Helping Great Britain Work Well: A new health and safety system strategy Key Massages: • We can be proud of Great Britain's record on occupational health and safety – its one best in the world • Getting risk management right is an enabler for innovation and growth and is integral to business success, as well as the well-being of workers • Everyone in the system needs to play their part and make Great Britain work well. We all have a responsibility.

Helping Great Britain Work Well: Six strategy themes • Acting together: Promoting broader ownership of health and safety. • Tackling ill health: Highlighting and tackling the cost of work related ill health. • Managing risk well: Simplifying risk management and helping business to grow. • Supporting smaller employers: Giving SME’s simple advice so they know what they have to do. • Keeping pace with change: Anticipating and tackling new health and safety challenges. • Sharing our success: Promoting the benefits of Great Britain’s world-class health and safety system.

Why? It provides a formal structured means of control It is a legal requirement

Risk Assessment - obligation to assess risk A specific requirement of: The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 All employers must conduct a risk assessment. Employers with 5 or more employees have to record the significant findings of their risk assessment

“Where the risk can truly be said to be part of the incidents of everyday life, it is less likely the injured person could be said to have been exposed to risk by the conduct of the operation in question”

Risk Assessment – Safety and Health how do we achieve a consistent approach across a diverse portfolio. The foundation of all good risk assessment • Who is completing the risk assessment? • Skills, Knowledge, Training and Experience (SKTE) – Dynamic RA • Give health risks the same billing as safety risks • Not accepting generic risk assessment • Less is more. • Creating the right environment for people to thrive. • Review show me, what can go wrong, fail safe

Risk Assessment – paperwork doesn’t make the task safe or free from health hazards

Risk Assessment – process

Managing health risks is no different to managing safety risks. This diagram outlines the basic principles that you need to know.

Successful Health and Safety Management - Risk Assessment “Accidents, ill health and incidents are seldom random events. They generally arise from failure of control and involve multiple contributory elements, The immediate cause may be human or technical failure, but they usually arise from organisational failings, which are the responsibility of management”
