Aboriginal Secondary Education Transition Officer (ASETO) Appointments Our second ASETO position will be shared between Wendy Noble and Anthony Wilson until the end of the year and Angela Giles will increase her tutoring hours at the school. 2014 SA Excellence in Public Education Awards Ceremony We congratulate Merilyn Ramm, School Support Officer, who has been selected as one of seventy finalists for the 2014 SA Excellence in Public Education Awards. Merilyn and I have been invited to attend the Awards Ceremony held at the National Wine Centre on Monday 29 September where the seven winners will be announced. We wish Merilyn good luck. Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Focus School I am delighted to announce that our school has been selected as a STEM Focus School for the next three years (2015 – 2017). This focus will partially fund a leadership position whose role will be to work collaboratively the other curriculum leaders to lead the teaching and learning of science, maths, technology and engineering across the school. Over the last three years there have been an increasing number of students interested in pursuing careers in these fields of study. We envisage one of the many benefits of our focus will see an increase in the number of our senior students selecting subjects in these areas of study and achieving the tertiary entrance scores required for their University and TAFE pathway. International Students from Japan Our school has been invited to find families to host a student from Japan for 2015. The student will stay with the family from 30/01/15 to 27/11/15 and attend our school. A subsidy of $250 per week is paid to the host family to help with covering the costs. If you are interested in this opportunity please contact Tom Barone, Senior Leader. Principals Visit from West Java On Wednesday 10 September we were fortunate to have another group of 18 Principals visiting our school from West Java. This group were interested in learning about the Vocational Education and Training programs our students’ access whilst they complete their SACE. Our recent campus newsletter highlighted the variety of excursions undertaken by class teachers to support learning in their classrooms. I have been impressed by the creative thinking that goes into selecting suitable venues which support learning in such an integrated, yet accessible, manner. To see so many pictures of students engaged and enjoying their learning whilst at the same time accessing the community is truly heartening. As mentioned previously we encourage caregivers to support these activities and the invitation to our introductory session for volunteers will be arriving home in the first week of next term. I am delighted to report that we have already had a number of caregivers’ contact us to discuss the type of police clearance required to act as a volunteer and I can confirm that it is a Department for Communities and Social Inclusion (DCSI) screening assessment. This is the most detailed screening assessment and as such it can be a lengthy process. During recent weeks our leadership team have been meeting with the caregivers of our 2015 enrolments. These meetings serve as a reminder of the changes ahead for many of our students as

they progress through the school and go forward into the wider community. For our Year 12 students we are entering the final stages of their Modified SACE and looking ahead to their postschool options. Whilst we have endeavoured to prepare them as fully as possible for this shift we are aware that things don’t always run smoothly and that is why we are always available to support student and their caregivers during this time of change. For our younger students it is also a time to look ahead as they either move into the Friday Transition Program or they progress to offsite work experience options. We will continue to work with caregivers as we continue to design a pathway for these students. We recently sent home copies of student timetables to all caregivers following a parental request. The timetables include details of the current subjects being delivered as well as the name of the designated teacher. We hope that you find this information useful and I am pleased to note that from next year this information will be available online. Andrew Gilsenan-Reed HEAD OF CAMPUSCAL SPECIALUCATION

for women, and that women can be very successful in the engineering industry. At the end of the workshop we were set a task, our task was to create a tower over 20 centimetres high that could bear as much weight as possible whilst using as little material as possible in half an hour. We were put into groups of 3-4. The materials we were provided with were only masking tape and newspaper. We were also set a budget, with the cost of sticky tape being $100,000 for every 30 centimetres, and $10,000 for every sheet of newspaper used.

CO-EDUCATION MIDDLE YEARS CAMPUS

This term has rapidly come to an end with students achieving pleasing results across the board. Last Wednesday we held a middle school assembly in the gym where we celebrated some of the achievements of students this term. We also heard from our SRC reps about the handball competition and had a feature presentation of photographs from the Year 8 camp. The assembly was hosted by two year 9 students and we had performances from our year 10 band and our school musical. Students in years 8 and 9 are over the next week completing and presenting their pastoral care presentation for this term based on Learner Profile qualities from our IB Middle Years Program.

