RTC’s Purpose? • To improve standards of safety and quality of care by helping you put your time towards patient care in the most efficient way possible.

What is “Releasing Time to Care”? • Releasing Time to Care is a suite of proven, trademarked improvement programs for health care delivery • Developed in the UK by the NHS’s Institute for Innovation & Improvement • Based on Lean & Six Sigma methodology • The “Productive Ward” series is applied directly to the “Ward” /inpatient care environments, that is unit led (manager or designate), driven by care providers/senior leadership and guided by facilitators

Who else is Doing RTC? • In 175/179 National Health Service (NHS) hospitals in the UK • In 24 other countries • In Canada: – SASKATCHEWAN: Saskatchewan intends to roll RTC out to all their medical and surgical wards by 2012.

– ONTARIO:

based on the promising results from the RTC pilot sites in four acute-care hospitals in 2009, Ontario expects to more than double the # of participating hospitals beginning in 2010.

How does RTC work??.....

RTC is….. • •

RTC is a systematic approach to process improvement focused on inpatient nursing procedures. The Productive Ward includes 3 foundation modules that provide the knowledge/skills on using the baseline measuring tools and identifying what happens on your ward in terms of daily/regular processes/activities: - Knowing How We Are Doing - Well Organized Ward - Patient Status at a Glance Once the foundation modules are complete, then the ward staff will decide which of the eight process modules will be most benefit for them to start with: - Shift Handovers - Medicines - Patient Hygiene - Nursing Procedures - Ward Rounds - Meals - Patient Observations - Admissions and Planned Discharge

.

This kit provides all the necessary steps to guide RTC teams through the process!

These are typically the people that will be engaged along our journey……. Maintenance/Facilities Services Health Records Department Housekeeping/Aides Home Care Pharmacy Dietary PT/OT Clinical Nurse Educators Discharge Coordinators

Let’s Review…… • Goal of RTC is to increase the amount of direct care time that nursing staff spend with patients • Improves nursing staff satisfaction with their work environment • Improves patient satisfaction with their stay • Not a cost containment or staff reduction strategy So at the end of it all….RTC is to help staff save time & steps in order to do the work that will support optimal patient care!

Some E.G. of Outcomes in Saskatchewan RTC Sites: • Sick time decreased by 300 hours in one year. • Overtime decreased by 162.34 hours. • Nurses increased their direct care time from 24 to 44.5%. • Overall staff well-being substantially increased and sustained from 60% to 85%.

“For the most part it’s about empowerment…to actually feel you are a part of a change and it’s not just people out there somewhere - that we don’t know who “they” are - making the change for you.” ~ RN, Regina site
