here’s something about Parramatta that brings people together. For thousands of years, Aboriginal clans of the Darug people gathered by the river to meet, trade, collect food and feast. The British were also drawn to this place; having found fertile soil, they established the early colony and paved the way for people to migrate from across the world.

Currently over 50% of Parramatta’s residents were born overseas, making the city a melting pot of cultural influences. The City has a youthful edge too – the average age of the people living here is just 30, seven years younger than Australia’s national average. This interesting and eclectic place continues to evolve and revitalize with new things popping up all the time. Heritage sites bring history to life and serve award-winning cuisine. Amazing coffee shops delight, street festivals transform laneways, and the natural oasis along the banks of the river is a perfect place to escape the daily grind. Parramatta is coming together now more than ever. And for those willing to dig beneath the surface, it’s just brimming with discoveries. Come on in!

Fast forward to the 21st century and Parramatta continues to be a magnet for Sydney-siders, along with people from all corners of the country and the world.

River Foreshore

River Foreshore Get in touch with the Parramatta River, the lifeblood that has sustained this natural oasis of plants and animals for millennia. This lush green haven in the middle of the City is a picturesque place to enjoy a picnic, a bike ride, or relax with a leisurely stroll. As well as water birds, you might even spot the long-finned eel, which Parramatta is famous for. Artworks dotted along the foreshore give insight to the remarkable Aboriginal culture and history, the life of the river and feats of the early colonial settlement, which began here in 1788. Climb, slide and chase through the kids’ playground. During holiday periods, the river foreshore comes alive with child-friendly activities. Every day you can see the beautiful light and fountain display off Barry Wilde Bridge at 7.30AM to 10.30PM (water show only) or sunset to 9.30PM (water and light show).

O’Connell St, Parramatta 02 9683 5755, www.pirtekstadium.com With almost thirty years of heroic sporting clashes under its belt, you can’t beat the atmosphere at Pirtek Stadium, one of Australia’s most iconic venues to play and watch football. Formerly known as Parramatta Stadium, our unstoppable rugby league boys The Parramatta Eels have called it home since 1986 and their National Rugby League games are hosted here from March until September. From October to May, it’s soccer time with the stadium hosting The Western Sydney Wanderers Football Club, the stars of the Hyundai A-League and winners of the 2014 Asians Champions League. Over winter, Pirtek Stadium is also the new home to the Greater Western Sydney Rams, a rugby union team who are bringing the best to the greater west. With a vast selection of pre- and post-match dining options nearby, a game at Pirtek Stadium is the ideal choice for your next night out with friends.

Harris Park Harris Park used to be known as Western Sydney’s “Little India”. These days the range of culinary diversity on Wigram Street has expanded to include Lebanese sweet shops, Italian and Greek fine dining, and some stellar Japanese Teppanyaki. But don’t think the community is just for passionate foodies; Harris Park is also a family-friendly neighbourhood where heritage homes line the streets of an ever-welcoming suburb, just a stone’s throw from the buzz of the Parramatta CBD.