Once all the year 9’s had completed their towers we put them to the test, with the tower holding the most weight, and costing the least amount winning. Shirin, Naomi, Irene and Makalie created the winner tower. Naomi YEAR 9 STUDENT

TOURNAMENT OF MINDS

The Tournament of the Minds competition was held at Flinders University on Sunday 14 September. We entered a team for each of the following categories: Maths and Engineering, Applied Technology, Social Sciences and Language and Literature. This is the first time ever that Roma Mitchell has had four teams entered in this competition. The competition involved students working in teams of 7 to solve a challenge in a creative manner. The teams worked on these challenges over the last 5 weeks during their lunch breaks and after school. On the tournament day the teams presented their solution to the long-term challenge on which they had been working, and they also faced a panel of judges to solve an unseen spontaneous challenge. Every team worked hard on their challenges, delivered an excellent presentation on the day and received very positive comments from the judges. Our Maths and Engineering team did particularly well and won 1st place. This is the second year in a row we have won this competition and the team will be invited to take part in The Australia Pacific Final held in Melbourne this year from the 16-19th of October. Thank you to all the staff and family members that attended the tournament day and gave up their time to work with the teams over the last 6 weeks, and a special thank you to the team facilitators: Sumita Wahi, Diana Hinic, Suman Chaudhary, Steven Lindsay and Alistair Ward. Noel Hernes COUNSELLOR Tournament of Minds has been taking on schools and been challenging multiple minds for many years. On Sunday the 14 September, after a lot of editing and practicing, 4 teams from Roma Mitchell Secondary attended the annual competition. Each team had two challenges to complete, a long- term and a spontaneous. The long-term challenge for each was different for each team and demanding different skills. The spontaneous challenge focused mostly on teamwork and quick thinking. The four different teams where based on distinctive skills of the mind. The four skills were: Maths and Engineering, Social Science, Applied Technology and Language and Literature. The Language and Literature team was mostly only Girls campus students. All of the teams were mixed and even though the preparation time for the teams were less, RMSC Team 1 won the Maths and Engineering and everyone, including the teachers, had fantastic day. On Sunday the 14 September, we participated in the Tournament of Minds Competition at Flinders University. We entered four teams in the categories of: Language and Literature, Maths Engineering, Social Science and Applied Technology. Each team was given a long-term challenge to complete in six weeks and present it to a panel of judges on the day. We dedicated our lunch breaks, lesson times and after school hours to work on the presentation and prepare our props and materials ready for performing. All teams did fantastic performances on the day and all our teachers were proud of the work we created. One team, Maths Engineering, took first prize at the regional finals and will now compete in the national finals in Melbourne early next term. We are very excited about this because the RMSC Maths Engineering team won last year at the regional finals as well. We wish them the best of luck in the finals in Melbourne. We had a lot of fun participating in the challenge and learnt a lot of new skills, including how to perform in front of an audience, building our confidence in presentations, and teamwork and dedication to a project. We are looking forward to next years Tournament of Minds and hope we are successful again.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION – SELF RELIANT CAMP As part of the Stage 2 Outdoor Education course, students needed to complete a practical assessment in a self-reliant lightweight camping. Students needed to show theoretical skills in risk management, route planning, equipment list, meal plans and complete their Senior First Aid in preparation for this camp. The self-reliant kayaking trip was conducted on the River Murray near Blanchetown from Tuesday 2 September to Thursday 4 September. Students camped in a self-sufficient manner alongside the river travelling through Blanchetown towards Swan Reach. Each member of the course had to plan their route along the river and take control of the group until they reached their checkpoint. Each leader had the responsibility of navigating with the use of a map, checking on the morale of the group, organising breaks between paddles and checking into teachers via a CB Radio. All members of the group showed excellent leadership and navigation skills and have developed their skills in lightweight self-sufficient camping.

