Requirements for applicants to the Non-Medical Prescribing (V300) courses: P44050 and U46373 at Oxford Brookes University (OBU) as agreed by South Central and South West Non-Medical Prescribing (NMP) Leads and OBU as directed by the NMC. It is a requirement of the South Central and South West Strategic Health Authority (SHA) that all applications to Higher Education Institutes (HEI’s) are ‘signed off’ by the Trust Education Lead and Non-Medical Prescribing Lead before they are considered for a place on the Non-Medical Prescribing (V300) course at Oxford Brookes University (OBU). The following information has been developed to ensure this process is efficient and that applicants put forward by the Trusts meet the requirements for the Non-Medical Prescribing (V300) courses as set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), Health Professions Council (HPC) and Department of Health (DH). The Roles and Responsibilities of the Practitioner, Line Manager, Non-Medical Prescribing Leads, Trust Education Leads and Oxford Brookes University (HEI) in this process can be found in Appendices 1 and 2. The Non-Medical Prescribing (NMP) Course at Oxford Brookes University is offered at two levels: Honours degree level (Level 6) and Masters level (Level 7). Both courses provide a programme of preparation for registered nurses and midwives to prescribe safely and competently as independent prescribers. The programme also includes preparation for the role of Supplementary Prescribing by Nurses, Chiropodists/Podiatrists, Physiotherapists and Radiographers within the NHS in England. The course introduces pharmacology, legal and ethical prescribing, interpersonal skills and quality assurance aspects of prescribing. These are underpinned by reflection on the practitioners own experience, evaluation of their performance and application of theory to practice. It also enables participants to be aware of current developments within non-medical prescribing in the UK. The Non-Medical Prescribing Course is delivered using a blended learning approach, which consists of 15 taught days throughout the semester. This is supported by a workbook and access to the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). The workbook, in conjunction with the VLE, will lead the practitioner through a series of structured learning exercises, which are supported by online discussion with tutors and other students on the course. These will take approximately 12 complete days to complete and it is recommended that the practitioner plans to do this throughout the duration of the course. The practitioner is also required to complete 12 days (84 hours) of educationally-led practice, supervised by a designated medical practitioner. The criteria for taking on the role of Medical Supervisor as recommended by the Department of Health the Medical Supervisor can be found in Appendix 3. Teaching takes place at our Marston Road site, Oxford in Semester 1 and 2 and is normally completed within a period of six months. Applications are direct to the University through the Programme Administrator. There are significant differences between the academic requirements for the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. If the applicant has not previously studied at postgraduate level and considers themselves eligible, they would be advised to discuss their intentions with the Course Leader Angela Harper ([email protected]) before proceeding with their application. Once they have completed the application process and have been accepted onto the course, they cannot transfer to another academic level.
