FLORIDA STATE VS. MINNESOTA – THE LAST MEETING Maurice Walker made six free throws in overtime, and Minnesota held off Florida State 67-64 to reach the NIT title game at Madison Square Garden on April 1, 2014. Austin Hollins and DeAndre Mathieu scored 17 points apiece for the Golden Gophers who overcame Devon Bookert’s tying 3-pointer at the end of regulation. Florida State was led by a pair of seniors who played their final college game. Okaro White had 16 points and 12 rebounds for the top-seeded Seminoles. Reserve guard Ian Miller also scored 16 and missed a 3-pont shot at the overtime buzzer that would have tied it. Bookert scored 13 points for Florida State, including its last seven in regulation and first two in the extra session. The Gophers held on despite going 0-for-5 from the field in OT. Florida State trailed by 15 with 6:30 left in the opening half before chipping away at the deficit. Thomas tied it at 45 on a free throw with 8:16 remaining in regulation, but Austin Hollins countered with a 3-pointer to put Minnesota back in front. White hit two free throws, made a basket inside and then gave the Seminoles their first lead at 51-50 on two foul shots with 4:10 to play in the second half. But the Gophers scored the next two baskets and were up 60-57 with 7.4 seconds left when Malik Smith went to the foul line with a chance to just about seal it. He missed both shots, and Bookert dribbled up the court, cut to his right and drained a trey that tied it at 60 with 0.3 seconds left. Quoting Florida State Men’s Basketball “The possibility of a more experienced, seasoned, locked-in version of (Florida State’s) 2015-16 hyper talented, balldominant star (Dwayne Bacon) is tantalizing.” Eamonn Brennan ESPN “Looking for an under-the-radar newcomer in the ACC? Try Florida State’s Braian Angola-Rodas. The 6-6 wing averaged 21.4 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 4.3 assists last season in junior-college and is the favorite to replace Malik Beasley in the Seminoles' starting lineup. Jon Rothstein CBS Sports “Florida State incoming freshman Jonathan Isaac – the lanky forward will give Leonard Hamilton another incredibly athletic payer for the rotation.” Jeff Fischel ACC Digital Network “Dwayne Bacon – I see him taking a huge leap forward. Bacon could have been a first round pick based on potential this year – next year he’ll have the proof of performance to back it up.” Jeff Fischel ACC Digital Network “Jonathan Isaac's potential, on both ends of the floor, is limitless.” Eamonn Brannon ESPN.com “Dwayne Bacon resisted the urge to turn pro after one year and should reap the benefits as the featured scorer in the Seminoles' offense this season.” C.L. Brown ESPN.com “Jonathan Isaac is a super tall, super skinny small forward who can shoot.” Chad Ford ESPN “Florida State has the ingredients to be special. Jonathan Isaac might be the most athletically gifted freshman in the country. Pairing that big man with backcourt studs Dwayne Bacon and Xavier Rathan-Mayes will give the Seminoles one of the best primary trios in the ACC.” Kerry Miller Bleacher Report “Leonard Hamilton lost Malik Beasley to the NBA draft, but that departure didn't ruin Florida State's plans for 2016-17. Dwayne Bacon (15.8 PPG) and Xavier Rathan-Mayes (11.8 PPG) are both back. And Jonathan Isaac, a 6-10 freshman forward, is a projected lottery pick for the 2017 NBA draft. Trent Forrest is a top-50 player, too. Hamilton, again, has a team that will play fast.” Myron Medcalf ESPN.com “Terance Mann is an interior player who can score from close and rebound well.” Michael Bradley Lindy’s Preview Magazine

Game 3 -- Florida State 100, Winthrop 86 TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Michael Ojo recorded the first doubledouble of his career -- 13 points and 10 rebounds (both career highs) -- and Christ Koumadje had a career high 14 points as Florida State defeated Winthrop 100-86. Ojo, a 7-foot-1 senior center, missed last season due to a knee injury. Nine of his points came from the line, where he has struggled in the past. Ojo made only 40.2 percent of his foul shots his first three years but was 9 of 12 and is making 75 percent (12 of 16) for the season. Koumadje, a 7-foot-4 sophomore who is the tallest player in Seminoles’ history, got the first double-digit scoring game of his career as he was 7 of 8 from the field. During a 10-0 run in the first half that allowed FSU to take a 31-19 lead, he had a pair of alley-oop dunks off assists by Rathan-Mayes and Dwayne Bacon. Dwayne Bacon led the Seminoles with 15 points while Jonathan Isaac added 14 and Braian Angola-Rodas 11. The combination of Ojo and Koumadje allowed the Seminoles to have a 50-32 points-inthe-paint advantage. Winthrop steadily whittled down the lead and got within 58-54 five minutes into the second half on a Fisher free throw before FSU went on a 9-0 run. Florida State 100, Winthrop 86 Donald L. Game 4 -- Florida State 100, Detroit Mercy 71

