During the last decade, Moscow has changed greatly, rapidly regaining its old glory and a new dynamism. Beautiful old buildings have been restored, new metro stations opened, and a large number of first class hotels have appeared. Boutiques, department stores and supermarkets have popped up like mushrooms in recent years. Dozens of theatres, galleries and cafes enliven the cultural scene. It is now a very fashionable city, with many millionaires. Moscow is the capital city as well as the financial and political Centre of Russia and the former Soviet Union. Its population of approximately 13 million people makes it the most populous city in Europe. Although the improved economy and modern era have brought a variety of construction projects like the Moscow

Monorail and new architecture, the city retains the spirit of old Russia, with a downtown area dotted with majestic buildings of a faintly Islamic character. The Moskva River bends its way through the city and most of the main attractions are situated on the northern bank. Near Red Square is the 19th century GUM store, with its spectacular atrium, the place for a great coffee. Built between 1890 and 1893, the GUM building features an interesting combination of Russian medieval ecclesiastical architecture with an elegant steel framework and glass roof reminiscent of the great turn-of-the century train stations of Paris and London. As the largest shop in Moscow, it was built to replace the old hall of the Upper Trading Rows, which existed earlier on the same site. After the 1917 Revolution, it was nationalized and renamed GUM. This evening, our Travel Masters Escort will take you for a short orientation walk to see Red Square, and all its beautiful lights and evening atmosphere of activity. Accommodation: 5 star, St. Regis Nikolskaya Meals Included: Breakfast / Inflight

Day 15: Wed 19 July - Moscow

Today it is enclosed by high walls, 2 ½ km long with 20 distinctive towers. The Savior Gate towers over the Kremlin’s exit onto Red Square and is Moscow’s Big Ben. Inside these spectacular grounds we will visit the wonderful white stone monuments of the 15th century, including the Ivan the Great Bell Tower, a Moscow landmark visible from 30kms away. Beside the Bell Tower stands the world’s largest Bell that weighs 202 tonnes, and the huge Tsar’s cannon. From medieval citadel to modern power centre,

Moscow’s Kremlin has played a dominant role in Russia for over 800 years. Strikingly majestic and picturesque, it is the chief architectural wonder of the city with its mighty walls, ridge-roofed towers and electric mix of architecture that reflects both the paradoxes and the cultural shifts of the country. The Kremlin remains as alluring and enigmatic as ever, a mixture of lavish opulence and austere secrecy. Two thirds of the citadel is closed to visitors, but the remaining third contains enough treasures to occupy several days of sightseeing with not only one of the largest and most interesting museums in the world, but also the official residence of the President of the Russian Federation. We see its lavish government (formerly the Czar’s) palaces and splendid cathedrals and a special inside visit of the outstanding Diamond Fund and Armory Museum. This amazing canal was built in less than 5 years, and features 8 hydro power stations, 11 huge locks, 19 bridges, 2 tunnels and lots of other structures. The canal supplies Moscow with Volga water, which is purified at five pumping stations. You will observe the local Russian people enjoying the river, swimming, fishing and sunbathing as we cruise slowly past. Tonight there is the Captain’s welcome reception. Accommodation: Volga Dream Meals Included: All meals, and welcome reception. Wine/Beer with Lunch/Dinner

Day 18: Sat 22 July Uglich

During the day, we cruise past the lonely belfy of Kalyazin, which rises above the mirror like surface of the river. It once belonged to the church of the Trinity, which was built in 1654 and held the sepulcher of the monk Makarill Kalyazin Skyi. The belfry is now a tourist curiosity because when the canal was dug and the valley flooded for the reservoir, the tower remained above the waterline.

After cruising through forested countryside, we arrive into the ancient trading town of Uglich, one of the spokes of Russia’s renowned Golden Ring. Uglich dates back to the 10th century. The approach to Uglich is one of the most memorable sights along the Volga River. Founded in 1148, Uglich flourished during the 13th and 14th centuries and was favoured in the 16th century by Ivan the Terrible who used it as a base for his campaigns. Infamous for being the site of the mysterious death of Ivan the Terrible’s son Dimitry, the town now hosts a commemorative church - Church of St Dimitry on the Blood - on the site where the body of the young Prince was found. It is small in size and the coloured tiles on the facades emphasize its characteristic decorative style. The frescoes inside give a full account of the events connected with the death of Prince Dimitry in 1591. Our walk through this town is a delight. Among the many magnificent architectural monuments we will see, are the Kremlin, the Palace o f Czarevich Dimitry and the Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Savior. We attend an enchanting concert of choral music. We then continue our journey along the mighty Volga River. Tonight you might like to watch a documentary film, “Construction of the Moscow Canal” in the lounge on board Volga Dream. Accommodation: Volga Dream Meals: All meals Included: Wine/Beer with Lunch/Dinner

