October 12, 2016 Royston PAC Meeting – Principal’s Report 1. New Curriculum Teachers in SD71 learned a great deal on September 30 Curriculum Implementation Day at Komox First Nations. In addition, we are bringing in a Metis dancing group for 2 classes to learn and a First Nations Storyteller, Phil Umpleville, for 4 classes in October. 2. New Reporting = Communicating Student Learning Teachers still have the option of either using My Ed BC report cards (which are somewhat similar to the previous report cards) or doing continuous reporting through paper or e-portfolios. Most teachers are using the My EdBC reporting method this year. Some will continue with the portfolio method of communicating student learning. 3. Social Responsibility – Expected/ Unexpected Behaviors was our first focus. Whole Body Listening is our focus for October. Future concepts include body and eyes in the group. 4. Code of Conduct. Mandatory additions below: All schools in BC adhere to the Human Rights Code and as such, the following forms of discrimination are not tolerated at school: race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression; and age. Grossly unacceptable behaviour including bullying, cyberbullying, harassment, intimidation, threatening or violent behaviours while at school, at a school-related activity or in other circumstances where engaging in the activity will have an impact on the school environment will be investigated and dealt with by teachers and school administration. These types of behavior will not be tolerated. 5. Drama Program with Kymme Patrick from Theatreworks is formalized for March through May. Two Theatre Workshops will be provided in mid-January during school hours to see who is interested in having a main part. Katy put in an application to Artstarts for a grant to pay for Kymme’s director fees (approx. $2 000) and will find out in December if our application was accepted. 6. Nut policy –Geneau’s classroom and Phillips’ classroom is now affected. Other classrooms can have nut products in them. 7. Attendance on Fridays – We are noticing a significant increase in absenteeism on Fridays. Curricular content is covered 5 days a week and absent students will be catching up on Mondays on work that is missed on Fridays. 8. Next month’s (November) PAC meeting, I am unable to attend, but will send a principal’s report in advance of the meeting.