Temple 89, Florida State 86 Barclays Center Nov. 24, 2016

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State accomplished something on Sunday that hasn’t happened in Leonard Hamilton’s 29 seasons and 879 games as a college coach -- hit triple digits in consecutive games. The Seminoles rolled to a 100-71 victory over Detroit Mercy as they were 40 of 70 from the field and had five players in double figures. It is the first time since December of 1996 -- against Jacksonville and Tennessee State -- that FSU has scored 100 or more in back-to-back games. It is the 15th time -- and seventh in 15 seasons at Florida State -- that a Hamilton team has reached the century mark. He accomplished it six times in four seasons at Oklahoma State and twice in 10 years at Miami. Dwayne Bacon led the Seminoles (4-0) with 22 points and freshman Jonathan Isaac got his first double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Terrance Mann (11), Xavier Rathan-Mayes (10) and Trent Forrest also scored in double figures. FSU scored 100 points despite making just 1 of 14 3-pointers. They were 39 of 56 inside the perimeter and had a huge 78-26 advantage on points in the paint. A lot of the Seminoles’ paint points came in the transition game as they had 20 fast-break points. Florida State led 48-35 at halftime before Detroit Mercy closed within eight (64-56) with 13:13 remaining on a Chris Jenkins jumper. The Seminoles then put it out of reach with a 32-4 run over an eight-minute span. At one point it was a 22-2 run as they hit 11 straight from the field.

That was followed by Rose’s putback, Enechionyia’s lay-in, two made free throws by Alston, and consecutive three’s from Alston and Damion Moore. The Owls were able to extend their advantage to 85-80 after Enechionyia’s made 3 with 3:18 left. But Trent Forrest’s lay-in with 77 seconds cut the deficit to one, 87-86. Florida State had a chance to win, but Isaac air-balled a layup attempt with four seconds left. Rose’s two free throws sealed the win.

Brooklyn, N.Y. – Dwayne Bacon scored 17 points to lead Florida State to a 72-61 win over Illinois in the third-place game of the NIT Season Tip-Off. Jonathan Isaac had 15 points and seven rebounds. EXCELLING OFF THE COURT Bacon, men’s basketball team enjoy giving back to the community

not know much about the student-athletes they cheer for when they wear the garnet and gold. As Bacon’s playing stature continues to grow nationally, he receives increased attention and recognition, which in turn creates a bigger fan base. That means there are children of all ages looking up to him as a role model. “Dwayne Bacon is one of the best student-athletes at Florida State to be put in the position of a role model,” said Derrick Coles, the Director of Student Athlete Development for the FSU Department of Athletics. “Dwayne has shown that he has the maturity to be a standout leader and role model who everyone can look up to. He does not say, ‘I have to go do this community service’ — he wants to be out in the community.” “I love to see the spark in the children’s eyes and the excitement on their faces when a student-athlete from Florida State walks into their classroom,” Bacon said. While pondering whether to enter the NBA Draft or return for another year as a Seminole last spring, Bacon made his decision public to a group of elementary school students in Tallahassee. “Before he told myself and coaches, and outside of his family, he told a bunch of fourth graders at Gilchrist Elementary that he had decided to stay at Florida State,” Coles said. It is the little actions that a person displays that make them a great role model. Bacon did not have to share his decision with the fourth grade class at Gilchrist Elementary, but he wanted to because he cares about this community and he cares about Florida State. Entering his second season at Florida State, Bacon has already accomplished so much and continues to give of himself every day. On and off the court, Bacon exemplifies what it means to be a true Seminole and a positive role model.

