[email protected] 2017 REFERENCE GUIDE and REGISTRATION FORM ELIGIBILITY: NYSPC competitions are open to any organized percussion ensemble or marching wind ensemble. Classes include: Percussion Classification: Marching (using marching battery percussion instruments with visual choreography): Percussion Scholastic & Independent World PSW, PIW Percussion Scholastic & Independent Open PSO, PIO Percussion Scholastic & Independent A PSA, PIA Percussion Scholastic & Independent Regional A PSRA, PIRA Standstill (using marching battery percussion instruments without visual choreography): Percussion Scholastic A Standstill PSASS Percussion Independent A Standstill PIASS Concert (using traditional concert percussion instruments): Percussion Scholastic Concert A PSCA Percussion Independent Concert A PICA Percussion Scholastic Concert A Cadet PSCACadet (Middle and/or Elementary Level) Winds Classification (using any combination of instrument/guard/choreography) Scholastic or Independent A WSA or WIA Scholastic or Independent Open WSO or WIO Scholastic or Independent World WSW or WIW Performer proficiency level and program design will determine divisions. Ensembles must participate in at least one NYSPC Competition to be eligible for the Championship Show. Participating ensembles may enter in C ompetition (recorded judge comments given, and scores and placements announced), or in F estival ( recorded judge comments given, and ratings of Gold, Silver, or Bronze announced). The PSRA division is a mandatory F estival class.
Participants in the Scholastic classes must be enrolled members of their respective schools. Ensembles that include members from more than one school, university or college level students, and/or nonschool members must register for the Independent classes. There are no age requirements for Independent class participation. Performance Requirements:Performances take place indoors, on a standard size basketball gym floor (60’ x 90’). Marching Percussion Ensembles are encouraged to utilize choreographed movements in their performances. Marching Percussion Ensembles that perform at a standstill will participate in the Standstill divisions. Concert Percussion Ensembles are not expected to utilize choreography. Repertoire may be selected from any music composed or arranged for marching or concert percussion ensemble. The NYSPC encourages writers to seek copyright release for arrangements. Timing Requirements: World Class: 4minute minimum performance time, 11minute maximum floor time Open Class: 4minute minimum performance time, 10minute maximum floor time A Class: 4minute minimum performance time, 9minute maximum floor time Judging : Judges will be used for a ll NYSPC events . The NYSPC will use the WGI scoring system. 5 Judges for all marching classes: Judge #1: Effect Music (30 points) Judge #2: Effect Visual (20 points) Judge #3: Music (30 points) Judge #4 Visual (20 points) Chief Judge/Timer: Timing and Penalty (deductions) 3 Judges for standstill and concert classes: Judge #1: Artistry (50 points) Judge #2: Performance (50) Chief Judge/Timer: Timing and Penalty (deductions) The NYSPC will abide by all rules and regulations as outlines by WGI Contest Rules. Recorded judge commentary: Each judge (except the Chief Judge/Timer) will provide recorded commentary in realtime of each ensemble’s performance. To listen to judge commentary, each director should set up a free account through C ompetition Suite . This will be the only way to receive judge commentary for any NYSPC event in 2017. Recorded commentary will be accessed via “the cloud”, and can be uploaded to any digital media (smart phone, tablet, computer, etc.). Instructions for setting up the C ompetition Suite account will be sent to each director following contest registration.
Post Contest Critique: At the end of each contest (except the Championship Show) there will be a postcontest critique. Directors and instructors will have the opportunity to speak with the judges about their ensemble’s performance that day. Awards: Trophies will be given at all shows. In the PSA division only, one ensemble will be additionally recognized for Best Small School, and one ensemble for Best Large School. Caption award trophies (Best General Effect, Best Performance Analysis, Best Visual, and the Rick Rogers Memorial Award for Best Snareline) will be given in addition to the regular trophies at the Championship Show. All awards will be decided by the judges, and their decisions will be final.
Fall NYSPC Meeting and Clinician: November 13, 2016 @ East Irondequoit High School The fall NYSPC meeting will be held on Sunday November 13, 2016 at 10:30 am with a clinic to follow at 12:00. We will review new rules/procedures for the 2017 season to ensure understanding among our membership. Show host schools for 2017 MUST send a representative to the fall meeting! Our clinic portion for the this year will be a discussion with Teddy Mascari (NYSPC Judge/Education Coordinator) about the new GE sheets (GE Music and GE Visual) and how they will impact our ensembles during the 2017 season. He will also discuss ideas and strategy to ensure your group continues to grow and evolve throughout the competitive season. If you have an suggestions of topics to add to our discussion, please send them to the NYSPC.
