• Enhanced productivity from distributed workforce services, mobility and unified messaging • Operational simplicity and cost savings from consolidation of networks and unified management Internet Protocol (IP) is ubiquitous throughout LANs, campus networks, enterprise intranets and the Internet. All this makes IP uniquely suited to be the protocol for unifying telephony with data. Today’s IT managers are challenged to provide high-quality communications capabilities throughout distributed organizations in a cost-effective manner. The Remote Office 9150 from Nortel Networks* is a powerful option for small remote offices with up to 32 users. The Remote Office 9150 leverages investment in the host Meridian 1* system by extending Meridian* Digital Telephones, including those supporting Customer Care applications, to a remote site. Applications Any enterprise that needs to support small, remote offices and is looking for centralized management will benefit from the Remote Office 9150. A few examples of businesses that could benefit from the Remote Office 9150 include banks, credit unions and other financial services organizations. The Remote Office 9150 is also ideal in the health services field where small clinics and doctors’ offices extend from a main hospital. Additionally, a teleworking center for a group of remote workers or call center agents can reach into an outlying community while connected to their Meridian 1 at the main facility for full feature transparency.

The Remote Office 9150 can be flexibly extended over an IP WAN, ISDN BRI lines or both. Up to four BRI interfaces are supported and can be used as “trunks” between the host and remote and also for local calling capabilities.

QoS (Quality of Service) transitioning When the IP network is used as a transport to carry voice packets, network QoS is monitored for certain key parameters to maintain voice quality. The Remote Office 9150 monitors the percentage of IP packets which are lost in transit

(packet loss), the variability in the arrival of IP packets (jitter), and endto-end packet delay (latency). If these parameters exceed acceptable thresholds, a circuit switched connection is established between the Remote Office 9150 unit and the Reach Line Card (RLC) in the Meridian 1. Calls in progress are dynamically and transparently moved from the IP network to the circuit switched network, and call quality is quickly restored. Once the data network can support the required QoS levels, calls can be transitioned back to the IP network.

presence within the community the remote office supports. This capability can reduce unnecessary toll charges.

Efficient use of bandwidth

Survivable

Multiple compression algorithms are supported to maximize use of bandwidth between the remote office and the Meridian 1. Using G.729 (8 kbps) encoding, up to 8 simultaneous calls can be carried on a single ISDN B channel.

If the connection is lost between the host Meridian 1 and the remote site, survivability is provided because all remote users have access to the ISDN BRI lines allowing local incoming and outgoing calls for all remote users. In addition, the local switching capability allows remote users to call between telephones and to transfer external calls to another local telephone. A paging feature is also supported allowing remote users to make audible announcements to the general population of other remote users whose phones are not in use.

Local calling capability ISDN BRI lines at the remote office allow Remote Office 9150 users to get dial tone from their local central office or from the host Meridian 1. Therefore, local telephone numbers can be published supporting a local

Local Switching Bandwidth to the Meridian 1 system is used efficiently because extension-to-extension calls between telephones at the same remote site will pass the telephone control information to the Meridian 1 but connect the voice conversation directly at the remote site. Therefore no WAN bandwidth is wasted in the process.
