The World News Express (WNE) Reuters World News Express (WNE) is a file-based video delivery system. In addition to delivering video stories (as Reuters journalists complete them), WNE also supplies video-related scripts which are accessible across the Newsroom, creating opportunities for collaboration. By permanently linking distribution rights, shot lists and script information to the file, WNE makes it easy to search, manage and store videos. WNE content is normally delivered via satellite over the existing WNS transmission path to a Reuters-supplied WNE PC. The WNE PC is able to forward WNE content to other client computer equipment at the receiving location via FTP, using a Reuters-supplied application called FTP Suite. This document describes how to configure your Reuters WNE FTP Suite once it has been installed on your WNE PC.

Prerequisites for the FTP Suite Configuration 1.

A Reuters-supplied WNE caching PC must already be running the WNE Client suite of applications (including File Direct version 3 on Windows XP). The WNE Client must be correctly permissioned with a Reuterssupplied customer name.

2.

The Reuters FTP Suite application must already be installed on the WNE caching PC.

3.

You must have obtained the FTPSuiteVideo&Scripts.reg registry file from your Thomson Reuters representative and run that registry file on your WNE PC.

Configuring FTP Suite to send WNE Videos and Scripts to an FTP Server Network Configuration The Reuters WNE caching PC must have FTP connectivity to the FTP Server. It must be possible to connect to the FTP Server using a known account and write files to a specified folder. Contact your network administrator to confirm that this is possible. Note: This configuration procedure assumes that you have already installed the WNE website and FTP Suite application and executed the registry file on the machine on which you plan to configure the FTP Suite.

FTPSuite Registry File The running of the FTPSuiteVideo&Scripts.reg file simplifies your FTP Suite configuration by presetting some common configuration options for you. Be sure to obtain a copy of the FTPSuiteVideo&Scripts.reg file from your Thomson Reuters representative and run it before initiating the FTP Suite configuration (but after you have conducted the FTP Suite installation if it is not already installed on your WNE PC). Backing up your existing Registry settings 1.

Select Run from the Start menu in Window.

2.

Type regedit in the Open field.

3.

Locate the FTPSuite key in the folder structure on the left (hkey_local_machine/software/reuters/).

4.

Right click on it and select Export from the menu that appears.

5.

Enter a file name and location for the registry key being backed up. You might want to place this file on the desktop and name it FTPSuite_backup.reg.

Enter WNEVideosAndScripts (or another name of your choice) in the Title field. Ensure that the Periodic scanning checkbox is selected. Click the Add button (under FTP Sites) and enter the IP address or hostname of your FTP Server. Enter the Username and Password for your FTP Server in the appropriate fields. Click the Browse button (under Locations) and select E:\Reuters\Feed to designate where FTP Suite will find the Reuters WNE files that it is to transfer. Note: This field must be set to the same location that you specified for the Script Feed Directory, Advisory Feed Directory and Video Feed Directory fields (located under the Administration link in WNE) during the WNE 4.1 installation. Alternately, if you will be using the Copy to Folder function in WNE, this field must be set to the same location that you specified for the Script Copy Directory and Video Copy Directory fields (located under the Administration link in WNE) during the WNE 4.1 installation. If the WNE files must be written to a specific folder on your FTP Server, then click Add (in the FTP Destination directories section) and enter the FTP folder name in the appropriate field. This is the location in which to store the Reuters files. This value must be relative to the FTP home directory (e.g. video\reuters). 6.

Select the Scanning tab of the Reuters FTP Suite Properties page and set the required values on as described below:

Ensure that the Transfer modified files checkbox is selected. Set the Periodically scan every field to 60 seconds so that FTP Suite checks for new or modified files every minute. 7.

Select the Transfer tab of the Reuters FTP Suite Properties page and set the required values on as described below:

Ensure that the Rename after transfer checkbox is not selected (unless you plan to rename files once they are transferred). Note: The Rename after transfer feature is very useful but can sometimes cause errors to occur when attempting to transfer an updated file with the same filename. Refer to the FTP Suite Rename after Transfer Option section of this document for more details before deciding whether to enable this feature. 8.

Select the Errors tab of the Reuters FTP Suite Properties page and ensure that the Ignore locked files checkbox is selected.

12. FTP Suite will then transfer more files or wait for a new or modified file.

13. Next, a shortcut to FTP Suite must be placed in the Startup folder to ensure that FTP Suite starts up automatically when the caching PC is restarted. If you are using Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\Reuters\FTP Suite folder (if this folder does not exist, create it).

14. Then, right-click on the FTPSuite.exe file and select Create Shortcut from the menu that appears. A shortcut called Shortcut to FTPSuite.exe will be created in the C:\Program Files\Reuters\FTP Suite folder.

