2016 Garbage, Recycling and Programme Information
Calendar
2016 Solid Waste Services Calendar
We
are pleased to provide you with the 2016 edition of the Solid Waste Services (SWS) Garbage, Recycling and Programme Information Calendar. As in previous editions, you will find information about our waste services; including blue box recycling, curbside collection, special event days, and holiday changes. Rural Erin and rural Guelph/Eramosa residents will find their bi-weekly curbside collection days marked each month. A single page rural curbside collection calendar is also available for download from our website at www.wellington.ca/sws.
The theme of this year’s calendar is The three R’s and more. We are all familiar with the well-known three R’s, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. However, there are many more R’s which help protect our environment. In fact, we have an “R” suggestion for every month of the 2016 year! Redefine waste as a resource instead of something to be buried. We hope you find the suggestions in this year’s calendar helpful. Our goal at the County of Wellington and Solid Waste Services is to provide excellent customer service while protecting and enhancing the natural environment through our programmes. Please feel free to contact us to share your thoughts on the calendar and our services. Our contact information is below and on the back cover of the calendar. We look forward to hearing from you!

Curbside Collection
Collection is provided from Tuesday to Friday – weekly in urban areas and bi-weekly in rural areas (Erin and Guelph/ Eramosa only). Please be sure materials are out by 7:00 am on your collection day. Place in a visible location, within one metre (three feet) of the curb or roadside. If you are unsure if you receive curbside collection, or have any questions about where to place your materials, please call our office at 519.837.2601.
User Pay Garbage Garbage must be in a County-issued user pay bag. There are two sizes of bags available. They are sold in packages of 10. Large bags cost $17.50 per package, small bags $10.00 per package. Visit our website to find a distributor in your area.
Recycling Recyclables must be in County approved municipal style blue boxes. See previous pages for a full list of acceptable recyclables. Please put paper products in one blue box and containers in a separate blue box. Blue boxes are available through municipal offices and County waste facilities. Cardboard should be tied in bundles of no more than 60cm x 60cm x 30cm (24” x 24” x 12”). Be sure user pay garbage bags, blue boxes and cardboard bundles are under the limit of 18 kg (40 lbs).
Winter Weather
Please do not place your materials on or behind snowbanks. Put them out on level ground, either in your driveway or in a shovelled out area at the curb. Materials placed on top of snowbanks are difficult for drivers to reach, and may be left behind. Sometimes winter weather will affect curbside collection services. Snow, ice and wind can be treacherous for all drivers on the road. Curbside collection is rarely cancelled, but may be postponed. We will collect your materials as soon as we are safely able to do so. If there is a lot of snowfall after placing your materials to the curb, please brush off your bags and blue boxes to make them easier for the driver to see.
For Garbage or Recycling Service Alerts please phone 519.837.2601 or 1.866.899.0248 or check the SWS eNews page. You can also subscribe to SWS eNews to receive waste-related news and notices directly into your inbox. Just go to www.wellington.ca/subscribe and fill in your information.
Gold Box Reward Programme
The Gold Box Reward Programme recognizes the County’s best recyclers. All households in the County are eligible; those who have curbside collection and those who take their recyclables to a waste facility. This is what we are looking for in a Gold Medal recycler:

Reduce To reduce waste, most people think of the blue box recycling programme first. There are many other ways to reduce your garbage.
•
By composting, each household can divert 10-30% of waste from landfill. You can purchase a backyard composter for $30 at any one of our waste facilities. Free composting workshops are offered each year.
•
Take advantage of the various diversion opportunities located at our waste facilities and in the community.
•
Implement one or more of the many ideas in this calendar on how to responsibly reduce waste.
Helpful Hint When packing lunches for work or school, make them litter free lunches.

• Open 8:00 am to 3:30 pm during regular site operating days.
• Take advantage of allowing others to reuse your “too good to throw out” items. (Disposal fees apply to drop off items.)
• Before you leave the waste facility, stop by the Reuse Centre and see if there are any items you could use. They are free to take home!
• Reuse Centres have diverted more than 178 tonnes from landfill since 2003.
Helpful Hint Post or search for good quality reusable items on the County’s reuse website without having to leave home. www.wellington.reuses.com

Recycle Save resources, help protect the environment and reduce your household waste by recycling! For instance, did you know that most boxes and cartons manufactured in Canada are now made with 100% recycled content?
• The County provides each household with two free blue boxes. They are available at your local municipal office or any one of our waste facilities.
• Separate your paper products into one box and your containers into a second box.
• Please check the pages earlier in this calendar for acceptable items in our programme.
• In 2014, the County collected 5,499 tonnes of blue box recyclables and received $842,660.29 for the sale of those recyclables.
Helpful Hint If you have a damaged recycling box, exchange it for free at your nearest waste facility.

Rethink Before you make a purchase, stop and think.
• Do you need it? • Is it good for the environment? • Can you rent or borrow it instead? • Is it made with recycled content? • Can its packaging be recycled? Rethink, before you make a purchase, and it will help to reduce the impact on the environment.
Helpful Hint Use reusable picnic or party items such as dishware, utensils and linens; or rent them to avoid using disposables.

Refuse Refuse to create unnecessary waste.
• Let manufacturers know that you will refuse excessive or non-recyclable packaging by not buying their product.
• Send manufacturers a letter or an email to tell them why you aren’t buying their products.
• Ask to leave the packaging in the store.
For large items, ask that they take back their packaging at delivery.
• When you need to buy a replacement item, find out if the manufacturer has a recycling programme for the old one. (e.g. filters).
Helpful Hint Styrofoam, plastic shopping bags and plastic wrap are NOT recyclable in the County’s bluebox programme.

Reorganize Did you know that the average household throws away approximately $1,500 worth of spoiled food each year? Try reorganizing your pantry and fridge to avoid creating food waste.
• When unpacking groceries, put new products at the back and bring older products to the front so they can be used before they expire.
• Label or use see-through containers to allow you to see what’s inside.
• Designate one dinner each week as a “use-it-up” meal. • If you can’t use it before it expires, freeze it (if possible) or donate to your local food bank.
Helpful Hint If food does spoil and needs to be thrown out, try composting it. Remember, meat and dairy products should not go in your backyard composter.

Repurpose Most of us have items around the house that we no longer need or use. Instead of throwing them away, find a way to repurpose them. Repurposing an item can be done by altering it to fit a new use, or by using the item as it is, with a different purpose. Explore your creativity and think of new ways of using seemingly useless items. Bring them back to life!
• Ask yourself, “What can I do with this instead of throwing it away?”
• You may avoid having to purchase something brand new and instead create a unique, one-of-a-kind item. • The results can be decorative, practical or both.
Helpful Hint Look on websites such as Pinterest for creative and practical ideas!

Resources As a society, we are depleting our natural resources quickly. While you can only be responsible for your own actions, you can certainly inspire those around you.
• Donate and purchase used items at local charities or thrift stores.
• Recycle whatever you can. • Buy items made with recycled content. • When you have a choice, buy durable and refillable goods instead of disposables (e.g. cloth napkins, travel mugs). Future generations will benefit from your actions.
