STEP 1: Gather records Before the production of the book even begins, Guinness World Records’ global team of judges and talent researchers seeks and verifies new records. Every year, they attend all kinds of record attempts and major events like the London Marathon (pictured right), as well as going through the 1,000-plus claims they receive each week. A team of experts, specialising in everything from archaeology to zoology, also helps to track down new records.

STEP 2: From cover to cover The first step in creating the book is to choose the cover. After trying out several designs and colours, a final decision is made. Next, the design for the inside pages is worked up to make sure each edition feels fresh and exciting. With the same aim, the editorial team picks that year’s topics and any special features.

STEP 3: Camera, action! Every year, the GWR pictures team flies all over the world to capture some of the most spectacular records. For the 2015 annual, they travelled to Italy, the USA and Germany to name just a few places. The shoots involve a lot of organisation and hard work to make sure they show off the record to its best effect. 4

STEP 4: Get writing With a design nailed down, photos taken and a rough plan of records, it’s time to write the book. A small team of editors and designers compiles each page, with an eye to including the most up-to-date records – about 80% of each book is new content. Pages go through several rounds of changes, overseen by Editorin-Chief, Craig Glenday (pictured).

STEP 5: Time to print Once the text is finished, it is sent to be translated into 25 or so different languages. After that, it’s off to the printers to turn the digital files into physical books – all 2.7 million copies of them! The pages are carefully checked as they come off the press (pictured left) to make sure the book looks its best.

STEP 6: The launch September is a very exciting time for GWR, as the book hits the bookshops. The book is featured widely on TV, newspapers and on the internet. Special events are organised with some of the amazing record-breakers featured in the book, such as the first meeting of the tallest and shortest men – Sultan Kösen and Chandra Dangi, respectively – in 2014 (pictured below left).

5

Cool stats GWR book production stats: • 2.7 million books printed • 2,700 tonnes of paper • 16 tonnes of glue to bind books • 64 tonnes of ink • Finished books total weight is more than 3,000 tonnes • Total pile of books would reach over 51km high
