Happy New Year!!!!!!! And now that we won the Battle of the Bluegrass, the year has gotten off on the right start!!!!!!!! It’s hard to comprehend that on February 1, I will have been overseeing the University Club operations for 22 years. One never knows where the journey is going to take them until one travels down the road. You should know how grateful and fortunate my wife and I feel about making the decision to move to Louisville in 1996. Managing this Club has been such a tremendous opportunity. Thank you for adopting me and my family into the Great Cardinal Nation. I feel blessed to have the staff that surrounds me. Hardly a day goes by that I don’t receive a compliment from you all as to how well they treated you. Our staff will begin the new year by offering you more affordable lunch promotions. The new promotions will be part of a new ala carte menu. Watch for $10.00 Tuesdays. We will offer choices of sandwiches or entrée salads, soft drink, and cookies, inclusive of service and tax for a total price of $10.00. Another new option consists of a daily Cardinal Comfort Cuisine with eight scrumptious meals to select from along with a soft drink, priced at $8.00 plus service and tax. Vegetarians, look for our new selections on our daily buffet. Most of you know that the University Club is a 501-C3 (not for profit) organization. This means donations can be made to the Club and the donor can receive a tax deduction. Many of you have supported the Club since we opened in 1991 and established family traditions here. Please consider making a donation that would go to continue your legacy with the Club. There are many needs for updates as well as opportunities for your donation to be recognized within the Club. We have several rooms that would love to have your name on them. What a way to carry on your legacy forever. This Club’s most valued asset is the membership. We need you to contact Linda Johnson about family, friends and corporate partners that are perspective members; and help us grow our membership. Watch for our weekly email blasts to keep you up to date. If we don’t have your email address please forward it to Linda Johnson at linda. johnson @louisville.edu. Hope your Holiday Season left you safe, healthy and happy. Bill P.S. MEET THE PROFESSOR

THE LIBERAL STUDIES PROJECT PRESENTS A MONTHLY LUNCH & LECTURE SERIES

PROFESSOR STEVEN BROOKE Thursday, January 12, 2017 at 12 p.m. Why is the Muslim Brotherhood so Good at Winning Elections in the Middle East? Steven Brooke, Professor of Political Science, will discuss why Islamist parties so consistently outperformed their opponents in the democratic elections that followed the Arab Spring. Nowhere was this more prominent than in Egypt, where the Muslim Brotherhood won five straight elections and plebiscites, only to be dislodged by a military coup in the Summer of 2013. Dr. Brooke will explain the sources of this “Islamist advantage” by drawing on his own fieldwork in Egypt, original surveys of Egyptians, and new internet-based geographic data.

PROFESSOR JOHN GIBSON Thursday, February 2, 2017 at 12 p.m. Art and “Terrible Truth” John Gibson, Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Commonwealth Center for Humanities and Society, will discuss why in the context of art, but usually not in life, we often take intense delight in viewing the tragic, traumatic, disgusting, and horrible. On basic political and ethical grounds, is it permissible to turn the abject and awful into an object of aesthetic pleasure? What does our appreciation of such art say about us and our sense of the world we inhabit? Contrary to appearances, this will be an optimistic talk, and will highlight ways in which literature, painting and music can make life tolerable in the act of revealing it at its worst.

PROFESSOR ANN C. HALL Thursday, March 2, 2017 at 12 p.m. Harold Pinter, Robin Williams, Somnabulants, and Galloping Horses Ann C. Hall, is Chair of Comparative Humanities, with research interests in drama, popular culture, and film. She also writes plays, poems, and short stories. Dr. Hall will discuss Harold Pinter’s play A Kind of Alaska (1982) and Robin Williams’s film Awakenings (1990), both based on Oliver Sacks’s work with catatonic patients. The discussion will lead to a greater understanding of time, gender, and the different ways theatre and film represent time. The horses? Well, you’ll have to attend!

Dr. Andrea Gaughan and Dr. Forrest Stevens Thursday, April 13, 2017 at 12 p.m. From People to Pixels: Mapping Global Population Patterns with the WorldPop Project

Andrea Gaughan and Forrest Stevens, Professors of Geography and Geosciences, received Gates Foundation grant to work on their WorldPop project that generates open source human population maps. Contemporary, fine spatial scale, gridded population data is a crucial component for research across disciplines. Such data is necessary for understanding the ‘now’ of hazard risk and mitigation management, health and disease modelling, economic, environmental, and sustainability related work. The maps have been broadly adopted by international and government agencies for effective policy, planning, and interventions where a strong foundation of evidence is needed.
