Vorwort

Foreword

Is the Bible still relevant? The Bible’s impact on Germany can hardly be ignored. Five hundred years ago, Emperor Charles V and the followers of Martin Luther, Professor at the University of Wittenberg, confronted each other in Augsburg. The exhibit has a letter on display written by Martin Luther a few days before the Diet of Augsburg. In this letter, he expresses his anxiety and fears. Visitors will also discover a beautifully illuminated book of prayers that was presented as a gift from a friend of the family to Charles V when he was a teenager. Two committed Christians encounter each other, both are trying to reform the Church and preserve its unity, but cannot find common ground. The conflict is still felt today. The exhibits in Augsburg and Wittenberg are a powerful testimony to our present times as these exhibits were organized in cooperation between local government, and Catholic and Protestant Christians. They serve as a living witness to the insight that conflict can lead to respect and—as is true for music—that harmony grows out of dissonance. Museum of the Bible is an organization that invites all people to engage with the Bible. We want to encourage the public to explore the treasures found in the Jewish and Christian Bible, and discover “something old and something new” (Mt 13:52). In November 2017, the doors to our museum in Washington, DC, will open with displays spread over 430,000 square feet, inviting the public to engage with the stories, history, and impact of the Bible, and to experience what is comfortably familiar as well as what is unfamiliar and new.

The Bible is one of the great treasures of mankind. It is one book made up of many books. It carries one big story, woven together out of many stories. It has a very specific place in history, and yet transcends languages and cultures all around the globe. As Museum of the Bible, we are glad to put this book into the center. And we are happy to support and sponsor Bible exhibitions around the world, and especially in Germany in this historic year of the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. We do this in an ecumenical spirit and in cooperation with our German friends. It is our hope that the exhibitions “Unser Buch – Our Book” in Augsburg and Wittenberg will serve to engage visitors from Germany and around the world with the Bible.

(Psalm 119,115)

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. (Psalm 119:105)

From the beginning of time, people have encountered the living God in the words of the Bible and are inspired to find direction, comfort, confidence, and vitality from this Word. Our Book—500 years after the Reformation we want to bridge all confessional differences, and make visible that which unites us at the center: The Word of God, delivered to us in the Old and New Testaments. For that reason, all Christian churches, denominations, and confessions in Augsburg have come together to plan and execute this exhibition, and because the fascination of this Book has continually grown in us throughout its long history of interpretation. Throughout the centuries, we have learned that this Book was written and interpreted by human beings but that the human interaction with the Writings never destroys or questions the holiness and source of the Word of the living God. Through the Word, God reveals himself as God incarnate. He does not hide himself behind the human effort to understand him, yet at the same time he breaks through all efforts and goes beyond them. What a treasure is our holy Writings, our common Book. We hope that this exhibition will attract many visitors, and above all we hope for an encounter with the Word of the living God.

Roland S. Werner, Unser Buch.

No other book than the Bible, and no other ideas than those that are deduced from this book have shaped our culture in a similarly significant way. Be it science, music, architecture, human rights, democracy, welfare, education, technological progress, or emancipation—throughout many centuries Holy Scripture has inspired people. The study of the Bible triggered Martin Luther’s great rediscovery of a God who is turned toward us in his grace. This brought about a movement which, starting from Wittenberg, changed the entire world. Therefore, it is only fitting that an anniversary of the Reformation will include an exhibition that is especially devoted to the Bible, highlighting her innovative and transforming power. It is my joy that we have this exhibition in the “city of Luther,” and I am convinced that many people will be inspired and blessed by it.

Einleitung

Introduction

Our Book—The Story of the Bible from Moses to the Moon. That is the guiding theme of this Bible exhibition, developed specifically for the year 2017, the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. The exhibition is shown in two places that are closely connected to Reformation history—Augsburg and Wittenberg. The Bible is “our book” for many people. It is the common holy book of Jews and Christians around the world. There is no other book that has been copied and printed as much. There is no other book that has been translated into so many languages, and that has been used to move and impact people in every region of the world. For German Ashkenazic Jews in the middle ages, the Torah was the central touchstone for religious life and community. For western Europeans, specifically Germans, Martin Luther’s translation of the Bible stands as a milestone in the history of vernacular Bible translations. It also contributed to the formation of the German language and culture, representing a significant movement of change in Germany’s religious and political history. The Bible continues to impact the life and culture of Germans today. The Bible is full of stories. And the Bible itself has an exciting history. This exhibition presents valuable and rare Bibles alongside other artifacts connected with the Bible. The catalog presents all of the artifacts shown in the exhibition. Together they invite you to discover the more than 3,000-year-old story of “our book.”

Die Geschichte der Bibel entdecken

Discovering the Story of the Bible

When asked in 1928 by Berlin magazine Die Dame which book had inspired him the most, the well-known German author Bertolt Brecht answered, “You will laugh: the Bible!” The Bible has shaped our world like no other book. Western culture, language, education, and common life would look very different without the Bible. The Bible has an exciting history of its own. Its story reaches from ancient Israel right into our time. As we follow this history, we realize the Bible is not simply one book but a collection of writings that have been brought together in various communities over the centuries. It is well worth the time to discover this book anew, a book that has traveled “from Moses to the Moon” to today.

