Carol singing at Tricare Nursing Home

C

lub de Goa organized Carol singing on Saturday 8 December 2012 for the residents at Tricare Nursing Home in Mt.Gravatt. We had a crowd of about 40 people take part in carol singing. Among the crowd we had young boys showcase their talent with violin Eden Pereira, Epifania Pereira and Kieren Albuquerque. A special thank you to all those who volunteered their time to make it a special day for the residents at Tricare Mt Gravatt. At noon there was a Christmas party at St Catherine's Church Hall in Wishart followed by a shared lunch of delicious food and deserts. The highlight of the afternoon was games organised by our member Shirley D'Mello, Karaoke singing, Bingo and of course winning prizes.

President’s Message

W

e've had very exciting and eventful functions since Aug-2012, beginning with the World Goa Day right up to the Carnival dance earlier this month, and there is more to come. It is the committee's goal to reach out to our members and keep in touch with our communities expectations. It was special to see a large number of our community members congregate at St. Stephen's Cathedral, on 16th November 2012, to venerate the sacred relic of Saint Francis Xavier, and actively participate in the celebrations. The Goan Choir, led by Edwin Pereira, had the rare privilege to sing the Konkani hymn “Sam Francis Xaviera”. Thanks to Fr. Rego for making this happen. The sports day showcased the talent and the competitive spirit of our members. Congratulations to all winners and participants of the sports day activities. The days highlight was the finals of the Carrom, between Dr. Hilary and Savio. It was indeed a nail biting finish, Dr Hilary came up victorious against a much fancied and younger opponent. The Anniversary Dance, Carnival Dance and the Carol Singing were a resounding success and all credit goes to the hard working and dedicated committee and members for their assistance in organising these events. My special thanks to Fr. Rego for celebrating the Anniversary Mass; Maffy Vaz for preparing the liturgical booklets; Rose De Barros for altar décor/ table pieces; Edwin & Anna for conducting the choir; Fay Correia for selling the most number of tickets; Lauren Fernandes for the Hall Décor; Joel Fernandes for compering the anniversary Dance; Derrick Pinto for compering the Carnival dance and Colin Manekshanna & the members of “ the Rusty Nail Band” for providing foot stomping music free of cost. Hope to see you all on 24th February fro the Club Day. Please feel free to contact me or any committee member with suggestions or concerns. Thank you for your support. - Cajie Fernandes

Anniversary Dance C

lub de Goa celebrated the feast of St. Francis Xavier on 1st December 2012 followed by dinner dance. The mass was celebrated by Fr. Michael Rego our club Chaplain and a group of wonderful Choir, young and old. We had wonderful young talent of boys playing violin, flute supporting the choir with best talent and skills.

2012

Thanks to all the volunteers young and old to showcase their talent in the choir and especially to Edwin Pereira and family to coordinate and help to and making the occasion so graceful. The dinner dance was attended by a crowd of just over 250 people. The evening began with live music by the band “Caught in the ACT”. The band had everyone on their feet all night, people of all ages dancing away to the music. Well done to Joel Fernandes for hosting the evening as a young MC. To add to all the excitement, we had a group of Goan entertainers with Konkanni music and masala. The group consisted of Joaquim Fernandes, Darryl Barreto, Angelo Fernandes, Colin Maneckshana, Cajie Fernandes, Roy Pires. Savio Pereira a member of our club catered the food for the evening. We had a variety of delicious and mouth-watering menu of Sorpotel, Butter chicken, Prawn curry, Vegetable Korma, various salads, condiments and finishing with mouthwatering desert such as Bibinca. Club de Goa would like to thank all those who sponsored and donated gifts and raffle prizes for the dance. Also a very special thank you to all those who helped on the day, to decorate the altar for mass, the hall and also to help with the clean-up at the end of the evening.

Lastly, thank you to all those who enjoyed the dance and sent in their compliments and also to those members who provided feedback and suggestions for improvement. The club values both positive and negative feedback and would like to assure that frank feedback is truly appreciated. It will be taken in the spirit in which it was given, which is looking at it as 'lessons learned' rather than criticism. The club looks forward to all your continued patronage ahead.

Recount of the Carnival Dance - Brenda Monteiro

I

t was wonderful to see so many people at the Carnival Dance at Burnie Brae Hall at Chermside. This event drew a large crowd, from both members and non-members, and was in fact a sell-out with almost 200 people attending. The committee decided to limit bookings to ensure that everyone was seated comfortably and had adequate room to move and dance.

RED & BLACK

Personally I love theme parties, and I loved the red-n-black attire that everyone wore. The music on the night was a combination of DJ music, live Goan music played by a group of our members plus music by a talented band 'The Rusty Nail'. Colin Maneckshana, a club member is also a member of the Rusty Nail. People enjoyed the range of music and dance floor was well-occupied at all times. However the dance-floor was electrified when The Rusty Nail took to the stage. In fact for me The Rusty Nail just hammered it in (note the pun here). A big thank you to Derrick Pinto who did a great job as the MC and coordinated the activities of the evening. The Club de Goa Carnival Dance is about keeping alive some of significant aspects of the Goan culture and as a club hoped that we did just that.
