HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE Many products used in the home, garden, garage, and hobby shop contain hazardous chemicals that can potentially harm the user or the environment. Items marked as follows should be considered hazardous: “caution” “causes severe burns on contact” “danger” “do not use near heat or flame” “eye and skin irritant” “flammable” “harmful or fatal if swallowed” “hazardous” “keep out of reach of children” “poison” “use in a well-ventilated area” “vapor harmful”

Use safety precautions when using, storing, or disposing of any hazardous products. When discarded, they become household hazardous waste requiring proper disposal.

Tips for Becoming an Environmentally Aware Consumer If you buy household chemicals,  Buy the smallest amount possible – you can always buy more.  Read the label and use only as directed.  Keep products in their original, labeled containers.  Share leftover products with friends, neighbors, and others who can properly use the product.  Use them up! What Happens to Items Collected at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility? AEROSOL CANS

Material is extracted from aerosol cans and disposed of as hazardous waste. The metal that remains is collected by a scrap metal recycler. AMMUNITION is incinerated; the metal casings are recycled. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS 

Antifreeze is filtered, chemicals are added to restore it to comparable virgin antifreeze, and then it is re-sold.

Lead-Acid Batteries are smashed and placed in a vat where the lead and heavy materials sink to the bottom while the plastic floats. – The plastic is melted and used to manufacture new battery cases. – The lead and heavy metals are melted and used to make new battery parts. This “closed loop” recycling diverts a lot of material from the waste stream. After a 40-pound battery is recycled, the remaining material weighs about as much as a car key!

Motor Oil is filtered and re-used as fuel oil in the asphalt paving business.

Oil Filters are separated into metal and paper: – The metal is melted and re-used in making steel; – The paper is used as an alternative fuel source at approved cement kilns.

BATTERIES (Dry-cell)

Metals from dry-cell batteries (e.g., alkaline, lithium, and nickel-cadmium) are extracted and re-used to make new batteries, stainless steel, and  re-bar steel. 

Other extracted materials are used in products for building roads, parking lots, and commercial driveways.

Paper and plastic components are not recycled because the small quantity and mixed grade render them unacceptable to users of recycled paper and plastic.

9

ELECTRONICS

Items are disassembled into glass, plastics and metals, which are reclaimed for manufacturing new products. Less than 5% of e-waste is landfilled. FIRE EXTINGUISHERS are either recharged, or recycled as scrap iron.

FUELS

High BTU (>5,000 BTU’s/lb.) liquids, sludges, and solids are blended into an alternative fuel used by approved cement kilns. PAINT, HOUSEHOLD & AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS, LAWN & GARDEN AND SPA CHEMICALS

Usable items are placed on the Drop & Swap shelves and are offered free to the residents of El Paso and Teller counties. MEDICATIONS are incinerated at high temperatures,

which can destroy up to 99.9% of all hazardous elements. MERCURY

Items containing mercury (e.g., fluorescent lights, fever thermometers, thermostats, and light switches) are processed in ultra-high temperature retort ovens that separate the mercury from the glass and metal. Approximately 99.9% of the mercury is recaptured; the remaining glass and metal is recycled. PAINT / STAINS

 Good, usable paint is bulked for reuse by non-profit organizations, private citizens, contractors, locations like the County Fairgrounds, and for graffiti removal.  Unusable paint is either disposed of at an approved location or used to make building materials.  Stains are either reused once, or bulked and disposed of with an environmental company to be used as fuel at approved cement kilns. PROPANE TANKS are either reused, or recycled as scrap iron. 10

FLUORESCENT LAMPS / BALLASTS Recycle intact lamps and ballasts with PCBs Trash broken lamps and ballasts with no PCBs

Fluorescent lamps use up to 80% less energy than incandescent bulbs. (Source: www.epa.gov)

If every home in America replaced just one incandescent light bulb with an ENERGY STAR-qualified CFL, it would save enough energy in 1 year to light more than 3 million homes, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions equal to about 800,000 cars. (Source: www.energystar.gov)
