REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH AUGUST 2016

SOME THINGS ARE CHANGING AT THE GATEWAY. We have some new goals, to say the least. And we have a long way to go, but honestly, we’re pretty excited about it. We want to give our visitors a reason to find themselves in a part of Salt Lake City that’s been aching to come back to life, giving them an eclectic mix of restaurants dreamed up by the most renowned local chefs, and an upgraded shopping experience seven days a week. We want to offer an always-full calendar of dynamic events: music, outdoor movies, beer tastings, Farmer’s Markets, and more—so that The Gateway is always alive, always active, and always reflecting something important back to the people here. We’re bringing in one of the most unique four-star boutique hotels this side of the Rockies, so locals can mix with out-of-towners to share a part of this city that we can all be proud to call our own. And we want to create a clean, modern canvas, property-wide, so that we can showcase an eclectic collection of multi-medium public artistry to represent some of the things that matter most to us all: community, creativity, and contentment.

And we want you to join us.

i. Background + introduction Opened in 2002 to dovetail with the Olympic Games, The Gateway is an eclectic, mixed-use shopping destination located in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City. With over 80 unique shops, restaurants, and amenities, there's something for everyone at The Gateway (with more to come!). Some of our amenities include Wiseguys Comedy Club, Larry H. Miller Megaplex Theatre, The Depot, Discovery Gateway Children's Museum, and Clark Planetarium—and a neighbor to the Utah Jazz Vivint Smart Home Arena and Temple Square. This year, under new ownership, we’re kicking off The Gateway 2.0—with art as a key ingredient.

ii. project overview The Gateway (with Vestar) is collaborating with artists and arts councils to submit to its newest initative to display, promote, and exhibit public art of all mediums in several locations at The Gateway. We invite artists to stretch creativity to interpret the spaces proposed. Our goals are to: Improve the overall aesthetic of The Gateway for visitors, residents, and office workers. In conjunction with several revitalization efforts, we want to offer a home for a range of unique public art to Salt Lake City, as a place to celebrate creativity, community, and urban identity. Join other local efforts to generate interest and awareness of public art in Salt Lake City. Promote and showcase a range of different artists and mediums from the artist community. To reach and resonate with our audience: young professionals and urbanites who live, work, and play in the downtown area. Ultimately, create a unique, eclectic-yet-cohesive environment of compelling and unexpected moments of artwork, inspired by interpretation of our city, our space, the brand, heritage, and culture. (Think wall murals, vacant store installations, sculpture, functional art, experiential, digital display, and beyond.)

iii. eligibility Local and national professional artists or artist-led teams are eligible to apply. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, and have successfully managed and completed at least one (1) similar commision project with a project equal to or greater than $1,000.

iv. submission guidelines The following submission guidelines and requirements apply to this RFP: This call is open to artists who have previous experience in large-scale indoor or outdoor design. Artists must provide previous samples of work to illustrate style, qualifications, and experience. Artists should provide any other information relevant to the ensured success of their project. Final artwork must be ready to install (or in some cases deliver) by November 2016 at the latest.

v. the vision + what we’re looking for Our goal is to give Salt Lake City, and our visitors, and ourselves something to be proud of and excited about: a community-driven space conducive expression, creativity, entertainment, and socialization. Selected artists will develop indoor and/or outdoor public artwork to display at The Gateway. This site-specific work should represent an interpretation of the vison. In this document, we identify a few key areas which we believe will offer a unique, exquisite canvas for an artist to interpret. We also invite you to explore other areas not called out here, to propose any thoughts or ideas to add something to our space. We invite you to come visit! Walk around. Bring us any of your ideas. We want to fill our space with some unexpected, unique moments of art for visitors to experience in their own way. Help us find them.

vi. rfp + project timeline If you’re interested in applying for one or more of the areas, please provide 4-8 samples that best demonstrate your work and what you wish to have represented at The Gateway. Give us a breakdown of your concept, your medium, budget, timeline... basically, what it’ll take for you to get this dones successfully. Those interested must submit applications by September 20, 2016 to [email protected]. (See the Application Requirements page for full information.)

vii. how selections will be made Innovation and conceptualization: Bring your idea to life. Help us see it! Relevant past experience and knowledge: We don’t need you to be Lebron James, but we want you to know what you’re doing, and that we’ll be able to make your work shine for a long time over here. Samples of your work: Show us who you are. What do you do? How do you do it? Any other relevant technical experience: We probably love you already, but surely there are more reasons to. How it will exist in the context of the proposed specific area of the property: medium and it’s relationship to the survace, longevity, any other ideas relevant to the area you’ve chosen? Anything else you see fit to mention: Because you seem pretty great. The floor is yours.

viii. awards / budget Awards will be offered to each artist selected. Awards and budgets will vary on a project-by-project basis, based on area and application, and materials installation costs will be negotiated with the artists and/or sub-contractorsbudget (provided with application).