Day 19: Sun 23 July Yaroslavl

We arrive into Yaroslavl, a world heritage site, one of Russia’s most beautiful cities and the oldest on the Volga River, and the Volga’s first port. Stretching for 30kms on both banks of the Volga, Yaroslavl developed into a major commercial centre, beginning in the 11th century. It is renowned for its numerous 17th century churches and stands as a premier example of the urban planning reform that Catherine the Great ordered for the whole of Russia. The town was renovated in the neoclassical style on a radial urban master

plan yet kept some of its significant historic structures like the Psassky Monastery that dates from the 12th century, an elegant rotunda and the remnants of the ancient trading centre. The entire centre is a World Heritage Site. Our sightseeing tour includes the Monastery of the Epiphany with its precious frescoes, and other buildings, which rank among the world’s greatest architecture. We will have a reception at the Governor’s house with a beautiful display of dancing in the main ballroom. This evening, we have a Russian Tea Ceremony and a Russian Cooking class on board ship. Accommodation: Volga Dream Included: All meals Wine/Beer with Lunch/Dinner

Day 20 - Mon 24 July - Goritsy

Our cruising today, takes us to White Lake, or Beloye, and is one of the ten biggest natural lakes in Europe, and has often been mentioned in Russian history, first because of a settlement on its banks in the 8th century. Since then it has served as a point of trade, linking the north and south of Russia. During the 17th century the lake, renowned for its abundant source of fish, became known as the Czar’s fishing grounds. During the 19th century, White Lake became part of the Mariinsk Waterway and later, the Volga-Baltic Waterway. White Lake is in an area of the country known as the Vologda Oblast, and the town of Belozersk, one of the oldest towns in Russia, lies on its banks. The relative desolation of the Vologda lands in early times attracted monks looking for solitude and resulted in a huge number of monasteries. We visit the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery. Founded in 1397, and now home to one of the best collections of Russian icons in the world. The Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery, the Spaso-Prilutsky Monastery, the Goritzy Monastery and the Troitse-Glendensky Monastery represent examples of Russian medieval fortification architecture and contain buildings rated among the best preserved cultural heritage

sites. This evening on board ship, we have a Russian Dinner and Vodka Tasting event.

Day 21 - Tue 25 July - Kizhi Island & Lake Onega

We spend the morning cruising through breathtaking scenery before arriving on Kizhi Island, an enchanting place and one of the highlights of our waterway journey. The island of Kizhi lies near the centre of Lake Onega and is three and a half miles long and a half mile wide. Settlements and churches on the island were known from at least the 15th century. In the 18th century, two major churches and a bell tower were built. Most villages had disappeared by the 1950s, Dozens of wooden buildings moved to the island from various parts of Kareilia for preservation purposes. While today, only a small rural settlement remains, the entire island forms a national open-air museum with more than 80 historical wooden structures, the most famous of which is the Kizhi Pogost. In 1990, it was included on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage sites, and in 1993 it became a Russian Cultural Heritage site. The island is home to the oldest wooden church in Russia, the Church of the Resurrection of Lazarus, built in the late 14th century. Kizhi is renowned for its open-air museum, fascinating edifices of wooden architecture including the remarkable Transfiguration Cathedral, built in 1714. Thirty thousand shingles on twenty-two cupolas are breathtakingly beautiful. The shingles are made of aspen wood, which resists weather well, and reflects a myriad of colours in the bright sunshine. The collection of other remarkable structures includes farmhouses, churches, chapels and bathhouses – all brought from around the Lake Onega region to collectively illustrate the styles of architecture common to the Russian north. Restored to provide an authentic glimpse of the past, Kizhi is a feast

for the eyes and the camera. This evening on board, you can attend a Piano Concert, with pieces by Tchaikovsky and Rakhmaninov. Accommodation: Volga Dream Included: All meals Wine/Beer with Lunch/Dinner

Day 22 - Wed 26 July Svir River and village of Mandrogi

While cruising along the 215 km long Svir River, we can appreciate the quiet understated beauty of a region that has long inspired artists and poets. The ship passes quaint riverside hamlets before reaching Lake Ladoga. , Europe’s largest lake. The scenic Svir River, connects Lake Ladoga with Lake Onega. Beautiful Lake Ladoga includes more than 650 islands, and is famous for clarity and freshness. More than 30 rivers flow into the lake, but only the Neva River flows out. It is particularly rich in fish, Baltic Sturgeon, Baltic salmon and trout. We explore Mandrogi, a quaint riverside village and wander ashore for a close look at this typical rural settlement. The local handicraft markets are hard to resist. The landscape is rugged and majestic. First settlements appeared along the river some 5000 years ago, and the lumber industry has always been important. Huge timber rafts drift past on the river, and log piles can be seen all along the riverbanks. We cruise along the Svir River and through Lake Onega, the second largest lake in Europe, and one of the world’s purest. The lake contains over 1300 islands, mainly in the north where forests of pine and elm trees are common. The scenery today is spectacular. Accommodation: Volga Dream Meals Included: All meals, with BBQ on open deck. Included: All meals Wine/Beer with Lunch/Dinner

Day 23 - Thur 27 July St Petersburg

The Volga Dream is due to arrive into St Petersburg at approximately 9am this morning. Following our arrival, we will disembark and commence our sightseeing programme of St Petersburg.

