SEPTEMBER 10, 2012 Delegates return home 09:00 - Departure of Tour A
Pre-conference activities For our guests arriving early we intend to organize activities prior to the opening of the conference on Friday (Day 1). Possible programs:
visiting a beautifully restored Turkish bath (Friday morning, men only);
visiting the Gellért spa (Friday morning to noon);
visiting the Parliament (Friday early afternoon).
The programs are subject to interest. Signing up in advance for the Parliament building is essential due to strict security procedure. We will announce the exact programs and their fee later. Meanwhile feedback if there is any interest will be appreciated.
Post Conference Tours Post conference tours are the highlights of all Rotary conferences. Not only will you see places you would otherwise probably never go to, but you will also be part of a wonderful company. For all of us infected with the RI YEP, the Youth Exchange officials make a fantastic, diverse group of people from which no one would want to be left out. There are several Tours every year, in various parts of the world, but each of them is completely different offering different adventures. Hungary is a small country in the heart of Europe. A small nation of great importance; with history bridging more than 1100 years. A country with fantastic cultural heritage; with musicians and scientists who have contributed to the world far beyond the size of the country. Despite Hungary is among the thirty most popular tourist destination of the world, probably the majority of the EEMA2012 participants have never been to Hungary, or not beyond Budapest. Hungary has a lot to offer, a lot of places to visit: beautiful scenery, architecture from the Roman era to contemporary design, world class wine production (or, as we say wine manufacturing, due to the size of wineries) and renowned gastronomy. We are planning two tours to two entirely different parts of the country. Tour A will lead to Western Hungary, to the more developed part of the country with pretty medieval towns, beautiful castles and the largest lake in Central Europe (Lake Balaton). Tour B leads to Northern Hungary, which is more traditional with beautiful scenery, thermal water, the world famous Tokaj wine.
What is included in the price?
Accommodation in good quality hotels. Normally hotels are 4* quality, in some places we have to compromise to 3* (because of lack of hotel selection). Single room for delegates coming alone, double room for those arriving with their partners. At least one hotel has spa*;
Breakfast in the hotel, lunch in restaurants along the route;
Travel with luxury coach. The country is small; distances are short; the majority of long distance travel on excellent motorways, some trips on more remote (and slow) roads. Distance covered during a day will normally not exceed 200 km or 3 hours on the bus.
Dinner in good restaurants; many evenings include cultural programs;
Meals include food, water and coffee, only alcohol is paid separately;
Wine tasting programs (modest fee is charged);
Cultural programs: visiting museums, the Pannonhalma monastery, the Eszterhazy castle in Fertőd, the world famous Herend porcelain manufacturing, cruising on Lake Balaton, a traditional and a state of the art modern winery in Tokaj, horse riding show, etc**; (*) the quality of the hotel depends on the location. We cannot guarantee everybody staying in the same hotel. We do our best, however, to make sure that everybody stays in
hotels of similar quality. (**) the final programme is subject to change Please note that some of the destinations are remote, where accommodation is limited. Early registration helps us to provide a place to everybody.
Details - Tour 'A' TOUR ‘A’: WESTERN HUNGARY AND LAKE BALATON: Day A/1 September 10 2012: 9:00 Departure from NOVOTEL Budapest Congress to Pannonhalma (distance: 130 km, 1h30m) visiting the Millenary Benedictine Abbey. The first Benedictine monks settled here in 996. They went on to convert the Hungarians, to found the country's first school and, in 1055, to write the first document in Hungarian. From the time of its founding, this monastic community has promoted culture throughout central Europe. Its 1000-year history can be seen in the succession of architectural styles of the monastic buildings (the oldest dating from 1224), which still today house a school and the monastic community. 13:00 Lunch in Pannonhalma ~14:00 Departure from Pannonhalma to Fertőd (distance: 80 km, 1h30m) ~15:30 Visiting the Eszterházy Palace in Fertőd The Eszterházy Palace „the Hungarian Versailles” is one of the most beautiful Baroque palace in Hungary. The second half of the 18th century was the golden age of Eszterháza under Prince Miklós Esterházy. Joseph Haydn served the prince for several years, who was fond of splendour and was also a patron of the arts. Sopron is characteristic for its special historic atmosphere, thanks to the Romans, who established the settlement here 2000 years ago (it was an important military and commercial center). The today’s city is redolent of this long and rich past, and the with solicitous care preserved - history and traditions. The ’Civitas Fidelissima’ played also an important role in the recent past, when in
1989, in the course of the ’pan-European picnic’ Hungary opened its borders giving way to more thousands of refugees from East-Germany. That meant the end of the communistic era. So – symbolically - the place of the fall of the Berlin Wall was in Sopron. 11:00 Departure from Sopron to Herend (distance: 130 km, 2h). ~13:30 Lunch in Herend ~15:00 Guided tour to the Herend porcelain manufacture and museum Herend is one of the most well known brand of Hungary. Balatonfüred is the centre of the historic Balatonfüred wine region. 11:00 Departure from Balatonfüred to Nagyvázsony (distance: 22 km, 30m) The medieval castle originating from the 14th century is a nice example of Gothic style architecture. Today the castle is hosting Renaissance games and festivals. ~11:30 Visiting the castle in Nagyvázsony ~13:00 Departure from Nagyvázsony to Tihany (distance: 20 km, 30m) ~13:30 Lunch in Tihany ~14:30 Visiting the Benedicitne Abbey of Tihany, founded in 1055 AD.
