Rely on Aggreko to power your mine at… every stage of a mine’s life

Mine expansion Commercially engineered solutions to support project feasibility and rapid expansion.

Power is a critical consideration at every stage of a mine’s life cycle.

Full production Avoid downtime and maintain production targets with safe, continuous power.

Selecting a reputable long-term power partner that can ensure your mine is always on at every stage, is as important as having the correct economics, environmental considerations and market timing. Mining companies worldwide trust Aggreko for their power. Aggreko provides fully flexible power packages for every stage of the mine lifecycle, from project planning and construction, through to commissioning, production, expansion and eventual ramp-down

Closure & rehabilitation Achieve optimum mine closure performance by minimising costs, fuel consumption, environmental and social impact.

Early production Early power, early production, early cash flow.

Early exploration Make even remote locations feasible with Aggreko’s complete & reliable power solutions.

Feasibility stages Why buy when you can receive expert engineering solutions that improve cash flow and avoid capital expenditure?

Rent your power and cut your capital expenditure Access to capital is one of the biggest issues facing the mining industry. Mining companies that make capital investments only when they need to, and avoid up-front expenditure, can achieve substantial reductions in overall costs. Renting large equipment, rather than buying it, can help to stabilise cash flow as there is no major initial outlay and maintenance is usually included in rental contracts. Aggreko understands the vital and changing role that power plays over the lifecycle of a mine. We tailor our power rental solutions to meet the demands across all stages of development and operations from initial earth work to construction, commissioning and production.

Ramp-down Extend the life time and profitability of your project with Aggreko’s flexible solutions.

Construction & commissioning Fast-track mine construction and commissioning with rapid, on-time delivery of temporary power.

The rental flexibility ‘sweet spot’ Aggreko rental power solutions are modular and scalable. So, when operations at a mine expand you can easily increase power capacity and, if operations are scaled back, quickly take excess power off-hire. Investing in the future ‘Innovation is not about doing something for the first time; it is about doing things better. That’s where we fit in’’ At Aggreko, we are introducing new and enhanced products to offer outstanding support in mine

operations. For example, our recently launched G3+ is the most fuel-efficient diesel reciprocating engine on the market. Housed in a 20-ft container, it optimises fuel combustion to minimise emissions, while delivering improved power output and an extended operating life. We have also introduced reciprocating ‘lean burn’ gas engine technology to take advantage of the lower fuel consumption costs made possible by the increased availability of gas at mine locations.

Temperature control Aggreko is a leading player for temperature control in the mining sector. We supply equipment and services for major operators, helping them manage productivity and increase the profitability of their coal and metal ore mining operations. Reducing temperature in working areas so that personnel can work safely and efficiently is a key issue in many mines. In large facilities reducing the ambient temperature by even a few degrees can require vast amounts of chilled air. Our rental solutions offer increased flexibility; enabling mine operators to manage their capital expenditure when budgets are tight and respond to price spikes by bringing in rental equipment to quickly boost production.

Case study Commissioning phase:

Power generation and loadtesting for iron ore mine Situation CITIC Pacific Mining is developing the world’s largest – and Australia’s first – magnetite iron ore mine and processing facility. The Sino Iron project, located at Cape Preston in Western Australia, will mine 2 billion tonnes of magnetite ore. Construction of the on-site mine equipment, including a 450 MW combined cycle gas fired power station, needed to take place before production of iron ore could commence. Before firing up the gas turbines on the power station for use, CITIC Pacific Mining needed to test the load placed on the power station to ensure it could cope with the demand from such a large mining operation. Also, whilst the power station was under testing, CITIC Pacific required back-up power to continue construction of the mining facility.

Aggreko solution Aggreko supplied CITIC Pacific Mining with critical load-testing capacity along with a highly

flexible, supplementary power package during the completion of these two phases of the mines’ construction. Fourteen load banks supplying 12 MVA of capacity were dispatched to Cape Preston from Aggreko depots all around Australia and commissioned to test the power generation capability of the on-site power plant. Once fully commissioned, the 450 MW power plant will provide power to the entire operations at the mine: including the processing plant, the specially built port and the living quarters of the mine’s employees; so testing the load placed on the plant is critical to the ongoing operation of the mine. In addition to load-testing, Aggreko supplied 2.5 MW of power that was utilised at different stages of the project. This included 1600 kVA for the commissioning of the processing plant, 800 kVA for construction of the in-pit ore crushers and 3050 kVA to power the intake pump of the project’s desalination plant. A further 13 generators were utilised for commissioning of the dewatering plant.

Why was Aggreko chosen? Aggreko was chosen for the ability to deliver a multi-faceted, fully customised and highly flexible power solution to the customer. The ability to cope with the complexity and size of the project, as well as to coordinate the deployment of equipment from around the country and commission its use within a short time frame was another factor contributing to the success of this project.

Case study Early production phase:

Baseload power for the construction and commissioning of a coal mine Situation Xstrata’s Mangoola coal mine is an open cut mine located 20 kilometres west of Muswellbrook, in the Hunter Region of New South Wales. Mangoola is based on a large and previously undeveloped coal reserve of approximately 150 million tonnes. During the construction of the mine, the connection to the local power grid was delayed. Without access to sufficient power, the completion of the project was at risk of falling behind schedule. With supply contracts already in place, any delay to the completion of the project had to be avoided. It was therefore vital that an alternative power source be secured in the absence of the grid connection.

Aggreko solution Aggreko already had a number of generators located at Mangoola across various areas of the project from the initial stages of the mine’s

development. When it was recognised that Xstrata would require a more substantial and longerterm power source, Aggreko consolidated the existing fleet and added additional capacity into a centralised, temporary power plant. Due to the modular nature of the Aggreko solution, the power plant was able to grow incrementally in line with the increasing demands of the project. This included 2 MW for pumping of water from the nearby river for the processing plant and 4 MW for the commissioning of the drive motors on the coal conveyer transfer system. At its peak, the plant was supplying 16 MW of baseload power across the entire commissioning activities of the project. The power plant was operated 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by Aggreko technicians based on-site and was supported by the nearby Aggreko depot in Newcastle.

In the customers words...

Why was Aggreko chosen?

“Aggreko was highly proactive in bringing a solution that addressed the issues we were facing during the early phases of the Mangoola project. The quality and reliability of the power solution they provided was first class”.

Aggreko worked with Xstrata to quickly move from a decentralised, job specific power provision to supplying a fully integrated power plant to run the entire project.

Scott Elliot

Project Manager, Mangoola Coal, Xstrata

By consolidating the existing equipment into a centralised power station, the provision of power became both more flexible and economical. Power supply could be more easily regulated between periods of high and low usage which ensured a more cost effective level of fuel consumption.
