Repent and Be Baptized Acts 2:33-40

Agenda • Exaltation of Christ • Psalm 110

• Man’s Response • Repentance • Baptism

• The Holy Spirit’s Work • Romans 8

Acts 2:29 • Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulcher [tomb] is with us unto this day.

Peter could have pointed to the actual place.

Acts 2:30 • Therefore [David] being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ [the Messiah] to sit on his throne;

This is the Davidic Covenant (2 Sam 7)

Acts 2:31 •He [David] seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell [Hades], neither his flesh did see corruption. Hades = ‘the place of the dead’

Acts 2:32

•This Jesus [of Nazareth] hath God raised up, •whereof we witnesses.

all are

Acts 2:33

•Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted,

Turn over to Phil 2:5ff

Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. 9 Therefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 5

Paul Teaches Us that Christ’s Exaltation was a His Reward for His Obedience Phil 2:9

Peter Promises Exaltation to Those who Humble Themselves to the Lord’s Leadership

1 Peter 5:6

•Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that

he may

exalt you in due time:

Notice Peter assigns responsibility for what they have seen to the exalted Lord Jesus v. 33

Acts 2:33 •and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he [Jesus] hath

shed forth

this, which

ye now see and hear.

Since Jesus is Now Lord (v. 36) He is the One who Sent the Holy Spirit

Acts 2:34

•For [continuing to make his point] • David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself,

•The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,

Acts 2:35

•Until I make thy foes [enemies] thy footstool. Look Back @

Psalm 110

The LORD [Yĕhovah] said unto my Lord ['adown] Sit thou at my 1

right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool. 2 The LORD shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies. 3 Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth.

The LORD [Yĕhovah] hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou [Lord] art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. 4

David is NOT a priest. He is a king and he is a prophet, but he is not a priest after the order of Melchizedek. Peter says, ‘this

is Jesus of Nazareth!’

The Lord [Jesus] at thy right hand shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath. 6 He [Jesus] shall judge among the heathen, he shall fill the places with the dead bodies; he shall wound the heads over many countries. 7 He [Jesus] shall drink of the brook in the way: therefore shall he lift up the head. 5

Acts 2:36 • Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus [of Nazareth], whom ye have crucified,

both Lord and Christ.

Acts 2:37 • Now when they heard this, they

were pricked in their heart

?

Pricked

John 16:8 • And when he [the Holy Spirit] is come, he will reprove

[convict] the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

This is one of the many reasons why we pray for the power of the Holy Spirit In our Preaching Services

Notice the Holy Spirit Convicts And the People Ask a Question

Acts 2:27 • Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles,

Men and brethren, what

shall we do?

Acts 2:38 • Then Peter said unto them,

•Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Is Peter’s answer the answer we should give today? Fact: This is the only verse in the NT that ties ‘repentance and baptism together’ for remission of sins.

Acts 2:38 • Then Peter said unto them,

•Repent Peter will use the word ‘repent’ two more times in Acts 3:19 8:22

And now, brethren, I know that through ignorance ye did it, as did also your rulers. 18 But those things, which God before had shewed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled. 19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; 20 And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you: 21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began. 22 For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. 23 And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people. 24 Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days. 25 Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. 26 Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities. 17

In Acts 8 Simon the Magician must repent because he thought the power of the Spirit could be bought

in both cases repentance involves a change in thinking

Acts 2:38 • Then Peter said unto them,

• and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, at face value Peter seems to connect baptism to the forgiveness of sins with the preposition ‘for’

If this were Peter’s Theology We would expect him to be consistent

Acts 3:19 •Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out,

no mention of baptism

Is belief or believe mentioned in Acts? Acts 2, 4, 5, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 21, 22, 24, & 28

Acts 2:44 • And all that believed were together, and had all things common; Acts 4:4 • Howbeit many of them which heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand. Acts 4:32 • And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul… Acts 5:14 • And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.

Acts 8:12-13 • But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.

Acts 16:30-31 • And brought them out, and said,

•Sirs, what must I do to be saved? • And they said,

• Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

Acts 10:43 • To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. Acts 13:48 • And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed. Acts 28:24 • And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not.

Peter is not neglecting faith; he is instead emphasizing the importance of Baptism From Peter’s Perspective Baptism is NOT Optional

Their baptism in Jerusalem would publicly set them apart as followers of Jesus Christ.

Baptism does NOT save, but it is not optional. Peter told them to be baptized because His Lord Jesus told the apostles to ‘make disciples’ and baptize those disciples.

Matthew 28:19-20 • Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. • Amen.

Acts 2:38 • Then Peter said unto them,

• and ye shall receive the gift of

the Holy Ghost. Notice believers (v. 44) receive the gift of the Holy Spirit when they believe.

I am often asked the question:

How can I know if I am saved?

Do you experience the presence and power of the gift of the Holy Spirit in your life?

Turn to Romans 8 Most of us know vs. 1, but what about the rest of the chapter?

Romans 8:9-10 • But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. • And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

Romans 8:11-12 • But if the Spirit of him [Christ] that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken [make alive] your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

Romans 8:13 • For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify [put to death] the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

•For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

Romans 8:15-16 • For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

• The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

The Holy Spirit • Seals (marks) the believer • Creates ‘spiritual life’ or regenerates • Convicts the world of sin • Leads the believer • Places us in the family of God • Actively works to make us holy • Empowers us to witness • Dispenses Spiritual Gifts • Prays with and for me • Is a helps believers do the will of their Heavenly Father

Ephesians 1:13 • In whom [Christ] ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: • in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise,

Look back at Acts 2:39 “the Promise”

Acts 2:39 • For

the promise

Through the Apostle Peter, God promises to all who turn to Him (repent) and believe the Gospel (normally publicly pictured by baptism) the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:39 • For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off,

Acts 2:39

•even as many as the Lord our God shall call. This takes us back to v. 37— ’pricked in their heart.’ Paul explains this in Romans 8:29-30

Romans 8:29-30 • For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

Acts 2:40 • And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying,

•Save yourselves from this untoward generation.
