2

What is Residential Aged Care?

Residential aged care provides accommodation, care and services for older people who are no longer able to live at home without assistance. Reasons can include: deterioration in health, disability, emergency or your carer or family are no longer able to look after your needs. TriCare’s aged care residences can offer either permanent or short-term respite care and provide the assistance you need, from day to day tasks and personal care, right through to 24-hour nursing care. If you don’t require this level of care you may want to consider one of TriCare’s retirement communities or our home care services. Retirement communities offer independent living for active retiree’s over the age of 65 with accommodation options including independent living units and/or serviced apartments. TriCare’s home care provides assistance with day to day household and personal tasks and are available on the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane South and the Logan River Valley. What types of care are available? Respite Care Respite care is short term residency for low or high care clients, which can allow the primary carer a much needed break. It may be used on a planned or emergency basis to help with carer stress, illness, holidays or unexpected unavailability of the carer. Respite services are available for up to 63 days in any financial year.

Low Care Permanent residency, also referred to as hostel accommodation offers assistance with daily living activities such as showering, toileting, all meals, dressing, moving around, rehabilitation support, and assistance in obtaining health and therapy services. Low care residents are able to remain at the residence as their care needs increase.

High Care Permanent residency sometimes referred to as Nursing Home care offers care and support with all daily activities plus mobility equipment, medication assistance, all meals, personal care items, incontinence management and assistance with access to other health services.

Secure Dementia Care 4

Some TriCare residences are able to offer care and services for residents who have special needs, such as those with dementia. Our policy, where possible, is to allow wandering residents the freedom to move about safely without restraint.

There are 5 steps to consider when you, a family member or friend need to move into an aged care residence. These steps include whether you are eligible and how to go about selecting the right facility. Once you have found a suitable facility, the next step is understanding how much you can expect to pay, how to apply and what you should consider during the move.

5

6

Step 1: Are you eligible for residential aged care?

To find out if you are eligible for residential aged care you will need to be assessed by an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT). Your local doctor, hospital or health centre will be able to refer you to the closest ACAT; alternatively you can contact them direct. Once ACAT has determined you are eligible for residential aged care, either permanently or on a respite basis, you can then start the process of finding an appropriate aged care residence. For more information and for a list of Aged Care Assessment Teams in your area please visit tricare.com.au

7

Step 2: How do you choose the right facility?

Once you have been assessed as requiring either a low level or high level of care you can start the process of finding a suitable aged care residence. All facilities will have a very different feel and it is important, when making your decision, that you are comfortable with the management, presentation and staff at that facility. You will also need to consider what type of accommodation you require as this will affect the cost and the services that you will receive.

8

Another factor to consider when choosing an aged care residence is whether or not the facility is accredited. The purpose of accreditation is to ensure a consistently high level of service and care is provided to residents. All TriCare residences are fully accredited, meeting the quality standards set by the Australian Government. You can be assured that our systems and procedures are among the best in the industry, and deliver a quality, professional service to all our residents.

Your choices

Extra Services

Standard

You have two choices when selecting residential aged care accommodation: standard or extra services.

Standard Standard accommodation at TriCare includes a range of single and shared rooms in a variety of comfortable formats, plus communal areas offering residents privacy when needed and the joy of social interaction if preferred. All residents in standard accommodation are encouraged to be part of our regular activity programmes.

Extra Services Residents in our extra service suites will receive a higher standard of accommodation and a greater range of services. Examples of additional services vary at each facility but may include greater menu choice, wine and beer with meals, valet laundry service and newspapers each morning. Residents in extra service suites are required to pay an Accommodation Bond. Residents in both standard and extra service rooms receive the same high quality care and support services.

Step 3: How much can you expect to pay? Glossary of Terms Basic Daily Care Fee: This fee is set by the Commonwealth Government at 84% of the Standard Aged Pension. The Basic Daily Care Fee is a contribution towards daily living costs such as meals, cleaning, laundry, heating and nursing care. Income Tested Fee: The Australian Government asks Aged Care Residents to pay a further contribution towards the cost of their care relative to their capacity to do so. Centrelink/DVA determines the income tested fee for all residents and is based entirely on your assessable income. TriCare is required to collect this fee which partially subsidises the Government’s contribution to care. Accommodation Charge: An Accommodation Charge is a daily amount you may be asked to pay if you are in a high care standard room. The maximum amount depends on the amount of your assessable assets and is calculated by the Department of Health & Ageing. Accommodation Bond: Accommodation Bonds are used by Aged Care Providers to build and improve the quality of buildings and services provided. There is no fixed amount for an Accommodation Bond, however the Aged Care Act stipulates a number of conditions. A monthly retention amount will be deducted for no more than five years, the balance of the bond will then be refunded to you upon leaving the aged care residence. The retention amount is determined by the Department of Health and Ageing. Extra Service Fee: The Extra Service Fee covers the provision of additional services as specified in the Extra Service Schedule and varies depending on the services offered.