FUNDRAI Shane Dalziel HEALTH & PE Specialist Sport Cycling Following are reports about Track Racing at the Superdrome from two of the students on the Cycling Programme. One of the aims of the programme is to get our students competing in Cycling SA competitions. Dave Gomer SPECIALIST SPORT CYCLING COACH

Over the last couple of weeks I have been involved in the Kilkenny track winter series, which was held at the Adelaide Superdrome. I went to four of the seven track racing nights. On my first night out I did my first ever scratch race and four derby sprints and won them all getting most points overall out of the juniors. It was a very new experience for me because it was my first time racing on the track. The next week I had another night of racing and I didn't do as good because they put me in with the A grade riders. I hadn’t done as much training as them because they are the best U/17 riders in the state and I only beat a few of them. On the last race night they did a presentation and I received a silver medal for completing 150 laps all up over the 4 nights that I attended. During the summer season I will also be competing in the Kilkenny summer track series and I look forward to competing against all of my fellow track riders. Ross Beauchamp YEAR 12 STUDENT I started cycling two years ago for fun and it wasn’t until a year ago when Dave Gomer got me sponsored by Norwood Cycling Club and I started racing on both road and track. The difference between road and track cycling is that the bikes are different and one is indoors and the other performed outdoors. Track bikes are different to road bikes in the sense that they have no brakes and to make gears bigger or smaller you change cogs and chain rings instead of moving through your gears using your shifter as on a road bike. Track racing is normally a shorter distance than road and requires different types of bike skills to when I race outdoors. Throughout this year I have completed three road events and five track sprint race nights. I did not do as well as I would have liked on the road but I have won a fair share of races on track. I am now looking forward to summer so as I can try my luck at Criterium racing. Matthew Holland YEAR 10 STUDENT

At the start of the year I asked my textiles teacher Ms Colaruotolo if she thought I was capable of creating a formal dress for school formal, and surprisingly she said yes. I had ten weeks to complete the dress for my subject, but it had to be done in eight weeks if I wanted to wear it to year 12 Formal. I won “Best Dressed” on the CoEducation side at the Formal. Recently the dress was entered in the Royal Adelaide Show and won two prizes, first prize in “Garment, any fashion article for a teenager” and a special prize “Most outstanding garment for exhibitors 17 to 19 years of age.” On 14 September I had the opportunity to model the dress at the South Australian AATFA (Australian Apex Teenage Fashion Awards) Competition. The day consisted of getting my hair and makeup done, and practicing walking on the catwalk. At the end of the day, I got the encouragement award. It is a royal blue short dress with white lace trims and a removable floor length skirt with a satin ribbon trim.

enter student photographs in a variety of categories to compete against other schools. This was more than double the entries from 2013, demonstrating the popularity of Photography at our school. The results were fantastic as there were many winning photographs with 90 entrants who won prizes! This result was a wonderful achievement, which reflects the hard work from both students and their teachers. One student in particular, Jordan Curtis in year 12, has shown a real flair and passion for Photography and won 6 first prizes, 3 seconds and 2 third places. His successful achievements were noticed by the Advertiser and local Messenger which published a story about his success. His favourite winning photograph is included here.

This online only service is provided by yourtutor (yourtutor.com.au), and our school is sponsoring this program for 2014.

Please contact Rachael Wieland, Business Manager on 8161 4600 if you have any enquires regarding this initiative.

DECD 2014-17 STRATEGIC PLAN The recent launch of the Strategic Plan 2014-2017 signals the department’s commitment to improve Central Office services to better support schools and preschools. Implementing the plan will allow leaders to get the support they need to do what’s best for local schools, have less administrative burdens and more time to spend on children and students. BANK SA FREEDOM ACCOUNT Roma Mitchell Secondary College Governing Council is supporting a new initiative from BankSA to encourage student banking.

If you would like your child to open an account please collect a pack from Building 1, front office and return to any BankSA branch by 26 September.

The tutors in the online homework centre (YOURTUTOR) won’t do homework for students. Students can also access SkillsBuilder, which offers thousands of practice questions in Maths, Science and English. All students have been issued with a personal access card with their individual login details, which contain all the information needed to connect.