Anfänge Wort und Schrift

Beginnings Word and Writ

At some point in time, people invented the art of writing. According to many, this apparently happened in different places independently of one another. In Mesopotamia, it was perhaps the Sumerians who invented the cuneiform script, which was then taken over by the Babylonians, Assyrians, and other groups. Cuneiform was initially based on logograms, or symbols representing words, which eventually evolved to form a system of syllables that could be used to spell any word. In Egypt, hieroglyphs were created, which originally included signs for individual letters as well as syllables in addition to logograms. A writing system of only individual letters seems to have been used first in Egypt by West Semitic merchants who needed a quick, efficient system. Out of this one root, various “alphabets” developed, eventually including the Hebrew, Greek, and Latin alphabets as well as the Aramaic and Arabic alphabets. With the invention of writing, facts and knowledge could be better preserved. Among known early writings, there are innumerable cuneiform tablets, as well as monumental texts like the stele of Hammurabi from the eighteenth century BCE. Similarly, there are countless Egyptian temple and tomb inscriptions from all periods. Without writing, the Hebrew Bible, what Christians call the “Old Testament,” would not be preserved in the form it is today. Like today, people in the ancient Near East used several languages, so rulers sometimes put texts in different languages sideby-side so that speakers of those languages could understand what was written. A good example of this is the so-called “Rosetta Stone” from Egypt. By using three scripts and two languages, different social and linguistic groups were able to understand the message it contained. This early example shows how writing, translation, and the transmission of a message are all interrelated. All three of these are important for the Bible and the dynamic transformation this book brought about in our world.

Cuneiform The Oldest System of Writing These cuneiform tablets represent the earliest form of writing in human history. Cuneiform was developed around 3200 BCE in Mesopotamia, today’s southern Iraq, most likely before Egyptian hieroglyphs. The oldest cuneiform tablets come from a temple complex in the city of Uruk. Sumerian is first known language to be written in cuneiform, then later Akkadian and its dialects, Babylonian and Assyrian, and even Hittite and Per-

sian. Scribes wrote by taking a pointed reed and making impressions in wet clay. The invention of writing revolutionized human communication. Most documents were written to record administrative, business, and legal transactions. Not everyone learned the art of writing in cuneiform. It was mostly boys from elite families that were trained in this art for the important task of recordkeeping for economic affairs and history as well as religious

texts. Though cuneiform tablets do not contain biblical texts, they help in understanding the history and background of societies, cities, and kingdoms mentioned in the Hebrew Bible, especially those Mesopotamian empires that were in constant contact with Israel and Judah from about the ninth century BCE onward.

The Rosetta Stone comes from Memphis, Egypt, and is dated to 196 BCE. The inscription is in two languages and two scripts: Hieroglyphs and Demotic, each representing a stage of Egyptian, and Greek. The inscription honors the Egyptian ruler Ptolemy V as a benefactor, and stresses the mutual support between this Hellenistic ruler and the indigenous Egyptian priesthood. The Rosetta Stone was rediscovered in 1799 by Napoleon’s Egyptian expedition, and became the key to the translation of the ancient Egyptian language and script. The original is housed at the British Museum in London.

Cuneiform Texts and the Bible Ancient Mesopotamia, where cuneiform writing was invented, is the setting for some of the Genesis narratives. The story of the Tower of Babel in Genesis 11 is set there, and Ur in Mesopotamia is the traditional home of the biblical patriarch Abraham. Moreover, Mesopotamia was the land of Assyria and Babylon, great empires that waged war against the kingdoms of Israel and Judah. There are also cuneiform tablets from Babylonia that date to the time of the Babylonian exile beginning around 597 BCE. These documents, including the Babylonian Chronicles and the rations tablets of Jehoiachin, the captive king, shed light on what life would have been like for the Jewish community who lived there.

Papyrus, Parchment, and Paper Shortly after cuneiform was invented in Mesopotamia, Egyptians began writing on a very different material and in a different format: the papyrus scroll. Papyrus is a material made from the fibers of a reed-like plant grown along the Nile River. For over three thousand years of Egyptian history and extending into Greco-Roman times, from around 3000 BCE and beyond 200 CE, texts were written on papyrus scrolls. Compared to cuneiform tablets, this was a great step forward in the portability of writing.

Not long after, parchment came into use. It is named after the city of Pergamon (in modern Turkey), which was in Hellenistic times one of the major centers of production and trade of parchment. It is most commonly made of calfskin, sheepskin, or goatskin. It was used for writing documents, notes, or the pages of a book. Both papyrus and parchment were used in the form of scrolls, but about the fourth century CE books began to surpass scrolls. The book, or codex, revolutionized the way texts were read, because

they allowed a reader to flip back and forth and compare different portions of the text more easily than in a scroll. Although the codex was not invented by Christians, its widespread use was closely intertwined with the spread of Christianity. In the early centuries of the codex, papyrus was used for pages, but eventually papyrus gave way to parchment. Like the tablets and scrolls that preceded them, medieval codices were manuscripts, meaning they were written by hand. It was only in medieval times that paper started to replace parchment.

The Gilgamesh Epic is a term used for an extended narrative from the first millennium, but which is composed from older texts in the Sumerian, Akkadian, Hittite, and Hurrian languages. It bears some connections with biblical texts, and tells, among other things, the story of a great flood.
