Reaching Up, Reaching Out, Loving God, Loving Others

Running Blind Years ago, I worked at a summer Bible camp with my cousin Erik. As an evening staff meeting concluded, a sprinkle suddenly became a downpour. Counselors sprinted off toward cabins, while Erik and I, who didn’t supervise youngsters, debated whether to wait out the storm. We opted to run for it, but being visually impaired, I soon realized the sheets of rain, added to the dark, hindered my view. “I can’t see!” I yelled through the wind to Erik. Immediately, he grabbed my hand, pulling me along. “It’s okay!” he shouted back. “I can!” The sensation of running blindly yet feeling so secure became a metaphor for me about what I can handle and accomplish through faith. When I let God grab my hand and guide me, even when I’m running through dark, stormy times, I experience peace. For though I cannot see what lies ahead, I know God can. -Heidi Mann -June 2016, Newsletternewsletter

Promotion Sunday Every year some of our children reach that certain age or school grade in which they are “promoted” to the next Sunday School Class. We will celebrate Promotion Sunday on June 5 at 8:45 and 11:00 worship services. On June 5th students will attend their current class and the next Sunday, June 12, they will attend their new class. We recognize the growth of our children in the passing of their age and school grade but we never outgrow the need to be students of the Word of God and to grow as disciples of Jesus Christ. If you have not attended a Sunday School class or Bible Study in a while, why not let Promotion Sunday be a reminder to you and make it a point to visit one of our Sunday School classes or Bible Study. God is speaking – it is up to us to listen. The Kid’s Konnection enjoyed a trip to the Lazy 5 Ranch as we wrapped up our series Animal Safri and our regular meeting schedule. We had a great time on Sunday afternoons with Kindergarten – 5th graders sharing about God’s Word, God’s love for us and connecting to all creation. We will take a break through summer, but hope all the children will be able to meet with us when we start again in the fall. A special thanks to Christine Barbee and Kim Overbay for their faithful leadership and to the others who stepped in to assist in leading our children to grow, play and learn about Jesus Christ.

Our United Methodist Youth Fellowship ended the year roasting hot dogs and marshmallows at the fire pit at the spring. We wrapped up our session, “Hunger and Thirst” games and it was great timing as our lesson was Catch the Fire, from Acts 2 and it was on Pentecost Sunday. We talked about how fire has power to be useful as well as destroy, and how the power of the Holy Spirit can work in our lives. We prayed about temptations that we had named in an earlier session and threw those papers in the fire to be consumed – burned away – as we prayed for God to work through the Holy Spirit in our lives. We finished our year with a retreat to the mountains with the theme, “All the people said, Amen”. We ask for your prayers for all our youth and a special thanks to those who helped to lead this year; Brenda Maxwell, Christy & Jeremy Baggarly, Donna & Edward Cook, Leslie Gray, Terri & Charles Pruitt, Shannon Huneycutt, and others who have helped lead our youth to grow in their knowledge and relationship to Jesus Christ. Thank you to everyone who gave donations of items or money for snacks; who have prayed for our students; and have supported the outreach programs. Your care for all in our congregation is a blessing! ~Cold Springs UMC History Highlights of the Month~ Sunday School before Classrooms—When the 1911 church was built, there was not enough money to build Sunday School Classrooms, therefore, Sunday School was held in the sanctuary. Two classes were held in the balcony, two down front in the sanctuary, and two in back of the sanctuary. Probably hard to hear, wouldn’t you think? For most, Sunday School is a deeply rooted tradition, and many parents believe that regular Sunday School attendance is an essential component of childhood. The children were given small picture cards pertaining to the Sunday School lesson for the day with a memory verse and text on the back. Sunday School remains a significant institutional tool for the religious training of succeeding generations as many a child can testify. Many Sunday School teachers have served as role models or examples. NOTE: Wings on the East side of the church were added in 1938 and on the West side in 1951 for Sunday School classrooms. Additional rooms were added when the current church was built in 1991. Mothers and fathers of Cold Springs owe an eternal debt of gratitude to the ladies for teaching their children Christian education over the years.
