between the 200-hour standards and 500-hour standards. We have eliminated the differences, so the new 300-hour standards will simply be the difference between the 200-hour and 500-hour standards. You can compare the new 300-hour standards against the old 300-hour standards in the chart (Appendix B). You will want to follow the new 300-hour standards (Appendix C) when preparing your syllabus. The new standards actually offer much more flexibility, with a wider range of elective hours, than the old ones. Transition Timeline and Tools (November) We’ll keep you hn tge loop whtg tge prechse date, but tghs transition will take place when we move to our new website this November. Below are some key aspects of the transition: • All RYS 200 & 500s will convert to RYS 200 and RYS 300 at website launch, indicating the two types of registered programs offered. • New registry marks will be available in November and you will be issued a new certificate in 2014. • Start preparing your syllabus for the new requirements now. You will want to have your syllabi entered in the new website before your first training finishes in 2014, as your trahnees won’t be able to refhster unthl ht hs submhtted. Vhew a sample syllabus (Appendix E) and then complete the syllabus worksheet with your program information, which can be found our website, www.yogaalliance.org. • Plan for changes to your marketing materials and certificates. Appendix C:

300-Hour Advanced Standards (NEW) These new 300-Hour Advanced Standards will take effect in November, to eliminate confusion and inconsistency with how teachers earn a RYT 500. The 300-hour advanced standards are for Registered Yoga Schools that hold or wish to hold the RYS 300 designation. The 300-hour standards are advanced standards of study; therefore a RYS may not offer only a 300-hour advanced program without providing the foundational 200hour program as well. This foundational 200-hour program must be registered with Yoga Alliance before the school can apply for the RYS 300 designation. A distinction between a RYS 200, RYS 300 and a RYS 500 is that a RYS 500 offers 500 hours of training without permitting trainees to receive a certificate until they complete the full 500-hour training. A RYS 300 (which also holds a RYS 200) offers two segments of training, permitting trainees to receive certificates after the first 200 hours and after the 300 hours of advanced training. RYS 300 programs may also allow trainees to transfer from other foundational 200hour programs at different schools. Trainees that complete both RYS 200 and RYS 300 programs can become a RYT 500. A Registered Yoga School with an advanced 300-hour program (RYS 200 & 500) must incorporate training hours in the following educational categories for the 300-hour training:

Appendix E:

Syllabus – A Sample As part of tge Next Generathon of Yofa Allhance, we’re addhnf rhfor to our credenthalhnf system. RYSs will need to provide a syllabus for their program(s) with the new system. What we mean by “syllabus” hs a descrhpthon of tge profram content, hncludhnf thtles of tge sesshons/tophcs, descriptions of the materials and information covered, and learning objectives. While titles and descriptions for each session are required, learning objectives are not (at least not initially). That said, we encourage you to develop learning objectives for your overall program, as well as for the session/topic level. The overall program objectives will be included in the evaluation your trainee fills out when registering with Yoga Alliance. Plan ahead, you will need to enter your syllabus before your first 2014 class finishes to ensure your trainees are able to register with us. Topics or sessions up to five hours in length should include at least one to two sentences of description. For topics or sessions more than five hours in length, we request one to two short paragraphs. Here are some examples of sessions/topics within each educational category:

The 5 Categories of Asana Description:  Action, Counteraction and Risks: Students will practice and learn the principle actions of each asana within the aforementioned categories. This will provide students with a deep understanding of pratikriya (counteraction) and risks for each pose in each category with hands on intensive work on how to reduce risk. Students will practice and master the integration of action/counteraction and begin developing language to convey these concepts in their teaching.  Maps of Alignment: Students will achieve comprehension of the alignment maps for each of the 5 categories of asanas through observation and experience of how the poses in each category share a common foundation, and how to build upon this foundation in each of the asana categories.  Students will learn how to work with dynamic movement to minimize risk and reduce vulnerability. Through their practice and analysis, students will be able to outline points of vulnerability in each asana and how to prevent and adjust for them when teaching.