15. Right click on Shortcut to FTPSuite.exe and select Cut from the menu.

16. Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder (where the other WNE related shortcuts should be) and paste Shortcut to FTPSuite.exe by right-clicking on it and selecting Paste from the menu

17. Once it has been copied there, right-click on Shortcut to FTPSuite.exe and select Properties from the menu. In the Target field, add a space after the FTPSuite\FTPSuite.exe value. Then, after the space you just added, enter the value you specified in the Title field in step 5 (in this example, the value in the Title field was WNEVideosAndScripts). Then, click OK.

Note: If the value in your Title field includes spaces, be sure to place double quotes around the title. WNE FTP Suite Configuration Guide

18. Exit FTP Suite and then double click on Shortcut to FTPSuite.exe in the C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder and confirm that FTP Suite starts up with the configuration created above.

Miscellaneous procedures and options FTP Suite Rename after Transfer Option The FTP Suite Rename after transfer checkbox option located on the Transfer tab (of the Reuters FTP Suite Properties page) is very useful. If this feature is enabled, FTP Suite will supply each file it is transferring with a temporary file name on the FTP Server and then rename the file on the FTP Server when the transfer is complete. For example, 200810131144EN-FILE-OASIS.mpg will be transferred to 200810131144EN-FILE-OASIS.001 and then renamed to 200810131144EN-FILE-OASIS.mpg. If the FTP transfer fails part way through, then enabling this option will guarantee there will not be an incomplete MPG on the FTP Server. Note: If you are using the FTP Suite rename feature, it is recommended you use v2.1.2.2 or higher of FTP Suite. Due to their configuration, some FTP Servers do not allow files to be renamed. For the file renaming feature to function as intended, the FTP account used will need to have delete or modify permissions (depending on the FTP server). If the FTP server is not configured correctly the rename will fail immediately once the file is uploaded (when the rename command is sent). If the file Rename after transfer option is required, it can be tested by copying a specific file (e.g., myftpsuitetest.txt) into the input directory used by FTP Suite. Confirm that FTP Suite has sent this file successfully. Then send the same file again and confirm that the file has been successfully transferred a second time. If no errors are reported by FTP Suite, then the Rename after transfer feature is working correctly. If FTP Suite encounters a problem uploading or renaming the file, it will generate an error message describing the issue. Depending on the information provided in the error message, verify that either your FTP server or FTP Suite configuration are correct.

Configuring a secondary FTP destination in FTP suite FTP Suite supports several different configuration options. One common requirement is to send videos to one FTP Server or destination folder and Scripts to another. This section explains how to configure two instances of FTP Suite. In this example, one instance sends Videos to a particular FTP Server and the other sends Scripts to a different FTP Server. This example assumes the primary configuration has already been set up. 1.

Select Reuters FTP Suite from the Start

2.

Click the Properties button on the FTP Suite status page.

3.

On the Properties page click the New button.

The new configuration will have all the same settings as the existing configuration except the value in the Title field. 4.

Enter an applicable value in the Title field (e.g., WNEVideos).

Then set the following fields accordingly: To change the value of the FTP Address for this configuration, select the current address and click Edit. Edit the address as needed and click OK. Ensure that the values in the Username and Password fields are correct. If required (e.g., if the WNE files must be written to a specific folder on your FTP Server), then click Add (in the FTP Destination directories section) and enter the FTP folder name in the appropriate field. This is the location in which to store the Reuters files. This value must be relative to the FTP home directory (e.g. video\reuters).

5.

Select the Scanning tab.

Change the value in the Filename to scan for field to *.mpg. Click OK. 6.

The FTP Suite Status Page is then displayed. The FTP Suite will only transfer files with a mpg extension.

7.

A shortcut for this secondary FTP configuration must then be created and placed in the startup group. Be sure that WNEVideos (or the name that you used for this configuration) is applied to the end of the value in the Target field for the shortcut (as described in step 17 above).

Note: To create an instance of FTP Suite which only transfers scripts, follow the instructions above, entering an appropriate title and remembering to enter the appropriate FTP details and *.xml in the Filename to scan for field n the Scanning tab.

Then create an appropriate shortcut to launch this instance of FTP Suite.

Troubleshooting This procedure is to test that the WNE PC is actually able to support FTP. This can be useful in troubleshooting the initial setup and FTP capability. The simplest way to troubleshoot FTP Suite problems is to start an FTP session from a command line on the Reuters WNE PC and try to transfer a file with the same credentials as specified for your FTP Suite. 1.

Use Notepad (or another application) to create a small text file called hello.txt and save the file in C:\temp.

2.

Launch a command line prompt (click Start

3.

From the command line enter the commands (shown in the screen capture below) and verify that the file can be transferred (if a FTP destination directory has been specified then use a cd command before the put command).

4.

Confirm that the hello.txt file has been placed in the appropriate folder on the FTP Server.
