Can This Put You In Control Of Your DNA? If you’ve ever felt that you were stuck with the genes you were born with, think again… A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition proves without a doubt that you can change your genes based on what you eat… Researchers gave participants high doses of omega 3 oils for 26 weeks. They analyzed the participants genes before and after the study using a process called whole-genome transcriptomics analysis. What they found was that supplementing with omega 3’s every day for this period of time changed the expression of over 1,000 genes in the participants! [1] It “switched on” the genes that tell your body to focus on reducing inflammation and hardening of the arteries. According to the researchers, “These results are the first to show that intake of [omega 3’s] for 26 weeks can alter the gene expression… to a more antiinflammatory and anti-atherogenic status.” Pretty amazing, huh? This is just one of the many studies being done in a new and exciting area of research called epigenetics. Basically, you can change what genes in your body are “turned on or off” based on environmental factors and what you put into your body (I guess we really do become what we eat!) Who knows, one day they may discover how to “turn off” the genes that are associated with obesity and gaining fat easily.

May is that month in which people either stop procrastinating and really try to reach their fitness goals by summer or they give up on the New Years resolution. When the warm weather hits, it’s so easy to excuse yourself from hitting the gym and say to yourself, “I’ll get my exercise outside by working the garden, walking the dog or playing with the kids.” It’s a trap we have all fallen into and the guilty pleasures of those hot summer days take their toll and before you know it, the kids are back to school and you are feeling guilty about the weight you packed on. Trust me, I’ve seen it. Every fall we hear the same thing. I’m not saying that you can’t have fun. All I’m getting at is that if you have been working hard over the past few months, don’t ruin it for yourself. Think about a maintenance plan. So you have lost 10 or 15 pounds and that’s fantastic, if you know you won’t be coming to the gym as often, then the only other tool you have at your expense is keeping your nutrition in check. Hollay, one of our senior trainers, is here to do just that. She will be launching our Nutritional Services department and arming you with extremely simple but not well know tools and plans to keep your hard earned weight loss in check. Just like coming to the gym had to become a force of habit, so to is developing a sound nutritional plan. Don’t sabotage what you have already accomplished. Hollay will be offering a FREE dietary analysis for as limited period of time. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at how a simple strategy will pay off in more weight loss even though you may be spending less time at the gym. Spots will be limited so keep you eyes peeled for details coming soon.

But until that time comes, we’ll have to be happy with Andy Luukkonen what science has uncovered so far… that we have Owner, Body Fit Health Club the power to turn “on” our gene expression for better

overall health. Here’s how you can get started and do just that: Fish oil—as you saw from the study I told you about earlier, supplementing with fish oil tells your genes to switch on the bodily processes that reduce inflammation and hardening of the arteries. Fish oil is rich in omega 3s that have the potential to do this. Shoot for 1,000—3,000 mg a day.

Could Optimism be the Secret to Living a Longer, Happier Life? Recent scientific research now confirms the secret ingredient to a longer life—an optimistic attitude. And there’s even better news...anyone can learn to be more optimitic. A Dutch study found that optimistic people live longer; in fact, almost 30% longer than pessimists. Scientists found an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, heart attack, stroke, and weakening of the immune sys-tem associated with pessimism. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic, reporting on a 30year study, found that optimistic people live about 19 percent longer than pessimists do. These findings come from studying 839 people living in Minnesota. The researchers found people classified as “optimists” had significantly better survival rates. Optimists were less likely to develop depression, sought medical help when needed, and took better care of themselves. So how can you become more optimistic? Here are six tips for becoming a more optimistic person: 1. Set Specific Goals. A study of happy people found they set goals and consistently take action. 2. Project A Cheerful Voice. Research has shown people feel the emotion they are acting. Use a positive voice. 3. Use Positive Language. Use upbeat words: opportunity, challenge, recharging, success, can do, solution. 4. Practice Good Posture. Optimists have good posture, stand tall, walk briskly, and take big steps. 5. Focus on Solutions. When a difficult situation comes up, focus on the solution, and put it into action. 6. Be A Role Model. When you act as a role model for your co-workers, employees, family, and friends, you’ll become more optimistic. Just by applying these six steps to your life, you can change your thinking, and reduce your risk of physical illness and live a longer, and more fulfilling life. www.bodyfit.ca © SERG Holdings, LLC All Rights Reserved

Women 35 to 50

As women enter their 30s, they begin a slow ending process of their reproductive years, known as perimenopause and menopause. Since each woman is unique, the duration and intensity of menopausal symptoms varies. Scientific studies have shown that, along with a healthy diet and lifestyle, consuming phytoestrogens (plant estrogens ie: Red Clover) may reduce the symptoms of menopause. These are also the decades when laugh lines and crow’s feet begin to appear along with a double chin. “A Little Gratitude Goes A Long Way” This month is a month of gratitude—a time to either give or receive thanks (depends if you’re a mom!) on Mother’s Day. And while this month is an excellent reason to practice being grateful, why not be grateful all the time? It can make you happier. In his book “Thanks!” Dr. Robert A. Emmons describes a 10-week experiment he carried out with three groups of people. He found that turning thankfulness into a daily practice increased overall happiness by 25%! What’s more, folks not only reported being happier but also more optimistic about their futures, felt more satisfied in their lives and even exercised 1.5 hours more a week than those folks who didn’t practice gratitude. That’s not bad for something that may only take 5—10 minutes out of your day. So this month, make sure to be grateful on Mother’s. But also challenge yourself to make the entire month, a month of gratitude… and see if anything good comes out of it. It’s my sneaking suspicion that something good will come out of it… but you’ll have to try it for yourself to find out. Thanks for reading, and please—sit back, relax and enjoy this month’s issue of Richly Rewarding Living!