eing a collegiate athlete comes with many responsibilities. Student-athletes have to attend practices, participate in team workouts, travel for games and work hard in the classroom. Among the greatest responsibilities any college athlete has is the responsibility to his or her local community and being a positive role model. “Giving back to our fans in the community is one of the cornerstones of our program,” said Florida State men’s basketball coach Leonard Hamilton. “All of our players are deeply committed to helping the people of our community.” Among the Seminoles’ most committed players is Dwayne Bacon. The sophomore guard from Lakeland, Florida, has always had an interest in giving back to his community. “It is important to be a leader in the community and to give back to the people who give so much of themselves to our team,” Bacon said. Bacon has been nominated for the Allstate National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Good Works Team Award, which recognizes players who are actively involved in and committed to working with charitable organizations. Bacon has participated in the highest number of community service activities and has accumulated the most community service hours among all male student-athletes at Florida State. “We love our fans, and we all feel it is important to get to know them and for them to get to know us,” Bacon said. Fans do not generally get a glimpse into the everyday lives of student-athletes, nor do they witness their daily triumphs and challenges. What they see is each one of them giving their all to the sport they love. Most fans do 44

TERANCE MANN A leader among Seminole leaders

By Hope Carpinello Florida State Sports Information Student Assistant

“Terance is one of our leaders because he knows his actions affect how people view our team,” Hamilton said. “For Terance to embrace community service as much as he has says a lot about him as a person and about his own family. He comes from a wonderful, close-knit family that has instilled in him a deep appreciation for giving back.” In addition to his role on the men’s basketball team, Mann is an active member in several student-athlete organizations, including the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and leadership programs REAL Men (Reliable Educated Approachable Leaders) and LYFE (Leaders Yearning for Excellence). “REAL Men focuses on social issues that face male student-athletes — from picking the right friends to preparing and knowing how to network, to using their platform to build yourself and be an assistant to others,” Assistant Director of Student Service Derrick Coles said. “Terance has been very vocal in our meetings, sharing his experiences and insights. He has so much potential to be one of the guys that becomes remembered not just for his on-the-court accomplishments, but his off-the-court endeavors [as well].” Mann also has been recognized as a key service leader in Florida State’s LYFE program, where he received the “Mr. Outreach Award” as a freshman. “Receiving that award made me realize that I didn’t know how much I was actually doing for the community,” Mann said. “It was nice to win the award and to know the impact I was making. I don’t do it for the awards. Anyone could have won it. We all were out there doing community service in LYFE It was a big deal.” LYFE is a program that is dedicated to preparing student-athletes for life after graduation by increasing academic motivation and success as well as potential career opportunities and this year. “Terance embodies the ideals and characteristics we want all of our student-athletes to exhibit every day,” Assistant Athletics Director for Student Athlete Services Dr. John Lata said. “He inspires his teammates on a daily basis by his selflessness and commitment to service.” Even with the start of basketball season, Mann continues to stay plugged in to his leadership role as a student-athlete mentor for current FSU freshmen. “The high standards Terance sets for himself, in terms of giving back, help guide his teammates and other student-athletes,” Lata said. “We are proud of how he represents himself, his family, and Florida State University.”

S

ophomore Terance Mann, a guard on the Florida State basketball team, is quickly becoming one of the Seminoles’ most respected leaders. He has raised the bar on his expectations for his sophomore season after being a member of Florida State’s renowned recruiting class in 2015. The spotlight of being a collegiate athlete comes with a great amount of responsibility both on and off the court — something Mann learned early in his life. He grew up watching his mother, a college basketball coach, encourage her players to participate in community outreach efforts. Through such efforts, Mann saw firsthand the significant impact student-athletes can make on their communities. “When I got to high school, my coach was really big on community service. He would always take us places to play basketball with kids,” Mann said. “He always taught us that these kids look up to us.” That powerful lesson has been the reason for his constant involvement in his community. For Mann, community service isn’t looked at as a chore, but an opportunity to be positive role model. “I know that a lot of people look up to athletes around this community,” Mann said. “Going out and showing kids that we are normal people just like them is a big deal. Some people are quick to say things like, ‘Oh well, they are just athletes and they don’t care about anything or anyone else,’ and that’s absolutely not true. Showing the community we are just like them really helps us to be better people and helps our community.” Last season, the Florida State men’s basketball team partnered with the Early Learning Coalition of the Big Bend in Coaching for Literacy, a program designed to raise awareness about illiteracy in America and provide financial support to raise funds for effective local literacy programs. “I am so proud when our players support our community and give back to the people who mean so much to our program.” Seminole head coach Leonard Hamilton said. “Our players enjoy meeting and interacting with children of all ages because they know that they are role models.” The Coaching for Literacy event was held at The Florida State University Children’s Center, where members of the team, including Mann, read the “Cat in the Hat” to children on Dr. Seuss Day. 44
