Overview . Green growth situation in Nigeria Gas flare reduction Clean Electricity projects Biomass use in the industry Lagos state initiative: Carbon footprints monitoring Lagos state initiative: Energy efficiency in Lightings
Nigeria and Kyoto Protocol ( Greening…) Green Reform is a core ingredient of Kyoto Protocol was adopted at the Third Conference of Parties (COP-3) to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change As a legal framework, it is designed to strengthen the implementation of the UNFCCC Nigeria ratified the Kyoto Protocol in 2004 Adopted along with the Protocol are the three Kyoto Mechanisms: (a) Emissions Trading (b) Joint Implementation (c) The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) 3
Gas flare reduction:
Gas flares in Nigeria as seen from space
Gas flare reduction
• Gas flaring in Nigeria is estimated at about 15.2 bcm daily • A few CDM projects on gas flare reduction are underway • Pan Ocean gas plant project is an example of: • Reducing emissions upstream by ending flaring at the oil field • Supporting sustainable development by providing gas for domestic electricity

• Power per capita in Nigeria ranks among the lowest in Africa • On-going efforts by government to improve capacity through reforms in the sector • Power sector presents a major opportunity for Nigeria in the area of green growth through using higher efficiency electrical generation (CCGT) and backing out individual diesel fired generators

CURRENT OCGT
• Emissions from off-grid diesel plants in Nigeria is more than grid emissions • 66% power plants in the Nigeria are low efficiency OCGT and the % is growing. • A few CCGT power plants are being implemented with lower per kWh GHG emissions – albeit without any direct policy support
Some Registered Green Projects in Nigeria
Green Growth Development in Lagos State
Lagos State is the smallest in Landmass but the most populous in Nigeria with 18million population. 60% off industrial activities in Nigeria happen in the State. It is the only State that has the office of “Transformation” to green reforms and growth in the Chief Executive Officer/ Governor’s office in Nigeria . This “Office” oversees green growth in Lagos State.
SPARC- State Partnership for Accountability, Responsiveness‘ and Commitment in Governance. Road Networks on Easy and Pollution free Transportation Infrastructures. Resources Usage within the State
Biomass use in the Industry in Lagos
Nigeria has abundant biomass resources but there is no biomass industry One major initiative (Okobaba Sawdust) is underway in Lagos State Key barriers are costs of transportation and ability to commercialize biomass sources.

Established in the 1940’s in the riverine community on the Lagos Mainland 50,000-100,000 residents and an area of 25 hectares in 6 political wards Considered second largest saw mill community in Africa and the largest in West Africa. Approximately 200 active family-owned sawmills It is a point of call for consumers of wood for furniture and firewood.

Lagos State initiative: Carbon footprints monitoring
Lagos is about the most populated city in Nigeria Commercial centre of the country with many industrial clusters Energy consumption and emission rate is high in Lagos compared to other cities in Nigeria. Industries encouraged on energy efficiency and renewable energy applications
Lagos state initiative: Carbon footprints monitoring • LASEPA is launching a green consumer initiative • Goal is to bring Lagos consumers to the frontline to salvage the changing climate • The is approach to have a consumer label detail the carbon footprint of a product/service and a commitment by its producer to reduce it. • Expected to encourage industries to embrace green solutions to reduce their carbon footprints • Details can be found on the website; http://lagoscarbonmanagement.org
Lagos state Initiative: Energy efficiency in Lightings
Lagos state is working with private investors to replace bulbs with energy saving lamps in some selected local government areas in the state This will be extended to other local government areas in a successive plan.
Drawbacks to Green Growth in Nigeria.
Safety Net Core Designs and its Implementation. Green Budget Reforms. Advocacy/ General consciousness Regulatory framework. Sustainable monitoring and Evaluation. Sustainable Environmental Practices and Climate Change effects. Lack of Coordinated intervention practices Oil Spillages bunkering activities. Equipment failures. Deforestation. Etc.
Let us preserve our Environment.. The ‘invoice of our prints’ makes it difficult to assess the extent of an improper management of our environment and its resources on the future generations. It is then our collective responsibilities and task in our time to hand down undiminished environment to those who come after us. Thank You for your attention.