Peter the Great founded his famous city on swampland in 1703. Canals were dug to drain the marshy south bank, and in 1712, he named it his capital and forced administrators, nobles and merchants to build new homes there. Architects and artisans came from all over Europe and transformed the swamp into a modern city of baroque and neoclassical architecture with a decidedly European flair, one often described as the most western and most beautiful city in Russia. Virtually unharmed by the period of Stalinist reconstruction of 1930 to 1950 the downtown area is crowded with majestic palaces, impressive historical monuments, tree-lined avenues and stunning bridges. St Petersburg has always been a city of ideas. Its residents incited the Russian Revolution, ushering in 70 years of communist rule, and then also encouraged democracy when the tides had changed. The city is now bursting with creativity. It is Russia’s second largest city after Moscow with almost five million inhabitants. It is one of Europe’s major cultural centres and an important Russian port on the Baltic Sea. Today, we have a city tour which includes Split of Basil Island (walking tour), Spilled Blood Church, Peter and Paul Fortress and St Isaac Cathedral. The Peter and Paul Fortress is the original citadel of St Petersburg. It is also the oldest building and therefore birthplace of the city. The fortress, the brainchild of Peter the Great, was built in the beginning of 1706 as a defence against the Swedes, but Peter defeated them before it was finished. Its main use up to 1917 was a a political prison.Famous residents of the prison include Dostoevsky, Gorky, Trotsky and Lenin’s older brother, Alexander. St Isaac’s Cathedral is another stunning building to admire. We drive along Nevsky Prospect to see famous landmarks

including the monumental St Isaac’s Cathedral, and explore Palace Square and the Admiralty, the historic heart of St Petersburg. Accommodation: Grand Hotel Europe Meals Included: Breakfast/Lunch

Day 24 - Fri 28 July St Petersburg

We have early entrance to the famed Hermitage Museum before hours, to avoid the heavy crowds that this famous Museum attracts. Our guided tour takes us through the world famous Hermitage Museum. Situated in the centre of St Petersburg, the State Hermitage Museum is the largest art gallery in the country, and among the largest and most respected art museums in the world. Its five magnificent buildings, arranged side by side along the embankment of the Neva River, were created by celebrated architects of the 18th and 19th centuries. Its main building, the Winter Palace built between 1754 and 1762 after a design by Bartolomjmeo Rastrelli, was formerly the residence of the Russian Czar5s. The Museum was founded in 1764 when Catherine the Great purchased 255 paintings from the city of Berlin. Since then, the Hermitage has collected almost three million works of arts and artefacts from all over the world from the Stone Age to the present. They include works by Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Rembrandt, Rubens, Renoir, Cezanne, Manet, Monet, Pissarro, Van Gogh and many others. The collection is both enormous and diverse. Experts say that if you were to spend a minute looking at each item on display, you would need 11 years to see them all. After lunch, we travel out of town to the meticulously restored Peterhof, St Petersburg’s most famous and

spectacular Imperial estate, often cited as the Versailles of Russia. Here we visit the authentic Bath Cottage and stroll in the vast Lower Park with 176 fountains of various forms and styles and four cascades, majestic palaces and numerous gilded statues of ancient gods and heroes. Founded in the very beginning of the 18th century by Emperor Peter the Great, not far from his new northern capital St Petersburg, Peterhof was intended to become the most splendid official royal summer residence. The Great Palace rises like a golden curtain at the far end of the Marine Canal which flows through Peterhof’s Lower Park and once formed an approach route for yachts. We return by hydrofoil to the city. Accommodation: Grand Hotel Europe Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch

Day 25 - Sat 29 July St Petersburg

Today we travel to Catherine the Great’s Palace, which houses the extraordinary Amber Room, its six tons of solid amber deftly carved and framed in gold leaf. Once deemed the “eighth wonder of the world”, the room was stripped by the Nazis in 1941, but majestically reconstructed in honour of St Petersburg’s 300th birthday. Leaving St Petersburg, we visit the town of Pushkin, named for Russia’s greatest poet, a charming suburb of St Petersburg and surrounds Tsarskoye Selo (Tsar’s Village). We visit Catherine’s Palace, the elegant Rococo summer residence of the Russian Czars, named for Catherine I (widow of Peter the Great). We tour its various halls, including the Amber and Agate Rooms, and see the ornate décor throughout. We lunch in Podvorie, a restaurant in a traditional Russian log house. On our way back into St Petersburg, we visit “Russia in Miniature”, an interactive Museum.
