Pastor’s Letter September 14/15

911

Dear Parish Family, September is a special month. Of course I am prejudiced since I was born in September. But I am not alone in my delight in this month. It is a time of new beginnings for every student, a month that reminds us of summer’s warm days and gives us a hint of autumn. September also grips us in another way. It was on one of those September days just 12 years ago that our country was forever changed. A perfect blue day on which terror came into our lives. It is interesting how and why we hold onto memories. I found it difficult this week to watch the news replay of images of falling towers, crashing planes, terror in the streets and the seeming endless funerals for fire fighters, police officers, rescue workers, and ordinary citizens who fell that day. It was a painful time but it was also a very special time. It was a time of heroes and gratitude, a time when all of us seemed to pull together and to be especially thankful for each other. Several years ago I was invited to take part in an oral history project with the rescue workers who labored at the site of the World Trade Center. An oral history project allows people to speak on camera and tell their stories. We interviewers simply asked some questions to help the person begin. Everyone I spoke with had a personal story of the horrors they witnessed on that day and the days that followed. At the end of the interview we asked if there were something to be learned from their experiences. This was the most powerful part of the story. Almost everyone we spoke with said that these days were difficult but special and that there was a way that people worked together, respected each other, and seemed free of the ordinary petty complaint and tension that so often divide us. They spoke of how important it was not only to hold onto memories of friends who were lost but also to that amazing experience of community and cooperation that they discovered. This kind of memory is at the heart of Christianity. The memory of Jesus, the memory of his life, his words, and most of all his love for us is something that we hold onto to help us live our lives each day. In a way the key thing about community is helping each other remember. In this month of September we mourn the loss of those who gave their lives on 9-11-01 and we are thankful for the power of community that we continue to discover. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Michael A. Vetrano

A Message From USCCB

Our Lady of the Hamptons The 2013-2014 school year has begun for the 300 students of our Regional Catholic school. Families are urged to consider the place of Catholic education in their children’s lives. Information leading toward enrollment for the 2014-15 school year is available at the school. (There is currently space available in the kindergarten and pre-school classes. The annual Bucks for Books raffle to benefit OLH is beginning now, and will culminate in the grand drawing on December 16, with the big winner claiming the $12,000 jackpot. Tickets are available at the school 283-9140.

Our Lady of the Hamptons now stands as the only Catholic elementary school on the East EndSouth Fork of Long Island. Outstanding academics, especially on Math and Language Arts, a strong Fine Arts program of music, art, dance and drama and a growing Science and Technology program are enhanced by the teaching of our Catholic faith. Parish and community outreach and participation on the wide extra-curricular activities. Despite a difficult economy and increased demands upon the parish budgets, the school is now actively seeking investors from among the parish, local and wider communities as they seek to raise the final funding necessary to complete and furnish the interior of the classrooms. The estimated deficit is approximately eight hundred thousand dollars. We invite anyone who is willing to consider the possibility of a memorial gift in any amount to visit the school, call for an appointment (283-9140) or visit the website www.olh.org where a full video of the constriction project is available. Brochures are available in the vestibule of the church. The need to continue, expand and reap the benefits of a true Catholic education is essential as we face the future of our Church and country. We cannot put a price on the effect your gift may have, but promise prayers of gratitude and support , as well as the knowledge that you have truly helped to make a difference! Thanks so much! We hope from you! Sister Kathryn Schlueter, CSJ Principal

Regional School News

Early in 2009, the community of Our Lady of the Hamptons Regional Catholic School embarked upon a major campaign to raise funds for the proposed construction of a full-scale gymnasiumWellness center and four additional classrooms to accommodate the growing student population. Thanks to the parent, student, parish and local communities, as well as a few major foundations, close to three million dollars was raised. The first physical education classes and inter-school athletics competitions were held beginning in January of this year!

Adult Faith Formation :: September 23 at 7 PM Faith and Health Care Decisions What every Catholic needs to know

Faith Formation and Adult Education

Fr. Mike Vetrano Modern medicine is both wonderful and frighteningly complicated. Just 50 years ago people were born and people died without much to consider or decide about. Today things are different. Many have already faced difficult health care decisions for family members. We wonder who will decide things for us if we cannot make our own decisions. Many wonder what a person of faith should think about life support, artificial nutrition, organ donation, and the care of the seriously ill. This evening will explore the changes in medicine and the development of Catholic medical ethics. This will be a practical evening, giving you the information you need to prepare for these decisions. It will also be spiritual since the way we face these issues if often a profound encounter with our faith, trust, and belief.

Year of Faith Diocesan Pilgrimage to the Basilica Shrine of the Immaculate Conception Washington, D.C.

Saturday, September 28th, 2013

Undertaking a pilgrimage to a specific holy site, as an individual or with others, helps the Christian prepare for the journey, the high point of which is the encounter with God, through Christ, in the power of the Spirit in the midst of the church. Pilgrimage is a transforming practice which opens us to the gift of the indulgence for ourselves and for others. It gives renewed meaning to the rites and rituals which are gifts of our faith and which serve to deepen our connection to God through Christ and to one other.

Join us for a day of prayer, reflection, reconciliation and Eucharist. For further information and to reserve your seat: Please contact Your Parish Coordinator: Gina Arresta 287-3122 [email protected]

Year of Faith Pilgrimage

For the Christian, pilgrimage is a way of life. Our life on earth is a continuing journey towards complete union with God in the kingdom. From earliest times, Christians have journeyed to defined spaces and places to practice pilgrimage as a spiritual exercise for growth in faith.

St. Pius X Enriched Living Facility “Caring for Those who Cared for Us” The special collection for retired priests, living at St. Pius X Enriched Living Facility, will take place the weekend of September 21/22. Our Priests, at retirement, often have given forty years or more to the mission of our Church and bringing people closer to Christ. The St. Pius X Residence enables these dedicated men who need extra care and attention to live at a facility that provides them with that special care, while still enabling them to serve as active fully engaged members of the community. The Catholic Church of Long Island is blessed and privileged to be able to care for our senior priests - men who have dedicated their lives to serving God and our community. We welcome your support of this important endeavor. For more information or to donate online go to www.drvc.org/stpiusx or call 516-379-5210 ext 229 for more information.

Ministry of Praise for Life comes to SHJM This fall we are beginning a ministry of praise for life. A ministry of praise is made up of parishioners who agree to set aside some time each day to pray for an important cause. Here at SHJM our ministry of praise will be dedicated to the many issues that our Church calls life issues. Life issues that affect the humanity and dignity of every person but most especially those that Pope Francis speaks of as being on the margins of our society: the unborn, the very old, the poor, those in struggling families, those in prison. It is a wonderful ministry for people who are homebound and wish to use their time to pray for others but it is a wonderful ministry for any person who can devote a few minutes a day to prayer. We will be holding an enrollment for our ministry of praise members and each member will receive a prayer book to use each day. If you are interested in joining this ministry, please send your information to the parish office so we can contact you: Ministry of Praise, Sacred Hearts Basilica, 168 Hill Street, Southampton, NY 11968 Tear off here ……………………………………………………………………………..
