CHILDREN & YOUTH MTN BIKING PROGRAMS

Youth Week 2016

Looking to get your young rippers out on their bikes this spring? Our afterschool bike programs are ideal for riders who have had a little trail experience through to those that are building to black diamonds.

Our 3rd annual celebration of the amazing youth of Rossland! www.rosslandyan.ca Rossland Youth Week will be held April 29– May 5, 2016. We are planning the return of youth week favourites such as Red Talks: Ideas Worth Shredding and the Youth Week Art Show, as well as new events like a youth week wrap up gala. For more information or to get involved contact Mike Kent at [email protected]

There are several levels so we can get them out on their bikes with other rippers of the same level in a safe and fun community. The series will be a combination of skill development in a controlled environment and on the trail. During the series the riders will get to build their skills on our mini stunt park as well as the local bike parks. Riders will get a chance to apply these skills on appropriate trails around Rossland. The best part is the shuttle ride back up to RSS or Four Winds Daycare - no riding uphill!! Skills and progressions include: balance and body position, braking, descending, cornering (slow & high speed), flow, maneuvering over and around manmade obstacles, wheel lifts & safety and trail etiquette. They will also go through basic bike maintenance (changing tire, cleaning bike, lubing chain).

Special Olympics Special Olympics BC-Trail is welcoming young athletes with intellectual disabilities to join our inspiring FUNdamentals program starting January 29. FUNdamentals is a mult-sport program for children ages 7 to 11, teaching basic sport skills through fun and meaningful interactions. Come join our joyful community! Thin Air Disc Golf in Rossland

Teenage Shredders 3-hour clinic

Disc golf is played much like traditional golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, however, players throw a flying disc at a basket and try to get their disc into the basket in the fewest number of throws. Disc golf is becoming very popular and Rossland has Thin Air, an outstanding disc golf course for summer play. Thin Air is a full-size 18 basket course with concrete tee pads and outstanding views of the Rossland Range. A round takes about 2 hours to play. The Thin Air Disc Golf Course is located at the Blackjack Ski Club in Rossland and is available for play from when the snow melts in the spring to when there is enough snow to ski in the fall. It is free to play a round. Remember it is a litter free zone so please pack out anything you pack in. You can see the course at; www.pdga.com/course-directory/course/thin-air-disc-golf-course.

This is a good chance for riders to up their game for the season or to brush up on new skills if you are thinking about joining the Downhill Gravity Team! Red Cross Swim Kids Level 1 (30 minutes)

Further refinement of strokes, with an introduction to butterfly and scissor kick as a warm-up/cool down stroke for fitness. Children learn about sun safety, rescue of others from the ice, and head-first and feet-first shallow dives.

This is an entry level for children ready to move in shallow water. This level provides an orientation to the water and the pool area and introduces floats and glides with kicks. Children build their endurance by improving distance. Recreation Department 250 362 2327 [email protected]

Me To We Rossland: Meets on select Mondays from 5:00-6:00pm at the Space Me to We Rossland is a group of socially conscious youth who are committed to making a difference in the world. We will be supporting local and international organizations by promoting awareness and fundraising for their cause, both locally and internationally. We work towards the vision of Me to We: To empower people to transform local and global communities by shifting from “me” thinking to “we” acting. For more information or to join this group contact Mike – [email protected]

Creating a Supportive Rossland group

Front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke and breaststroke continue to be refined. In this level children are encouraged to try combining different strokes and kicks for fitness. They also work on head-first shallow dives and standing dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences, and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400metre swim.

Children will learn to swim independently and participate in team games. Preschoolers will increase their distance and improve skills in front and back swims. Swimmers also learn about throwing assists to help another person in the water.
