Let Go and Let God I had heard the slogan '”Let Go and Let God'” long before coming into Al Anon. It is a phrase that is popular throughout all forms of religious and even non-religious groups in our society. I had tried practicing 'letting go' long before joining Al Anon, but hadnʼt mastered the ability to let go and allow peace to take over in my heart.

After years of mistrust, I still felt the urge to control others out of anxiety. Not being able

For many years prayer has been a practice in my life, but I didn't have peace of mind when it came to relationships. Having an alcoholic sibling has affected my whole family. The kinship in my family has been one of secrets, fear, mistrust, uncontrolled anger, and undefined boundaries. Before joining AlAnon, the behaviors of my family members baffled me. I had much difficulty letting God take over the situations concerning my relationship with them. Also, my own sick behaviors bled over into my personal life and other relationships.

JANUARY 2015

Newsletter January 2015

to let God handle “situations” and “people”, I had a difficult time letting the God of my understanding have complete power. As I began to let go and let God take care of how other people acted, I began to feel more peace of mind. I stopped taking bad behaviors personally, understanding that it is part of belonging to a family affected by alcoholism. My own afflicted behaviors began to slowly heal. Now I am better. I am far from perfect, but I no longer expect perfection from myself and others in my family. I can more readily let go during a time of crisis in my family and let God take over. I now allow God to be the One responsible for healing, guiding, and taking care of others. I am far from perfect, but today 'letting go and letting God' is much easier! Mis propios comportamientos afectados comenzaron a sanar lentamente. Ahora estoy mejor. Sandy R.

Not my Circus: a personal slogan I have found this slogan extremely helpful recentl y, as I learn to develop healthy boundaries with famil y and friends. When m y mother calls and unloads her drama and painful emotions onto me with requests for help, or I feel sucked into yet another crisis in m y alcoholic friend's li fe, I sa y to m ysel f, "Not m y circus, not m y monkeys, not m y pain." It relates to the three C's, "I didn't cause it, can't control it, can't cure it." But for me, this slogan adds a humorous visual- the situation which is presented to me as an urgent problem begins to morph into a ridiculous side-show act. Un folding in a tent, with a ringmaster who is choosing to set in motion the elephants juggling balls, the lions leaping

through fire, an overweight tightrope walker balancing on a wobbly wire. I am suddenly pushed into this tent and placed in charge of the next act: monkeys! I look at the monkeys who are wildly out o f control and I look at the ringmaster who is yelling at me to "do something!" And I walk out. Not m y circus, not m y monkeys, not m y pain. I have choices, and I choose to sta y in m y own space, keeping the focus on me. Christina

Y yo me salgo. Christina

Early in my recovery in Al-Anon, I heard the slogan, "let go and let God." go and let god"?

The more I faced the hard choice of changing my life, the more stressed I became. I could not stop worrying about the things I wanted to fix. One day I drove to the ocean and took a walk, allowing my mind to empty into the sound of the ocean waves. When I returned to my car, I discovered that I had dropped my keys somewhere among the sand dunes where I had walked. For a second, the old me panicked. Then, a peaceful feeling came over me. As I traced my way back through the dunes, I saw my keys on the path. I sensed a new, better way had guided me. Is this what it means to "let

I got back to my car and put the key in the ignition and started to drive off. I looked in the rear-view mirror and saw a brilliant double rainbow. It seemed, a higher, intuitive source was communicating with me. It was without words, yet I felt guided to an insight that I could see more when I let go than in all the years that I had held on to control. The mind that I had emptied, now filled with a conviction that I was on the right path. How had I come to this new place? I simply let go and let god. Cynthia
