About Us

The McWhorter School of Pharmacy’s Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA) Chapter is a student organization “dedicated to the pharmacy profession and serving the underserved.”   During the 2015-2016 academic year, student members provided over 1,200  community service hours to over 1,800 patients and participated in over 50 health fairs and events.  The chapter has been actively involved on campus and throughout the state of Alabama incorporating numerous health initiatives to reduce/prevent common disease states. These initiatives include Power to End Stroke, Operation Immunization, Smoking Cessation, and Diabetes. Each month, student members and preceptors travel to Perry County, Alabama, to provide health screenings and educational lectures to members of the community at Friendship Baptist Church. In 2014, our SNPhA  and APhA-ASP chapters were awarded the Student Community Engaged Award from American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. Members also work with the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s School of Medicine students at the Equal Access Birmingham Clinic to provide homeless and uninsured persons with access to medical healthcare twice a month.  Our chapter was awarded Samford University’s 2016 Outstanding Graduate Student Organization due to continued efforts and scholarship among our student members. Chapter members excel in several areas as evidenced by induction into Phi Lambda Sigma Leadership Society and Rho Chi Honor Society, and recognition in Samford University's Student Leader Spotlight. Our organization has been awarded the Chauncey I. Cooper Chapter Excellence Award for Medium-Sized Chapters twice in 2015 and 2016. We are excited our chapter has been selected to host the 2017 Regions I & II SNPhA Conference. We hope to enlighten attendees about transformations in healthcare, guide them to pharmacy solutions that will optimize patients' health, and help unlock their professional potential.

THE MAGIC CITY

Samford University McWhorter School of Pharmacy will be hosting the Regions I & II Conference in Birmingham, AL, also known as "The Magic City." When Birmingham was founded, settlers realized the abundance of iron ore, coal, and limestone in the soil. This trio of natural resources within a defined geographic region is one of Earth's rarities.  The combination of these resources are used to forge steel.  Factories were able to produce iron and steel products, giving Birmingham the second nickname "The Steel City." Capitalizing on the extraordinary railroad system and natural resources in the soil, Birmingham soon scattered the skyline with steel furnace towers. Birmingham is lovingly called "The Magic City" and known throughout the South as a city of innovation, culture, and history.