16

Please note: Actual fees will vary depending on your individual financial circumstances. For more information please refer to the Fees and Charges sheets which will be provided as part of the application pack. Application packs can be obtained from each individual TriCare residence.

Residents will be asked to pay fees which contribute toward accommodation, services and care. The Commonwealth Government has enacted protections to ensure that residential aged care is affordable for all Australians, regardless of their financial situation. Specific dollar amounts have not been included in this brochure as they are subject to change – for current fees please refer to our Fees and Charges sheets.

Step 5: What do you need to know about moving and settling in? Residential Care Agreement You will be offered a formal Residential Care Agreement when a place becomes available. The Residential Care Agreement specifies the care and services we will provide and your rights and responsibilities while staying in the residence. It will also set out fees and charges and any others matters negotiated between us.

What residents should bring? Personal Possessions: Residents are strongly encouraged to bring personal items such as bedspreads, photographs, pictures and other items which will help make their new room feel like home. Residents should bring a range of clothing which they enjoy wearing and provide comfort in all seasons. All clothing must be labelled; your facility can assist in labelling your clothes with labels that don’t fade or fall off. It is recommended that family or friends launder delicate and woollen clothing to ensure they are not damaged. Furniture: It is best to view the room first and seek approval from management staff at the residence with regards to which furniture to bring. TriCare adhere’s to Workplace Health and Safety legislation to ensure that a resident will be safe in their room and all exits and walkways are clear. Medication: Prior to admission you will be asked to arrange for your GP to complete a form which will inform us and our contracted pharmacy of all your medication requirements. TriCare has a contracted Pharmacy to supply medications ensuring you have access to the best possible pricing and that consistency in delivery is maintained. Upon admission, bring any current prescribed medications with you and hand them to the Registered Nurse. Medications prescribed by your medical practitioner will be administered by qualified staff in accordance with your doctor’s instructions. Support from Family and Friends: Moving home for most people, regardless of your age, can be stressful and often difficult. It is very beneficial for you to have family and friends visiting often, especially in the first few months to assist you in settling into your new home. We also encourage friends and family to join in any activities at the facility to help you meet other residents.

Frequently Asked Questions? Is my Accommodation Bond secure?

Can I have my own room?

The Government has legislated prudential arrangements to ensure the safeguarding of Residents Accommodation Bonds. These regulations specify matters such as how Bond monies can be used and time frames for the refunding of Bonds. The Australian Government guarantees your Accommodation Bond. This means that you can be 100 per cent certain that your Bond balance entitlement (including any interest that has accrued on the Bond balance) will be repaid if your provider becomes bankrupt or insolvent.

All TriCare facilities have a number of single rooms which are allocated on an ‘as needs’ basis taking into account individual residents’ care needs and preferences.

What happens with Medication?

Residents and families have access to a monthly newsletter listing the various activities available. They include bingo, games, news reading, outings, community visitors, concerts and church services. We welcome your input into the activities program – our programs work best with your feedback.

Medications prescribed by Doctors are administered in accordance with State Drugs and Poisons legislation. Do you have accommodation for couples? Yes-twin share rooms are available at some sites. Both occupants must have a valid ACAT assessment. Can you cater for my special diet? All TriCare residences are able to cater for special dietary needs including diabetic, gluten free, soft food, residents with allergies and even those with personal preferences, such as vegetarian or specific cultural requirements. All TriCare meals are specially designed by our dieticians to ensure they provide a nutritious and healthy diet for our residents.

Can I bring my pet/s? Generally it is not possible to bring pets; however individual requests can be made and decided mutually between the resident and management. What activities are available for residents?

Can we still use our own doctor? Yes, provided your doctor is prepared to attend the facility as required. What are the visiting hours? There are no fixed visiting hours but generally we would expect the vast majority of visits to occur between 7.00 am and 9.00 pm. Visitors are asked to respect the privacy of other residents at all times.
