SPEAKING AT LMU: JEFF FORBES, NSF PROGRAM DIRECTOR The National Science Foundation is rethinking how its programs can best support science & engineering education. A particular focus has been initiatives that support undergraduate STEM education such as the Improving Undergraduate STEM Education (IUSE) program.
3rd Quarter Proposals Are Up The dollar value of applications in the third quarter skyrocketed due to multiple submission to the NSF’s Discover Research K-12 program in December. So far in FY 2014, LMU faculty and staff have submitted over $18 million and received over $3.8 million in external support.
On Friday, March 14, Dr. Jeff Forbes, Program Director in the Division of Computer and Jeff Forbes, Network Systems, will NSF Program Director update the LMU community on recent developments at the NSF. He will also lead a workshop to provide tips on writing effective NSF grant proposals and conduct a mock proposal review. Hosted by Stephanie August, Department of Computer Science, and Alice Martini-Doyle, ORSP, the event takes place in the William H. Hannon Library starting at 9:00am. Please contact the ORSP for more information at
[email protected] or x84599.
NSF GRANT TRANSFER When Thomas Laurent joined the department of Mathematics as an Assistant Professor this past year, he brought something with him: an award from the National Science Foundation. Prof. Laurent’s work focuses on “non-local interaction equations and their application Thomas Laurent, Assistant to collective motion in Professor of Mathematics biology.” Under the award, Prof. Laurent studies mathematical models of collective behavior in groups of individuals such as swarms of insects, flocks of birds, and colonies of bacteria. Designed to attract undergraduate students toward the field of applied mathematics, the project showcases novel problems arising in collective motion in biology. Welcome to LMU.
Coming Up: Undergraduate Research Symposium The Sixth Annual LMU Undergraduate Research Symposium takes place Saturday, March 29th, 2014. Did you know that in 2013, over $600,000 dollars from externally sponsored projects went directly to support student research and work? This year there will be 140 posters, 81 oral presentations, 5 films, 4 panels and 2 performing arts exhibited. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Casey Marsella at
[email protected].
