Resumen 4 TECHNICAL – ECONOMICAL ANALYSIS OF FEASIBILITY OF IMPLEMENTING A SOLAR REFRIGERATION SYSTEM IN AN INDUSTRIAL USE BUILDING AND A TERTIARY USE BUILDING PLACED IN MADRID Author: Niebla García, Alicia. PROJECT SUMMARY The main objective of this project is to analyze from a technical and economical standpoint a solar refrigeration system by absorption in two applications, an office building and a wine cellar, both located in the Community of Madrid. It aims to satisfy the energy needs of cooling, heating and hot water for both buildings. To this end, the installation consists of a solar refrigeration system by absorption, a thermal solar energy collection system of low temperature and a supply energy system consists of a biomass boiler, because the collection system is not able to cover all energy needs. Notably, the absorption cycle is similar to a conventional reverse Rankine cycle, replacing the mechanical compressor by a thermal compressor, in which the compression process is performed by a pump. To this end, the refrigerant is absorbed in a transport solution (to cross the pump in liquid state). Once they has crossed the pump, both fluids are separated in the generator providing heat, so that the refrigerant obtained goes to the condenser to continue the conventional Rankine cycle. Thus, the absorption machine is fed by the hot water from solar accumulators, which accumulate at a temperature of 60 ºC the hot water through a heat exchanger, where the heat transfer fluid (water and antifreeze) from the solar collector gives up its heat to the hot water of the accumulators. So, if the required temperature is equal or less than this value, it will be sent directly to the point of consumption (hot water,

Resumen 5 heating). Otherwise, as in the case of the absorption machine, the water at 60 º C will be sent previously to the biomass boiler to increase the temperature to the point that it is necessary. Therefore, the biomass boiler acts as a support system. So, it will allow increasing the water temperature to the required temperature in the generator of the absorption machine for its operation. Also, it will allow covering heating needs in winter and hot water needs over the year, when solar energy is not able to cover them totally. On the other hand, we have calculated the energy needs for cooling (summer only), energy needs for heating (winter only) and the energy needs of hot water (all year). The calculation of the absorption machine power has been determined considering the air conditioning energy requirements of each application, being 1338 KW for the office building and 176 KW for the wine cellar. The calculation of the biomass boilers power has been made taking the worst case (maximum needs). In this way, the boiler will allow in any case raise the temperature so that the absorption machine can run in its optimal regime. Thus, in the case of the office building the power is 2200 KW and in the wine cellar 307 KW. The solar fraction calculation has been performed using F-Chart method. The collection area of the office building is 1300 m2 and 1,500 m2 for the wine cellar. The solar cover is 8.4% for the office building and 40% for wine cellar. Therefore, the installation consists of: solar collection system (collectors, accumulators, etc.), cooling system (absorption machine, cooling tower, etc.) and an auxiliary heating system (boiler biomass). In terms of environmental impact, it has been calculated the amount of CO2 that does not emit because the use of the absorption system and the biomass boiler instead of the mechanical compression chiller and gas boiler, resulting an annual amount of CO2 that is left to emit of 3475 tonnes per year in the office building and 429, 5 tons per year in the wine cellar. The installation overall budget of the office building amounts to € 1,206,573.24 and the wine cellar to € 1,137,545.26, being respectively 75 % and 90 % due to the solar collection system. It has been carried out a comparative economic analysis between: solar refrigeration system with absorption and biomass boiler (installation analyzed during the project)

Resumen 6 and a conventional cooling system (mechanical compression chiller) and biomass boiler. Remarkably, despite the absorption - solar installation is more expensive than conventional, the operating cost of the solar - absorption system is practically free (excluding biomass) for what is expected to have savings compared to the conventional chiller, and therefore the most initial investment will be amortized. Since the heating and hot water supply will be done in both cases with the biomass boiler, the economic analysis will be focus on taking into consideration only cooling needs (summer). For each application we consider two scenes, a neutral scene and an optimistic scene. It has also been made a sensitivity analysis for different alternatives, such as reducing the price of the collectors or their performance, increasing biomass ICV (inferior calorific value), replacement of the collection system by the biomass boiler, etc. For most scenes and alternatives listed above, it has been obtained values of the Net Present Value (NPV) negative, so this plant is not profitable, due mainly to the high cost of solar collectors. The only case in which the installation is profitable is in the wine cellar, both for the neutral and optimistic scene, obtaining respective values of NPV of € 160,874.6 and € 394,317.6. One possible solution to make the installation profitable would be using residual heat "free" from other processes. On the other hand, it is important to note that this installation has pros because it is an alternative that does not involve electricity consumption and it belongs to the field of renewable energies, so that it does not produce environmental impact and allows performing sustainable development.
