Class sets of responders may be checked out from the library. You must have the 2Know Toolbar! software on your computer before you can use the responders as polling device or for “on the fly” assessments. You must have the AccelTest software installed on your computer in order to create assignments, assign logins to students, and have the responders grade an assignment for you. Check to see if you have the software by going to Start > All Programs and see if you have a 2KnowTool bar folder and an AccelTest folder.

If not, you will need to download the software from the deployment portal. If you are downloading it to a laptop, plug your laptop in to the network with a blue network cable first. Then go to Windows Button (Start) > Desktop Manager

Click on Put a check in box in front of Renaissance Learning and click the the lower left. 8.

2Know Toolbar The 2Know! Toolbar requires the least preparation. You can check overall understanding or opinions of a class or group quickly and easily 1.

You begin by plugging in the receiver to your computer with the USB cord.

Open up the 2Know! Toolbar on your computer, connected to an LCD projector. Start > Programs > 2Know! Toolbar

Administrator PIN can be gotten from you CIT Select Server Settings tab Type the name you want in the Network Name box Press update Network Settinigs This might be helpful if more than one teacher is using the responders in a close proximity and you want to verify that students log on to the correct receiver. 4.

Select the type of question you wish to ask by clicking the appropriate button on the toolbar. T/F for true/false A , ABC for multiple-choice B , 123 for numeric response C or Short Answer D .

5. If you do not see the short answer option, click on the options button on the toolbar and then Themes… there you can choose to add/remove the short answer option. You can change the size and color of the toolbar here also. 6. To be able to use the short answer option student Responders must be using firmware version 3.3 or higher. See Appendix I for directions on checking and/or updating the responder firmware. 7.

In the middle of the 2Know! toolbar it will show the percentage of students who have responded and how many students are connected.

Click Options on the 2Know toolbar and choose Teacher Responder. If the program tells you that you haven’t assigned a Responder to the teacher, click Assign. Start the responder and enter the PIN the toolbar program shows you, and press Enter. The responder will list your options. To unassign the responder press Options > Teacher Responder > Unassign > Close

AccelTest Allows you to create assignments, add them to class Gradebooks, assign them to your students, and score them by having students transmit their answers using the Responder. You can enter the questions in Accel test and have them appear on the responder or you can just enter a score key in Accel test for scoring purposes. New: Open-ended answers, allowing more flexibility and options to evaluate student learning and to save time by eliminating the need to develop multiple choice answers. Note: requires version 3.3 or higher of AccelTest on the computer that your wireless renaissance receiver is plugged into. See Appendix I for how to check what firmware is on your responders,

The steps needed to use Accel test with the responders are as follow: (Detailed steps are on separate Renaissance Learning handout except where noted) Set up School Year Enter/import students (see next section for details on importing students) Create a class Create an assignment Add and assignment to the grade book Assign an assignment Start a responder session Importing Rosters Students can be entered individually or by importing a roster from your Skyward gradebook. 1. Open up Skyward Educator Access and go to My Gradebook 2. Under Reports for All Classes select Grade Sheet Report

3. Select Add a new Template. 4. Give the report a name, like Responder Download. Press Save. 5. Make the following selections

6. Press Save 7. Making sure you have the new template selected click on Export to Excel 8. When the report is done running select Display Report. 9. Open a new blank Excel file 10. On the first row type the following headers:

LNAME FNAME ID 11. Copy and paste the last name, first name and ID numbers for your first class from the downloaded file to the new file.You may want to add leading zeros to the front of the student ID (lunch code) so that all are 5 digits long If you want the leading zeros on the student IDs to show you need to select the ID column and go to more number formats. Select Custom and type 000## in the Type section and press OK.

Appendix I Updating Firmware You can now include short-answer items on Responder assignments or on the 2Know toolbar. However, student Responders must be using firmware version 3.0 or higher if you want to do this. Follow the steps below to check the firmware version on each Responder and to upgrade it if necessary. 1. If the Responder is not already on, press the On/Off button. 2. If the Responder has been assigned a student owner and asks for the student PIN, press ?. Then, press yes True and then Enter to stay connected to the current Receiver (server). Enter the Administrator PIN (get from your CIT) and press Enter. Then, press any key. 3. Press the down arrow button to scroll down to Settings; then, press Select. 4. With About selected, press Select. If the firmware version number is smaller than 3.0, you must upgrade the firmware. Press Select to go back to the menu; then, select Settings again and press Select. 5. The 1.x versions of the firmware must be selected if you want the calculator and font size selection to be available, and you do not plan to ask short-answer questions. Choose an odd-numbered version if you want a small font on the responder or an even numbered version if you want a large font. Choose the newest version of the type you need (the largest number). 6. Press the down arrow button to scroll down to Firmware Update; then, press Select. 7. If the Responder asks if you want to stay connected to your Renaissance Receiver, press yes (True); then, press Enter. 8. After a moment, the Responder will display the available firmware versions. Use the arrows to highlight version 3.0 (or higher). Press Select. 9. When the Responder asks you to, enter the administrator PIN; then, press Enter. 10. During the update, the Responder will display a scroll bar. When the update is complete, the Responder will show you the version number. Press any key to go to the main menu or the student PIN entry screen. For short-answer questions, students enter characters in their short answers similar to the way they enter characters in a text message on a standard cell phone, you can purchase overlays on the Renaissance Learning website (pack of 40 for $20).
