2014 Annual Meeting Program Chair

Eric Williams, Partner Gallatin Public Affairs Spokane, WA 509.624.7655 [email protected]

A Partner at Gallatin Public Affairs, Eric Williams is a nationally recognized expert in mining, minerals and natural resource policy and politics. For nearly two decades, energy and natural resource companies have looked to Eric to help them navigate the challenging state and federal regulatory procedures required to permit major projects. In addition to permitting policy and communications expertise, he also is a skilled researcher on topics and organizations critical to natural resource debates. Based in the firm’s Spokane office, but frequently traveling to project-sites across the western United States, Eric understands how to effectively position projects in the public eye and how to build and activate community and grassroots support for controversial projects. Prior to joining Gallatin, he was a partner with Environomics Inc., a regional public affairs firm. Earlier, Eric was a reporter with the Helena Independent Record and The Montana Standard. He has served two terms as a Trustee of the American Exploration & Mining Association (formerly NWMA). Born and raised in Central Montana’s renowned cattle county, Eric earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from the University of Montana. Eric lives with his wife near Spokane, and they have two grown children and a granddaughter.

Gov. Schweitzer is the only Governor in Montana history elected directly from the business world, not having been elected to any other office. As Governor, he served as Chair of the Western Governors’ Association, during 2009, and the Democratic Governors’ Association, during 2008. Gov. Schweitzer also served as the 2011 President of the Council of State Governments. In 1993, he was appointed by former President Bill Clinton to the United States Department of Agriculture as a member of the Montana USDA Farm Service Agency Committee. While at the Department of Agriculture, Gov. Schweitzer served on the Montana Rural Development Board and the National Drought Task Force. Gov. Schweitzer earned his Bachelor of Science degree in international agronomy from Colorado State University and a Master of Science in soil science from Montana State University, Bozeman.

Wednesday’s Welcoming Luncheon Keynote Speaker Former Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer Chairman of the Board Stillwater Mining Company

Developing mineral resources in North America has never been more important. Resource nationalism and our dependence on critical and strategic metals from China, South Africa, Russia, etc. have hurt America’s economy and forced us into reliance on unfriendly and/or unstable nations. Many mining companies have learned the hard way how important it is to do business in safe geopolitical regions that respect the rule of law… read North America.

Industry Outlook Luncheon Keynote Speaker Andrea E. Neuman, Partner, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP Andrea Neuman was one of the lead trial attorneys representing Chevron Corporation in its recent racketeering trial against Steven Donziger, the lawyer behind a $18 billion fraudulent environmental judgment in Ecuador. Ms. Neuman will discuss how she and her colleagues built their overwhelming case against Donziger through years of investigative work, forensic analysis, and dogged litigation in over twenty U.S. court proceedings — culminating in a sweeping judgment finding Donziger and his allies to have committed fraud, extortion, and racketeering. Among the numerous scams uncovered was the hiring of Stratus Consulting (Stratus and former employees Doug Beltman and Ann Maest were among named co-defendants) to ghost write the report of a purportedly independent expert which was used by Donziger & Stratus to validate their baseless claims.

Mining and Exploration Hydrology Room: Bonanza A Area of interest: Environmental Chairs: Ronald T. Parratt, Project Hydrogeologist, Schlumberger Water Services, Reno, NV Mike Hardy, Water Resources Project Manager, Lumos Engineering, Reno, NV Session Description: Water can be a necessary resource and/or obstacle when it comes to mineral exploration and mining. While many of the mining and milling processes require large volumes of water, others mining operations require the extract and remove the resource before continue. Because of the importance of this resource, the topic of hydrology has become a critical component in many aspects of mineral exploration and mining. The Mining Hydrology Session plans to address many of the challenges associated with this resource and how these challenges are being resolved in the industry. The topics within mining hydrology include, but are not limited to, mine dewatering, groundwater modeling. Permitting (Water Pollution Control Permits), potable water, hydrological aspects of closure, contaminant transport, water rights, water treatment, slope depressurization, and pit lake characterization. Minerals exploration deals with water rights, conveyance, and availability issues. The proposed session will work to bring to center stage the important issues that surround the hydrological aspects of mining and mineral exploration. With the hydrology topic becoming a very important component within the mining sector, the information will be of value to mining professionals who attend.
